he looked terrible Saturday. He threw 2 picks but 3 or 4 more could have/should have been picked off. I think one day he will be a good QB but it won't be this year if the spring game was an accurate snap shot of where he is as a player right now. Hell Stegall looked better at the end of the game.<div>
</div><div>On the same theme Relf reallysurprisedme. I think 2010 may see the best play at QB Mississippi State has seen in a long time.</div><div>
</div><div>So Coach34 or whoever else wants to pile on go ahead. Kinda glad I was wrong on this one because if Relf cantrulybe a "Dual Threat" QB Mullen will have a serious weapon this fall.</div>

first "live" action. I think he was pressing and missing a lot of underneath stuff. He forced some terrible throws. We have a long way until August. Relf did look great though.

I may teach you something yet...

Dont get too down on Russell- he is still very young and green...we are finally doing what we are supposed to at State- taking the time to develop a QB

You have to pretty much be an NFL talent to play QB in the SEC as a Freshman...and when Saban didnt sign him, I knew he wasnt an NFL talent

He will be a quality back-up for Relf and hopefully Mullen can get another dual-threat QB in here ready to share time with Russell after Relf leaves

and that only improves with age and maturity. He's got the physical skill set, and he can run the offense in time. He just doesn't have the moxy or whatever they call it just yet.

Jason Campbell took 4 years to develop, but when he did it paid off. I suspect Russell will turn out the same way, they are alot alike.</p>

with Saban or Crooms- nobody worth a **** is going to sign with Crooms. Hell, Crooms drove a lifelong Bulldog who's father headed up the Tupelo boosters to sign with LSU.

Russell will be decent- but I'm not sure he ever starts a full season for us. Mullen is going to get a QB in here that can play once we start winning this Fall....

You mean the 2nd most successful coach in Alabama history?
Who coached them to 28% of the schools entire NCAA appearances?
Who has taken them farther in the NCAA Tourney than anybody in their history?
Who was fired with a 12-7 record and didnt have a losing season his last 9 years there?

Only you are dumb enough to call Gottfried "my waterloo"....good call dumbass

But Saban absolutely wanted him. So did Steve Spurrier and Bobby Petrino. <div>
</div><div>Whether or not he ends up being good enough to play in the NFL is something that people will figure out down the road.</div><div>
</div><div>I, like Bonedaddy, will admit that he's not ready yet. Like Dawgstudent said, he was pressing. From what I saw, he was trying to make the perfect throw every time instead of just letting it go. He also didn't really react well to the pressure he saw on Saturday, which was considerable.</div><div>
</div><div>One other thing: I had said Russell would start not so much because I thought he would be ready to be All-SEC or anything, but just because I didn't trust Chris Relf to run an offense for an entire game and to throw the football consistently. I thought expecting him to improve enough since the Egg Bowl to do so was simply too much to ask. </div><div>I was proven wrong, and I'm very ok with that. He's still not as accurate on touch routes as I would prefer, but at least the ball is going where he's trying to throw it these days. Combine that with his running ability, and he can be dangerous.</div>

his development isnt any further along. I mean how many great quaterbacks have come out of this state in the last twenty years that went on to have three or four years of productive quarterback play at the division one level? Jason Campbell and Ro Miller are the only two that come to mind. Highschools here just dont develop qbs well. Thats why I think Mullen will have to go elsewhere to get that GREAT qb. One mans opinion. </p>

Are you using these facts to support an argument that Gottfried is was a good coach? If so, please tell me why those same figures aren't indicative of Stansbury's coaching prowess.

/Before you start, know that I agree that Stans is deficient in x's and o's coaching. And I'm not saying "Stans is the best coach we've ever had or could hope to get" or anything like that.

He looked very shaky early and then looked pretty good for two or three series in the middle and then late he looked shaky again. He wasn't zipping alot of his passes and threw off his back foot alot. Also, his line wasn't as good as Relf's line was. He is a freshman. But, he is big and has a good arm and I think has a good chance to develop intoa good QB. Being a MSU fan, I am ecstatic that we have someone who resembles other SEC QBs. How many no. 1 rated QB recruits end up having lackluster careers in college? It is definitely way too early to come to a conclusion on Russell. Hell, look at how improved Relf looks from last year even. Lots of time to polish things up and progress.

Most of us knew coming in that Russell was going to need some time to develop. But... he does have more potential than any other QB we have signed in some time.

I am glad Relf has improved as much as he has and will probably start. Russell needs to be brought in to the SEC a little at a time this year in good situations until he gets some more game savvy at that level.

Lost in all of this is the fact that in Mullen's second year we are light years ahead in the QB position than we were during Croom's tenure. Omar would have been killer in this offense but you can't turn back time. I am more worried about our WR corps right now than the QB position. We need a fleet of guys in this offense.

as I have said many, many times has done a good job at State. He has made us a consistent program. Where I start differing from everyone else is here:

I think he has taken us as far as he can- Stansbury's best days are behind him

And I think that's why Gottfried is no longer at Bammer. Gottfried was starting to slide some, and they felt they needed to make a change before it went any farther. I mean damn, he got fired mid-season with a 12-7 record. 12-7. And I can't really fault Bammer, because I think they have hired the right coach in Grant. We'll see in the next couple of years if it is.

Stansbury is heading that same direction. He is starting to slide. But State is not like Bammer, and we will let a coach slide all the way back before we make a change.

I get just as frustrated as you but the day that Stansbury has 2 consecutive losing seasons in conference play and starts off 12-7 (2-3), I think everyone will agree he should be fired.

pretty sure matt barkley had that title, and he went to usc. I hope russell does great but im not going to get my hopes up like every other state fan does. sometimes you have to be realistic. he's not going to be an all sec qb. i hope i get proved wrong but its not likely. he will bring in some good plays here and there this season and be an average sec qb in the future, but he is not the savior of msu football. He was the #38 qb and our 12th bestgradedrecruitin 09 per espn

Saban has not had but one starter in the NFL, but he did have rohan davey, matt mauck, jamarcus russell, matt flynn, and john parker wilson. That is five quarterbacks in 9 years which is pretty damn good. I know only only one starts but thats all the more reason a quarterback in college would be attracted to his program. He takes mediocre, get-the-job done quarterbacks and turns them into late round draft picks. In his time since LSU, the only quarterbacks he did not develop into NFL players were Josh Booty and Marcus Randall. That's a pretty good resume for a high school quarterback to go off of.

and a nice one that was a TD that was called back.

He was playing w/the 2nd string (for the most part) and like DS said, he was pressing a bit

Its nice to have him back there but Relf is a better package right now that TR.

Relf has the capability to do quite well for us this year but I am not going to say he is THE MAN based on a spring game or even a pretty good spring in general. I still want to see how he does against an opposing SEC defense that comes in prepared for him as the starter and puts him under pressure (which he had very little of this past Saturday). I liked what I saw from Relf this spring and in the spring game but I have yet to see him do it in prime time as a starter from snap one in a REAL game. It won't be until we start our regular season schedule and I see how he does there that I will feel fully comfortable with Relf as our full time starter. Even as well as he did this past Saturday there were still a couple of occassions where Relf's pass flew over the intended receivers head by about 10 yards.

I think if Bammer wanted him, they would have signed him. Especially with the talk of Mullen wanting a dual-threat guy to run the offense when he was hired.

Just because schools recruit players and they go visit, doesnt mean they have a scholarship offer

I was with Tyler and his Dad the day Saban verbally offered him at a 7 on 7 the Wildcats played in at UAT. Tyler had done especially well that morning at a Nike mini camp that preceded the 7 on 7. To be honest, I don't know if there ever was a written offer - never asked Tyler or Craig. But Bama continued to recruit him hard until late in the process even after Mullen got a re-commitment from Tyler.

I suppose it's all really moot anyway.

My thoughts about the whole deal is that I'm glad Relf has improved a lot and I think Tyler will be a significant contributor to this year's team. My main concern with MSU and QBs is whether Mullen runs them like they ran Tebow at UF. I don't think anyone (other than Tebow - he's a freak and UF got lucky) can survive SEC defenses like that. Also, I think both Ty and Relf run too straight up (maybe it just seems that way because they are both tall) and doing that against SEC defenses will get you killed. I think even a big kid like Relf will get hurt running that much but I could be wrong. So, I hope we run the QB less than they did at UF.

Bottom line: MSU has a good problem and I'm glad we do.

She thought saban was an *** and didnt think he had any care for his players. just saw them as horses to win him the race. Not arguing the spring game, just give him time. Yes, bama wanted him and his mom absolutely said no and TR wanted to stay in state. Since is soph. year. Its nice to see guys staying in state, he can be NFL caliber and saying not so is foolish
