From Facebook:

Rusty Hampton, Clarion-Ledger Sports Editor
Brandon has accepted a job with the Alabama Media Group and will be covering Auburn for the Birmingham, Mobile and Huntsville papers. His last day at the CL is set for March 15. We hate to see him leave but it's nice to see good people have success and move into bigger jobs.

We don't have the best beat writers obviously, but Marcello is probably my favorite. Wish him the best.

Greater than Sekou Smith? Oh hell no. You must be high right now.

I used to hate him, but he grew on me more and more over the last year. At first he asked some stupid *** questions like he was an investigative reporter, but he calmed down and got in a groove.

Good luck to him and to anyone who currently works for the CL, and especially to the future beat writer of MSU athletics. We blame the writer for just about everything.

Smith and Veazey are infinitely more talented than Marcello. I like Marcello, but he isn't a great writer. Veazey's work was always more interesting, and he is kicking *** at his new gig. He has a bright future in the journalism field.

Of the four current or former CL writers you mentioned, Talty is the worst. And he is worse by a wide margin.

Is it weird that Marcello has yet to say anything about it on twitter?

I figured if they are announcing on Facebook he would have said something about it

That is laughable

Smith and Veazey are so far ahead of the other two it is hilarious.

From what I can tell about Talty from reading here ...

no one could accuse him of being an MSU homer, for sure. And again, from what I can tell here, he would be more at home on a really small town paper.

We disagree about the quality of our beat writers. Say what you will about Rusty Hampton, but he as done a phenomenal job of recruiting talent for our beat writer job. Sekou Smith and Ian Rapoport are big time sports writers. Kyle Veazey is doing very well for himself as well. Like others have said, Marcello started slowly but came on strong toward the end.

This job has become a springboard for up and coming journalists. I have no doubt that Hampton will come through again. I also have no doubt that State fans will hate him for a little while, then later realize he isn't out to bring down MSU.

Yep. Ian & Veazey are by far the best beat writers we've had. Marcello was decent. Kind of hate to see him go though because odds are the next guy will be worse. And yeah, Beretta's got to be trolling.

17 him never liked the way he always put a negative spin on anything MSU. I will bet he doesn't do the same to Auburn.

You are correct on all counts. Sadly, Gannett as a company is making it harder and harder for good journalists to take jobs and thrive in them.

He's a beat writer, not a cheerleader like gene. Sometimes the news or truth hurts and it's not great all the time.

Just saw this on AL.com:

Marcello explained a somewhat surprising factor that ultimately swayed his decision. "Yesterday I was really on the fence between staying at MSU or accepting the position at Auburn. But today I couldn't help but feel pretty disrespected from the lack of Twitter support from MSU fans, after all I've done for that school."

I would rank them, best to worst ... Sekou, Ian, Veazey, Marcelllo. Talty is not a beat writer. Truth be known ... he's not even a writer.

Hate to see him go. He had grown on me.

Veazey is a great writer, but he had too much passion and energy for dirt. After Dixon's DUI, every single article they rest of the year had to have an unrelated footnote which re-printed that Dixon had a DUI during the summer before football season.

Don't forget Mike Wallace as well who now covers the Heat for ESPN.com. He was at the Miami paper.

Good point. We had Wallace for a short time, but he was very talented as well.

If my memory servers, Sekou actually posted on NAFOOM/SPS a few times

I exchanged a few emails with him, nice guy. It's good to see him on national TV now.
