Masoli's impact

Assuming he makes it on the UM roster, what is everybody's opinion of what his impact will be? Of course I'm hoping that it turns out to be a non factor, but I must admit that he's the kind of talent that could make a huge difference. It's a very unwelcome wild card.

I think the discussion of the technicallities of him getting to OM is interesting, but I think he's going to be their quarterback, damnit to hell.

I think most OM fans hope he can be eased into the offense enough in the first 5 games that he could be ready to take over after that while continuing to get Stanley some snaps for development purposes. Most importantly though is depth. Without him, we are an injury away from potential doom. It also gives us options if Stanley doesn't perform well.

Hopefully Stanley will understand the situation and have more time to develop slowly as opposed to being thrown to the fire. Then he'll have the team for two years with more confidence, more developed WRs, and a better line to play behind.

Hopefully Masoli can give us enough of a spark to make a 1-2 game or better difference. Hopefully he can take us from a team that may make a small bowl or not make a bowl at all to a team with bowl options.

If he stays clean for the short period and plays well, it will bring some good publicity. We all know ESPN will be showing highlights if he does much of anything. It will be a storyline they will follow.

Mississippi just went from a 5-7 team sitting at home in December to a 7-5 team playing in the Music City Bowl.

They should win at least 4 of the first 5 games without Masoli. Then you still have Louisiana Lafayette on the schedule in November. And frankly, the home team is going to win the Egg Bowl 9 out of 10 times. I normally agree with your posts whether they're about State or Ole Miss, but I just can't see where you getting 5-7 considering how soft our schedule is this year. You're basically saying you see Ole Miss going 1-7 in conference play (sans Masoli).

The Egg Bowl, UK, and UT on the road will more than likely determine your fate. Assuming no upsets one way or the other. Your SEC road schedule is not enviable- at Baton Rouge, at Tuscaloosa, and Fayetteville, and then Auburn is at home. Also, Knoxville may be tougher than you think.

I agree about home field and the Egg Bowl, but you never know what's going to happen in a rivalry game.

I honestly think State has the better team on paper, but that really won't mean a whole lot come the last week in November.

The “Masoli Effect”

Much has been made of The University of Mississippi’s potential addition of former Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli. Talk radio in Mississippi is abuzz and internet message boards are on the verge of crashing. However, when one takes an analytical approach in assessing what the end result may be, there is only one logical conclusion… it’s much ado about nothing. There will be no discernable rise, much less a meteoric one for Houston Nutt’s program.

I offer the following evidence in why both before, and after, the new Rebel/Muppet/Landshark shows up in Oxford, Ole Miss’s position within the SEC West has already been cast in the same type bronze being utilized in Tuscaloosa. They finish no better than 5th in the division in 2010 and it’s all about the scheduling.

Ole Miss beats Vandy and Kentucky at home with or without Masoli. They are losers at Alabama, at Arkansas, versus Auburn, at Tennesse and at LSU. This leaves UM with a 2-5 conference record with only the Egg Bowl remaining, but let me come back to that…
Now, let’s look at MSU’s 2010 schedule: Auburn, at LSU, Georgia, at Florida, Kentucky, at Bama, Arkansas, and at Ole Miss. Kentucky is the only potential win, save a possible Egg Bowl upset of their in state rival. This leaves MSU with a 1-7 or possibly a 2-6 mark in conference play for the year.
So, while it is certainly interesting fodder for football fans in the state, Masoli under center is, at best, a zero sum gain.

Just so I'm straight on this, you're saying the only the game we have a chance of winning is Kentucky, right?

I think he makes at most a one win difference. If it was a spread system, I could see it being more. I see them going from 5-7 to 6-6 or 7-5 at best. The O line problems could be awful. If it's anything similar to how they played against South Carolina last year, Ole Miss will be 5-7.

That's one reason that I think that Masoli could be a big factor. That easy first five gives them time and experience to work his skills into their offense. Then they hit the challenging part of their schedule with all of that experience and development plus Masoli. I'm personally afraid that they could win 8 games or even better. Not trying to make it more than it is, but i think the schedule is vey favorable. Plus with the O line beiing their really weak link, that especially can jel over that five game stretch. Plus Mazoli's speed can make the o line problems easier to deal with. So I don't see how anybody can say his presence is not significant. I hope it won't be, but we'll see.

Let's just hope he don't come in with the I'm better then you red neck attitude and kill the teams chemistry or get into trouble and add to the other bad pressOle Misshas gotten in the past five years such as radios and pillow being stolen or KKK marching ontheir campus. I still think Ole Miss is 6 to 8 win team with or with out him. The schedule plays out well.</p>

Will Win: Jacksonville State, Louisiana-Lafayette

Should Win: at Tulane, Vanderbilt

Toss-Up: Kentucky, Fresno State, at Tennessee, Mississippi State

Should Lose: at LSU, at Arkansas, Auburn

Will Lose: at Alabama

Your opinion isn't far-fetched. The only SEC game I'm confident about is Vanderbilt.

That said, I'm also not distraught about our chances against anyone except Alabama. We have the Les Miles X-factor going for us in Baton Rouge, and Nutt will have his team ready to play Arkansas.

Depending on how Nix's defense looks against Auburn, I could move the Egg Bowl to "should win" due to the home-field advantage SSMUND pointed out.

been caught in posession of ganja, he would still be on Oregon's team serving his one year suspension. He was still on their team but suspended for the year, only allowed to practice with the team. Fast forward 2 months and he's walking on at %%!$ because, and only because, he got convited a second time while on probation for the first incident. He's not going to make much of an impact, but they may make a bowl now. (O Line has more holes than swiss cheese soTom Brady and Drew Breescould crunble on that team)

Someone please justify that for me. I'm having a hard time seeing how any normal thinking human being doesn't see how messed up this entire situation is. I would be embarrassed to have gone to school there but thank God I didn't.

OM needs a good QB. Masoli is one. Problem solved.

Yeah, Masoli is an extreme example of **** asses playing college sports, but let's not act like all of our players are saints. Our starting QB isn't exactly a stranger to pot, either. Didn't one of our recruits a few years back sign his LOI in his jail cell?

Thugs play college football. It happens.

but it is likely the only game MSU will be favored to win and UM will be close to a pickem. With some turnovers and/or big plays, upsetting AU or ARK isn't beyond the realm of feasibility.
