Miami, you got yourself one hell of a coach and recruiter. 9 10-win seasons in the SEC. Top 10 recruiting classes year in and year out. Look out college football.

EXACTLY! He is one of the most devout Christian's you'll ever meet, pure class all the way. I seriously doubt he's going to relate well to the thug mentality that made Miami what it was. I guess it's possible they could turn over a new leaf, but I have my doubts.

Umm...why would college football have to "look out"? Ton of top ten and multiple top 5 recruiting classes and he managed 5 loss and 7 loss seasons. Got blown out many times and couldn't get it done despite being in a very weak division.
It'd be completely different if actually achieved something while at Georgia but, he didn't, which is why he was fired. Miami didn't steal him, he was fired.

It will be fun to watch this unfold if nothing else.

Richt is a good coach, but this isn't the type of hire that puts the fear of "oh no, they will be dominant again."

As others have mentioned, he's an excellent recruiter and seems to have a good control of his players, but he's had a lot of talent in the past and hasn't really done all that much with it. To be honest, if we could start all over again and we had the choice between Richt and Riley, I'd take Riley. Not that he's a proven winner either, but I guess I go with the unknown of what his football mind can do with proper facilities and financial backing to support recruiting over the known of Richt landing great recruits and always coming up short.

In other words, he's a Mike Riley that can recruit?

He was 3 yards away from beating Alabama in the SEC championship game and playing for a national title. Routed us 45-31 following that loss. Also, the ACC isn't the SEC. It's also his alma mater.

bingo. that's why I said lookout college football. Sorry, should've clarified. Posted as soon as I heard. Could be really great to watch him turn it around there, or perhaps the opposite. We'll see if he can get Miami back to the top.

Not exactly a splash hire. Richt is a good coach and alum so he should understand the culture there and recruit well. I would have liked to see Butch Davis return, he put together that 2001 roster and we all know how that worked out.

why aren't there ANY rumors of Pelini getting a sniff at power 5 school???? Oh that's because the entire college football universe knows what majority of husker fans don't know-- he is just not a good coach (see his record this year at D-1AA for crying out loud) and is a toxic time bomb waiting to happen. Good day sir

Routed us??? How is a game that was tied in the 4th quarter a "route"?
That was a Bo team that did actually get routed by Wisconsin and gave up 70 points in the ccg, going up against a typical overrated Georgia team and for all intensive purposes, they weren't that far apart, despite the talent gap. Which shows how poor of job Richt was doing there. He then lost the following year to Nebraska.

Giving up 45 points is not really a good thing... but you're right it wasn't a complete route. (It just felt like we got blown out a lot that year: 63 to OSU, 70 to WISC) Georgia's speed and athleticism took over in the late 3rd and 4th quarter. And like I said, it's his alma mater. A lot of old U players are welcoming him home on twitter already. Who knows if it will pan out with Richt at Miami, but he's a solid coach and I really believe UM made a great hire in Richt. If he did such a poor job at UGA, why did he get a Power-5 job offer 77 hours after Georgia fired him?

Yes; it seems whichever coach gets things under control ( culture ); can have even great success. To a casual observer, it also seems hard to keep together. He does seem to be a fine person; IMO he is a great pick for what they need - but at least 50 other programs have a great deal of whatever is needed to compete for the brass ring. Does anyone have thoughts on more parity?

Richt is a good coach, but this isn't the type of hire that puts the fear of "oh no, they will be dominant again."

I'm curious how many folks actually fit the "oh no they will be dominant" mode. My contention is there are really only 2, and possibly a third. The two are Saban and Meyer, known killer attitudes and the track records to match. The third might be Chip Kelly, but Kelly still has zero titles to his name and has yet to really field a team with a defense.

All the typical suspects, have fairly serious flaws to the "instant domination" narrative. Briles has never really had a defense. Patterson is also a pretty level headed nice guy, but great coach. I think Patterson's game is more portable than Kelly's, so maybe Gary should be my third possibility. Stoops, well, he's lost more big games than he's won and he'd be another Richt like retread at another school if a guy doesn't like Richt. Dantonio is also a good coach, but also no titles next to his name and no one is really sure he can recreate MSU long term without Narduzzi, or at another school altogether like South Carolina. There a whole host of guys who have coached in the South, who are remarkable in that they are stellar recruiters, but their teams don't usually play that well, or very consistently if they manage to put together a good season (guys like Orgeron, Davis, Jones). And that's not mentioning Miles, who can't beat Saban at LSU, be hard to see him doing it from elsewhere. Peterson is probably a dark horse, he was pretty darn dominant at Boise St, but he'll probably have to prove he can be dominant in the Power 5 before anyone really bestows a "fear of God" label on him.

I agree with everything in this post, but I'm going to play the grammar Nazi anyway..."for all intents and purposes."
Sorry. Can't help my self.

I believe that Richt will win there. He's been talking a lot about going back to play calling, and working directly with QBs again. IMO that was when he was at is best. As far as the "U" attitude... I think he may still have a little in there somewhere ;-) He is the coach that rushed his entire team on the field to taunt Florida after UGA's first TD. Brad Kaaya should be excited.

Miami has a TON of talent and a very talented returning starter at QB. He should be able to right the ship quickly.

I'm sure he'll go pack to pro style as well. Miami ran a spread under Golden, right? I really think he'll have the U in the playoff talk before Kaaya graduates.

If he brings his coaching staff over from UGA, and duplicates his schemes from UGA, there's no reason to expect anything different than UGA type results.

National Championships I agree - ACC....easier than SEC and what Richt does should have better conference results. And he has a pretty good base to recruit from.

I wonder who he'll keep. I've had a front row seat to all the UGA drama this year. I can't imagine he'll keep his OC. DC is pretty good. Sometimes you just need a fresh start. I think he's a great coach. I hope he does well there. It's funny, I hate Miami so much, but have always liked Richt. I'm so conflicted now!

How many other programs wanted to hire Riley in the last couple years? He was one more bad season away from being ran out of Corvallis.
