Yep, in 2007, they were playing as good as anyone in the country by the end of the year. They had 2 losses, and they'd have played LSU in the SEC title game if UT hadn't pulled off a 15 point 4th quarter comeback against Vandy (a 1 point win only after Vandy's kicker had a FG hit the upright with under a minute to play) OR had UT lost the 4 OT game at Kentucky to end the season.
Either of those breaks go UGA's way and they end up playing LSU in the SEC title game with the winner going to the national title game. Honestly I think UGA would've beaten LSU and then Ohio State.
And yes, in 2002 they lost one game by 7 points. That same season, Ohio State won 6 regular season games by a TD or less. One break goes against OSU in any of those 6 games and UGA is playing Miami in the national title game.
The only thing you can control is your conference title. National titles are pure chance, especially in football. You can make the argument against a coach in baseball and basketball, because you control your own destiny. In football, you don't completely.
Fact is, Richt has taken UGA to a higher level as a program. They are consistently competing at the top of the SEC, and they haven't had an 8 year run like this current run in a long time. That's why I don't get the negativity toward him. As to your argument about Croom, Orgeron, Zook. Well, now he gets to compete with Chizik, Kiffin, and likely Joker Phillips (teams he actually plays every year). There are always going to be weak coaches in the league.
