Marcello wrote a great article on Malzahn, Nutt, and Mustain...

No kidding. Nice to have someone that truly appreciates his role cover State

not saying that as a homer, but it's a premium position in the sports journalism world (SEC school). I think he knows that and doesn't bring some agenda to the table other than doing the very best job he can covering Mississippi State. I've enjoyed his work.

I keep hearing about the upgrade to Bonner & while I'll admit that he's good I just wonder if people will say the same after (as well as if and when) he writes articles concerning MSU that aren't happy 'feel good' stories.

I welcome those stories. The problem with Marcello was he jumped into the job at MSU trying to make "breaking stories" and it pissed everyone off. Bonner seems to be able to pick his battles, he's thrown in subtle jabs, but they're appropriate.

I had a good conversation with him a few weeks ago and he asked me "why do fans consider MSU to be one of the greatest programs even though it doesn't have a title?" which is a fair question. I didn't take offense to it... he genuinely wanted to know. Somehow we got on the topic of Polk and after I ranted about how much of a prick he is Mike told me everyone from the press box the entire postseason told him to write an article on the Polk vs MSU relationship, but he didn't think it was appropriate. That's the type of story Marcello would have written, a debby downer piece about how much everyone hates our best coach of any sport in the wake of the national championship game. Bonner used good judgement. Marcello is all about breaking stories and such, which has its place... probably covering a school like Auburn that has like 10 reporters.

I liked the article, and Marcello shines at stories like that. I've always wanted to know how Mustain and company felt about the Arkansas and USC thing after the fact and Marcello is probably one of the only SEC beatwriters with the balls to call him and Nutt up separately and record their conversations about each other in a newspaper.

Mine is not nearly as detailed as that. I simply think he's a better writer. Good news or bad, I want to read a well-written piece. Bonner has more skill in this ability than Marcello in my opinion. Veazey - the hated Rebel - is an extraordinarily talented writer. The transition from him to Marcello was unusually rough because of the difference in ability.

Having lived in Arkansas from '84-'90, you never saw anything negative about the Hogs in any paper, unless it was the Jonesboro paper (Ark. State). This is the difference between having an in state rival and not having one. When you are the "program", you get all the press and no negativity, unless someone on the national level breaks the news. I love the MSU/OM fight talk, and hate OM, but the State of MS would be so much better off with one major university, it would be staggering.

No doubt about it. Veazey is an incredible writer who covered a school that had fans who didn't like him personally. His pieces were fantastic though. The CL went into the dumps and decided to save some money and hire a kid for nothing and we suffered for it for a while reading crap articles by a guy who had no business having the job he had. I think the CL learned from their mistake and hired a guy with a LOT more experience this time around.

I'm in no way defending Marcello. I didn't think he fit in here or did that great of a job, I just simply want to point out that his style of journalism is entirely different than Bonner's and he's best suited having a job where he doesn't have to be objective. ON TOP OF THAT Bonner is a better writer.
