Holy shít. He hit 2 bombs today? That’s pretty wild.

Just for some perspective on the Rays outfield situation….38 home runs is a number to consider. That is, that’s how many home runs the 3 projected starters hit for the Rays hit in 2024. Not each individually. Combined. All of them. In over 1300 combined plate appearances.

If they have reason to believe Jake could hit even 10-15 HR’s in addition to what he’s already doing, he might damn well start for the Rays….not just make the roster.

How many did he hit during his four years at State? A handful, I think. I feel like I remember one at Florida's old ballpark.
I was there when he hit the homerun out to right at Florida. We were sitting in front of his mom and I turned around to high-five and celebrate with her, and after jumping around for a bit she looks down at me and says "He doesn't do that!". I've always thought that was pretty funny.

My memory is he hit zero HRs in his State career. May be wrong. If he did hit one it was late in his career.

Edit: I'm completely wrong. He hit 5 over 3 different seasons. Didn't remember that at all.

Double Secret Edit: it was Adam Frazier I was thinking about. Zero HRs in 3 seasons at State.

Jake hit 9 in '21, 4 in '22, 5 in '23 and 6 in '24, never playing more than 119 games. Playing a full MLB season he could be a 10-15 HR guy.

If he was a regular starter, I absolutely think he'd end up with 10+ HRs in a season. And 5+ Sportscenter (is that still a thing?) Top 10 plays in the outfield.

He is listed as the one of the 4 OFs on the active roster
That’s the 40-man roster. It will come down to 26 on opening day.

Richie Palacios and Christopher Morel are both expected opening day roster takes who will be primary outfielders, but are listed as infielders on the 40-man. Morel is expected to start, alongside Josh Lowe and Jonny DeLuca in the outfield.

Jake is more or less competing with 5 other players for one of 3 spots - Eloy Jimenez, Kameron Misner, Jonathan Aranda, Jose Caballero, and Curtis Mead. All 5 others have at least some MLB experience, although Misner only has 15 MLB at-bats, which were not good. Jimenez is also not on the 40-man, and has not had a good spring at all, but has multiple MLB years under his belt, and has power. 3 of those 6 will make it, the other 3 will not. Rays have been giving the most spring at-bats to Aranda, Mead, and Jimenez, so I think they are comparing those 3 against each other and only planning to take 1 or 2 of them. Only Mead has been good, and he’s had possibly the best spring of anyone in MLB. I think Jake is competing more with Misner than those guys. Caballero might be a cut if they feel they get adequate back-up IF experience from Palacios, Morel, and Mead.

If it were me, I’d take Mead, 1 of 3 between Aranda / Jimenez / Caballero (probably Caballero due to his defense), and 1 of 2 between Jake and Misner. Misner has had a pretty good spring as well, but again had a really tough go of it last year when he got an injury call-up.

It’s crazy to think back to talking to a friend and saying “Did you see that Griffey catch? No? It’s about 45 minutes into Sportscenter so watch it on the next replay.”
