Fine with it as long as he's not the starter
I would like to pose a serious question with no disrespect intended. Here is the scenario:
IF we're were lucky enough to land a 5 star stud of a point guard (granted, not likely), but when practices start, the 4 star kid starts smokin' the buger boy, and outlplays him cause he is hungrier. As a coach, who would you start and give more minutes to?
My only point being, We get who we get. We can't control it. And this coach will get a third season.
All we can do at this point is see how he does with the players he gets.
I for one, would play whomever turns out to be the better player and ignore the number of stars if it gets better results.

Great pickup. Solid size, super efficient, NBA pedigree, and another ball handler that we desperately need

No. No. We should have all of Rippey (PG) Crowe (CG) Maximo (SF) and Stokes (PF) all signed. Why ? Cause we’re UK. Then we should have no problem getting Steinbach and a starting caliber backup PG who’s prolly better. Definitely Tougher than Lowe (soft ah) Rippey. Transfer. Crowe (PG’s) Crowe. Chandler. JJ (SG) Maximo. Kam. Hawthorne. Noah (SF) Stokes / Psysical aggressive. strong af true PG with attitude issues / Stretch 4 young transfer. (PF) Steinbach. Moreno. Potter. (C) THATS A UK LINEUP TEAM. WITH PITINO COACHING. I MEAN. WHO’D BEAT RIPPEY (prolly 15 and 6) Crowe (14 and 4) Maximo 10,6,3. 42%:3) Stokes (18. 8. 4.) Steinbach (13. 9. ;0% 3)

Just wanna say. Yes we should be mad that some bum (prolly) 4 star just committed. This is UK and anything other than a Wall. Boogie. AD. KAT. Fox. Monk. Murray. Etc isn’t acceptable. And if they’re a 4 star. They better get a Reed or SGA. I mean he’s gonna leave when big goofy gets fired after next year prolly and who cares. A great coach can make the best roster in basketball the min he’s hired. Remember Cak. From a laughing stock to a bunch of NBA ALL STARS and a couple good college players.

Michael Jordan did not make his high school varsity as a freshman and Mason Williams did.

Mason Williams is potentially better than Michael Jordan.
"No, Michael Jordan did not make the varsity team as a sophomore (often confused with a freshman), which fueled his legendary work ethic. At 5'10", he was deemed too short and was placed on the junior varsity team. He used this rejection as motivation, dominating on JV before making varsity his junior year"

For the record, the varsity spot went to 6'7" Leroy Smith.

The analogy really wasn't good enough to be honest and it wasn't accurate either. I know facts are optional on this board but they really shouldn't be

MJ was not good enough by his own admission to play varsity. He said that he had issues adjusting to growing which is common. His coach stuck with him and helped him develop. If you want an analogy to Mason Williams I would say that like Thiero and MJ he can grow and develop. How good he is and how good he can be I don't know because I've never seen him play.

The point I'm making is we shouldn't be signing a 100 ranked freshman and expecting him to start at Kentucky. If he were to win the job over a more experienced player, so be it.

Point taken. I don't profess to know any exact ranking numbers of these players. The star ratings are most talked about.
I do know that Tyler Ulis, Immanual Quickley, Devin Booker, SGA, and Tyler Herro all came in as 4 star recruits.

He backed away from his commitment at "Jackson State". He went from Jackson State allllllllllll the way to UK without ONE other P5 school even sniffing. Guess we stole this one away before Duke got wise. This is the very recipe for Indianahoodism
I get the comment I do, I have never seen him play so I don’t know. I hope he turns out to be more Draymond Green or some lesser known kid who turns out to be a baller but ya never know. I will say generally we shouldn’t be recruiting in this range, but he has a great bloodline and should have received decent coaching and upbringing.

Considering everything we think we know, it is reasonable to think that MW is a player who will come to UK and develop over the course of 4 years. Maybe he doesn't start in year 1. Who really cares as long as we get another PG who is ready to start from day 1?

I was at Steph curry’s first game at Michigan because I believed the dude was gonna be generational. He wasn’t even a 3 star. I’m not sure Williams will be that but I like 3 stars that come from basketball pedigree. I don’t like this as the first and only signee of the year. It’s not that he’s underwhelming as a player. It’s that pope has been so underwhelming it’s rubbing off on his players.

Keaton Wagler is a freshman at Illinois and their leading scorer.

He was ranked #179 according to On3 coming out of high school last year. He is now a projected lottery pick in the NBA draft.

This is the first proper comparison I've seen, and thanks for that. 247 composite had him (Wagler) in the 125s (consensus 4 star). Very similar profile to Mase. Wagler has a higher potential frame to fill out (long 6'6 vs 6'2). But that part doesn't matter much for immediate college production.

If Mase (I don't even know if he goes by that, but it's a cool name to me) produces even half of what Wagler did as a true freshman, it's a win for UK. But the odds are very long against that.

The other comparisons to Booker, Ulis (who was a 5 star IIRC), Herro, SGA, etc are disingenuous. The high 4 star (and McDAA in several cases) in the 30s is completely different from a top 100-150 player. Wagler is certainly a fair comparison though.
