Just reading about the draft grades fro Maliek and Valentine.
And am curious what kind of guaranteed money these fellas are in for with a early 3rd round grade, and a 6th round grade.

Don't see the sense here?

GUARANTEED CONTRACTS ARE only given to the top 4 rounds, very few/some in round 5. Round 5 and down, the only GUARANTEED money is the signing bonus. So Collins will likely get a portion of his contact guaranteed if he is drafted in the Top 4 rounds.

Average signing bonus:(I may be off by a few percentage points but... you get the scope)
1st - Between $3MM and $10MM depending where in the draft order. Average, lets say, is $5MM
2nd - $1MM to $2.2MM
3rd - $700K
4th - $550K
5th - $175K
6th - $50k
7th - $40K

All rookies get paid the minimum of $390,000 IF YOU MAKE THE TEAM. Thats $22, 941 per week for 17 weeks. More details at this link:

what hurts both of these guys is the tremendous DT depth this year -- some have said maybe the deepest ever at this position
even if they didn't improve a bit their senior years they may have been drafted an entire round earlier just based on DT depth in the 2017 draft vs 2016 draft. Of course there is the potential of injury to weigh as well.

I ripped that from the 2012 article so the numbers have probably changed - but you get the general idea. A round 3 contract has a pretty good signing bonus and some guaranteed money on top. Salary is likely quite a bit above league minimum (unless you have a reason - like history of drug use - they give you an incentive based contract). Round 6 - you get the signing bonus and probably a contract closer to league minimum. And have to make the team to see anything besides the signing bonus. If you don't make the roster - but are good enough for practice squad - they will cut you, and clear waivers so they can put you on a minimum contract (unless of course Cleveland picks you up...assuming VV is not already in Cleveland via the draft).

Cleveland would be the penance you pay for not staying in school.

The money they receive is not what they thought they would receive or what some so called expert told them to expect.

It felt as if they had some bad information - I do understand why these guys leave early or even Williams leaving - The defense did not play well and as evidenced by the Dline coach getting fired there were issues there as well

We really need the defense to step up this year - not only will it make recruiting better but it also keeps good players here for their senior seasons imo

In Valentine's case, I've seen the argument that declaring now and trying to improve your skills is the best long-term plan as he will play out his rookie contract sooner while also receiving better coaching. However, I think a better plan would have been for him to try to use his starter status on a high profile college team to try to vault himself into the top 3 rounds in the 2017 draft. Essentially, he would forgo approximately a $50k signing bonus and a $400k salary for a chance to get $700k+ in signing bonuses and potentially $1m contract.

Or, another way to put it would be to say, which is the more likely scenario? Valentine is drafted in the later rounds of the 2016 draft (or signed as a free agent) and performs so well that he becomes a top free agent when his contract runs out -OR- Valentine puts together a great senior season, earns all-conference recognition, and is drafted in round 3 of the 2017 draft?

That makes the assumption that players are drafted based on their college performance. That's really only a minor part of it. Players are mostly drafted on potential. Vincent is a big, oft injured defensive tackle with probably a limited number of snaps he can expect in his career. I'm not convinced that spending another year taking snaps at the college level was really going to improve his stock at the next level. If he thought he was going to mature physically in a year (seems doubtful, given his current size) or improve technique-wise (after getting yet another new position coach), it might makes sense to stick around to rack up some stats (questionable without a 3rd round pick next to you) and get more attention from those stats.

My point being: I don't know if Valentine made a smart choice to go early. But being drafted in the sixth round isn't proof that it was a stupid one. It's not a foregone conclusion that he would have improved his stock. At any rate, it's his decision to make. I'm not going to criticize it.

I do think that the thinking behind guys declaring is getting more nuanced. With the revelations happening RE: the concussion issues, guys might be realizing they only have 1-3 years that they would even want to dedicate to this type violence on their brains, and therefore why commit to those snaps without getting paid for it (in college). Maybe they want to get their sign bonus, get paid, and get on with their lives?

Plus paying agents and so forth, I think they'll become poster guys for future huskers on what NOT to do.

I just find it incredible that multiple players could misjudge this that badly???
