For once, I agree with you. Our country's approach to mental health is despicable.
100% correct. We do a ****** job of identifying people with issues and getting them the help they need before they harm themselves and/or others. I used to work with a guy was was Exhibit A. He retired about 3 years before me. Hugh was the epitome of "good ole country boy". He loved to hunt & fish and talked a lot like Junior Samples on Hee-Haw. Just a super nice guy to be around. He came to the retiree picnic a couple of years later, and was completely off the rails. The former slow talking, laid back guy was yammering endlessly about the Bible and end times, talking 90 MPH in a voice that had no resemblance to the guy we worked with for so many years. We were all like WTF? Some people laughed about it, some were concerned, but none of us tried to reach out to him.
Maybe 3 weeks after that, he's on the front page of the local paper for being arrested for aggravated stalking. It turns out he was arrested earlier in the year for stalking and ordered to undergo counseling. Fast forward a month or so later, Hugh gets into an argument with his neighbor. His neighbor calls the cops. The cops come and are walking up the walkway to his door when Hugh steps out and fires three or 4 rounds from his 12 gauge and retreats back inside and barricades himself in. Both cops are hit, one seriously.
An hour or so later in the standoff, Hugh sits down in the kitchen floor and kills himself with one of his handguns. One cop was treated and released, but the other one was in the hospital for over a month and had multiple surgeries, nearly losing a leg.
I think about Hugh sometimes and wonder if some of us had reached out to him that maybe we could have gotten him to seek help. At the very least, maybe a red flag law would have taken his guns away and prevented him from legally buying any more. Hugh might have eventually killed himself another way, but those cops wouldn't have gotten shot.
The dude who shot up the Waffle House in Nashville and killed 4 people was another guy who had more red flags than a Russian military parade. He had his guns taken away and given back to him later in spite of more red flags.
We need to get these people help, and in the meantime make sure they don't have access to guns.
