and LSU always being tough, he will have a difficult job of winning the east and then another difficult job of winning the SEC. He has achieved a lot there; i just think he has peaked.

He may have peaked, but his peak is the top of the SEC. I don't know what more you could ask. He's had 10 wins in 6 of his 8 seasons. The only times he didn't reach 10 wins were an 8-4 season in his first year on the job, and a 9-4 season in 2006 when he had a true freshman starting at QB. That 2006 season, to me, was one of his best coaching jobs, along with this past season, when he led his team to a 10-3 record despite having 19 players go down to season ending injuries.

I really don't get the negative talk about Richt. It's been pure chance that he hasn't won a national title. He recruits well every year. His teams are consistently in contention for the SEC title. You can't ask for much more. People forget that prior to Richt's arrival, UGA's last SEC title had been in 1982 when Herschel Walker was still playing, and they had never won an Eastern Division title in the 9 seasons since the league expanded to 12 teams. Since his arrival, they've won or shared the East title 4 times (3 times going to the championship game), and they've won the SEC twice. They've never finished worse than 3rd in the SEC East in his 8 years as head coach, and they've finished 2nd or better 6 of his 8 seasons. His teams have gone 6-2 or better in the SEC in 6 of his 8 seasons. Plus, for the UGA fans, he's now 7-1 against Georgia Tech.

As long as UGA keeps Richt around, they will be consistently in contention in the SEC East, and he will win quite a few more SEC titles if they keep him around, and he may even win a national title if everything falls into place. No SEC school should ever complain about the type of results Richt has had in 8 seasons at UGA.

Like i said, he's done a great job. He has just peaked meaning he will not be bringing that elusive nat'l title to athens.

b/c of the nat'l title thing. What they don't realize is that getting to the nat'l title game is just luck for so many teams.

Georgia loses 2 games in conference and LSU loses 2 games in conference in 07 yet LSU gets to play in the title game. Georgia got punished for losing to better teams and playing in a better division, thereby costing them the tiebreaker.

In 02, he only lost 1 game all year, yet gets no shot at the national title. Urban Meyer loses 1 game twice and gets in the title game both years.

just like it is for Bianco. LSU and UF have both won two titles since Richt has been at UGA. He was also fortunate to get to coach against Orgeron, Zook, and Croom and even gets O back in the form of once proud UT. I just don't think he is the competitive bastard that Saban and Myer are and won't get lucky like Miles. Still a great coach though.

Richt is a hell of a coach. I think he'll eventually win a national championship at UGA, if their crazy fans stay off his back and let him stay long enough. They've been close several time, and their D let them down last year. Just too many new guys on that side of the ball, plus the DC sucks. I think most UGA fans would have killed to fire Martinez & hire Chavis this offseason.

Yep, in 2007, they were playing as good as anyone in the country by the end of the year. They had 2 losses, and they'd have played LSU in the SEC title game if UT hadn't pulled off a 15 point 4th quarter comeback against Vandy (a 1 point win only after Vandy's kicker had a FG hit the upright with under a minute to play) OR had UT lost the 4 OT game at Kentucky to end the season.

Either of those breaks go UGA's way and they end up playing LSU in the SEC title game with the winner going to the national title game. Honestly I think UGA would've beaten LSU and then Ohio State.

And yes, in 2002 they lost one game by 7 points. That same season, Ohio State won 6 regular season games by a TD or less. One break goes against OSU in any of those 6 games and UGA is playing Miami in the national title game.

The only thing you can control is your conference title. National titles are pure chance, especially in football. You can make the argument against a coach in baseball and basketball, because you control your own destiny. In football, you don't completely.

Fact is, Richt has taken UGA to a higher level as a program. They are consistently competing at the top of the SEC, and they haven't had an 8 year run like this current run in a long time. That's why I don't get the negativity toward him. As to your argument about Croom, Orgeron, Zook. Well, now he gets to compete with Chizik, Kiffin, and likely Joker Phillips (teams he actually plays every year). There are always going to be weak coaches in the league.

what do you mean the bad luck argument gets old? He has had 2 seasons where he had as much right to be in the championship game as Les Miles, Nick Saban and Urban Meyer. That's just bad luck. How is it not bad luck? Why is his 1 loss SEC any worse than Nick Saban's or Urban Meyer's? Why is his 2 loss season any less impressive than Les Miles' 2 loss season (losses to KY and Ark) in 07? Its not, it was just bad luck. The guy is obviously a damn good coach. He's just fallen victim to a very questionable system.

And Miles and Saban played in the west...you don't think there were plenty of ****** teams that they got to play against?
