Stud players. But why no bigs want to join them? Is that the question, or answer?

I also thought Maxey recruited for us?

I’m actually not sure who our options are now.

I’m assuming EJ and Nick will be back, but that still leaves us really thin in the front court.

Just a guess but I think players see Richards and EJ wearing UK blue next year or don't want to take the chance that they might be.

Hard to tell.

Could be they expect Richards and Montgomery to return and don't want to compete with established players.

Could be they want to be the show and know Maxey and Whitney will do a lot of scoring while they do the dirty work. Some kids don't want to be Anthony Davis/Willie Cauley-Stein and rebound, block shots, and take the least amount of shots on the team or whatever.

Could be Cal's staff doesn't know how to recruit a big man now that Antigua is gone.

Could be the idea that you don't have to play for UK to be the number one pick. You can go play for a coach that is happy when you score 20 points and doesn't bench you for missing a block out assignment or letting someone grab a board or because you don't get on the floor.

It's pretty simple.

We had James Wiseman in the bag for two years. He's the top big in the country. The other schools went after the other bigs.

Penny went to Memphis. We tried to get in with Carey, Stewart, etc. Can't make up that much ground with players that good against schools that strong.

I am fine with Montgomery and Richards back.

As for inside depth, we can play a Point, three Wings, and a Post most of the time.

G Hagans or Quickley or Green
G Maxey
G Herro
F Whitney
F Montgomery/Richards

Play those six most of the minutes.

Baker and Allen for backcourt depth.

Add a couple of 4-star forwards for frontcourt depth.

If Cal lands McDaniels or Brooks, then even better.

G Hagans or Quickley or Green
G Maxey/Herro
F Whitney
F McDaniels or Brooks
F Montgomery/Richards

That's a great 7-man rotation.

Still, getting Montgomery and Richards back would be enough to get the job done, IMHO.

I could buy that.

But weren't we recruiting Carey to possibly play with Wiseman?

Remember that UK has a pro day where they get honest feedback on their chances of getting drafted. I have a feeling that the feedback for Richards and Montgomery was that they needed more time. I sure don’t see their names in any of the 2019 mock drafts that I’ve looked up.

Richards may come back but once EJ does the combines he could be gone.

Potential is what could send both of them packing.

That is the problem with recruiting kids to get them to the NBA, they leave whether they are ready or not.

We didn't see Gabriel, Briscoe or Humphries either but they still left. Guys are seen as failures if they come back here. It's the culture that Cal's created and now he can't get the best players to make this model work.

EJ and Nick are most likely not coming back.
That's exactly it hasn't anybody watched this episode for the last 10 years Richards isn't coming back for a 3rd year we were lucky we got Willy to do it but that's only because he got hurt at the end of his sophomore season. EJ has a productive year he isn't coming back for a 2nd year he came here to be a one and done player. We will be screwed in the front court come next year!

Not if Cal would change it 4 out and 1 in like the kids want to play! Two bigs clogging up the lane just isn’t working anymore!

Screw it Play with 4 guards.
I was thinking about that the other day. Noway in hell we don't start at least 3 guards. I figure Hagans will be back, Green will have too unless he transfers, Herro maybe-I hope and Quick is probably the only one that will have a real good chance to go. Mostly because Cal is giving him the mins and if he can develop like others in the past he should be good. Baker will be here, if he ever plays who knows and Maxey coming. I still think Cal pulls it out and we see 3 more guys with at least 1 big.

How about we stop assuming Richards or EJ are coming back when we are less than a month into the season. Nothing in Cals tenure should ever make us assume anyone is coming back (i.e. Humphries, Briscoe, Orton, Vanderbilt, Wenyen etc.). Could easily see Richards going pro overseas and the NBA could like EJs potential by the end of the season
