Sucks for Iowa State - who are they going to hire now? Maybe they will get the coach from Toledo who took over for Campbell there.

Man, I hate to be that guy but this didn't feel right so I had to look it up. Ferentz is 14-12 all time against the Clones. Campbell is 3-6 vs Iowa. The Hawkeyes are just never quite as bad as we want them to be.
I believe Iowa State has won the last 2.
and if you didn’t know, Iowa once lost 20 straight to Purdue.

They really got lucky to get Campbell, it will be interesting to see who they can snag.

If I was them, I would try to hire away the NW coach.

this will likely be Rhule's last head coaching job of note.
With Franklin departing and apparently taking kids with him as well as signing some of the PSU recruits, leaving the Nittany Lions with a signing class of 2 kids, its the PERFECT rebuild job for Matt.

Gives him 2 years of player development with a long runway, then the magical 3rd year success.
(We'll pretend like that 3rd year magic that was blown to he*l in Nebraska never happened).

Story has been written for a Matt Rhule rescue.

This was certainly a botched search that Steve P. would be proud to put his name on, but they really got bailed out with Campbell.

He'll push Rhule's stool in from now until buyout day.

I'm not sure of that... have you seen how Matt looks lately? Every clip I've seen of him the last couple of weeks he looks very beaten down.

Rhule would have it so much easier at PSU. His wife runs a hair dresser business (is this correct?). That's easy to move to another place. That would not hold me back from making the move, but until PSU hires a coach, I still think Rhule is a possibility. All it would take is one of many big PSU boosters to write that buyout check.
I’m shocked do you think Rhule is a possibility, unless you think he’ll end up just being the only one he can hire after many other coaches say “no”.

Besides being a last resort, why do you think Rhule would be appealing to Penn State?

The more they push unpalatable choices in front of the PSU fans, the more they think Rhule might be that rebuild guy they actually need.

Maybe… But the Matt Rhule rebuild narrative took a big hit in year 3 at Nebraska and I have an investment for you to buy if you think he’s gonna see improvement in year 4 with the schedule they are staring at.

Unlike Nebraska, since forever, they have an outstanding A.D. and a much better story to tell than they did before Matt arrived, so odds are they will be just fine.

this was just before i heard of the Campbell to PSU deal that was just posted here..

the main reason is Rhule is a PSU Aum, huge PSU Fan, and he is best friends with their AD, add to that the immense pressure he is under here, and it's only going to get worse.

By the end of next season, I’d be willing to bet big money that the “Matt the rebuilder“ narrative will have died.

Northwestern is a better job than Iowa State, and Braun is reportedly making almost $8 million/year there.

Iowa State has historically been the worst major-conference program in college football. Northwestern at least has proximity to Chicago going for it, and their new facilities look pretty sweet. There is nothing appealing about the Iowa State job. Campbell was barely over .500 there and yet is the most successful coach they've ever had.

The problem is...NW will never have a chance in the Big Ten, they are like iowa and Minny and Rutgers.

I guess both jobs are "safe" he can go 500 at either place and never get fired. And I would rather live in Evanston instead of Ames. So you might be right.

I have... my career is in Sales and as such I watch body language very closely... he's not doing well and I think the pressure as you say is getting to him... I hate to make the comparison but this feels so similar to Frost when Covid entered the picture and his Give A Duck went away...

The way NU got blown out the last 2 games, and the possibility of facing Utah in the Vegas Bowl would be a nasty way to end the season. Take the new DC and give him the inability to stop the run from a Utah team that is arguably the best rushing team in the country averaging over 40ppg. Our best chance is 1 or 2 of their All American type linemen declare or sit out.

Then you look at the offensive potential for NU if things would fall a certain way. No Dylan for sure, TJ hampered by a lingering hamstring, EJ announces for the draft, Rocco is already out due to having hand surgery, what if Pritchett decides to declare? Man, you talk about a totally impotent offense in a game where a lot of points are gonna be scored.

You never know, people said the same things about the Vandy job in the SEC, and look what they did this year. Like Vandy, Northwestern has some very wealthy donors and could probably buy a pretty good roster with NIL money if they wanted to.

Iowa State's athletic department is facing a $150 million budget deficit over the next few years, and their donors seem more interested in funding the basketball NIL rather than football.

They’ll probably go get a guy from the MAC or Big Sky conferences. There are several damned good coaches there. A P4 coordinator will maybe be in play. There’s a ton of guys I believe who can match what Campbell did there.

IF Rhule hadn’t gotten destroyed by Minnesota and AGAIN by PSU, I think he would be their new coach despite what Julie said.

He has to be looking at next year’s schedule and is muttering to himself “fuuuuuuu####”.
This year was his year to get 10 wins, maybe 11. That would have been "in the bank" for next year, if they did not have a great year.

But he blew it by not getting any DT's.

I think Rhule should take a look at Jon Heacock and see if he can bring him in, in the event Campbell goes. He’s ran the 3-3-5 for years which would keep Rhule happy.

Look at the teams in the B1G now. They can stay atop KU, CU, WV, UCF and probably OSU. KSU is a pickem.
Campbell leaving to me is a sure sign that $h!t is hitting the fan at ISU. That guys been in play for how many jobs in the last decade? He’s getting out now before ISU falls off a cliff.
