Georgia coach Kirby Smart's father, Sonny, died Saturday morning after suffering complications from hip surgery he underwent following a fall in New Orleans before the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

I don’t know the reason why but elderly people who have hip surgery are at risk for stroke .
Happened in my family a few years ago

Some hip surgeries can be bloody, so yes, stroke, clots, and infection are a real danger.

Anesthesia for elderly with congestive heart failure is a bad combination. Some don’t wake up.

Post-op immobility and opioids are good recipe for pneumonia, which is deadly for that age group when stuck in a hospital bed on pain meds.

From what I gathered, I think the lack of movement is really detrimental if they survive the surgery part.
