While watching Michigan State play in their old gym tonight, I want to know, is it possible to play a college basketball game in McCarthy Gym?

I think it would be a nice way to drum up some interest for one game in our typical soft non-conference schedule.

McCarthy would have to be renovated to some extent. Right now, there are tennis courts on the floor (although that would be an easy fix... since most basketball courts are pieced together and portable), only upper section bleachers that are wooden (portable bleachers would have to be constructed on the lower levels), busted scoreboards, no areas for concessions, and probably would have a hard time meeting any sort of fire code to satisfy the marshall enough to bring 3,000-4,000 people in there for a game.

I really like the idea of having a game played in a rustic setting like that, but a lot of money would have to be put into the gym to bring it up to an acceptable level to host a game.

Current condition:

Heck no.

It served its purpose.
It was the basketball gym when I was in college, and Babe McCarthy was the coach.

I watched some epic games there, against UK (and GA Tech, when they were still SEC).
And other schools. I went to all the games. Great memories.
But it's not worth renovating for any kind of nostalgia.

Shirley the school could put the money to better use.

Don't we have more money than we've ever had before? All the new practice facilities are paid for, and the stadium is paid for through the state. Why not use some of the excess money to renovate the gym?

I'd go when I otherwise wouldn't. The guys were talking about the Jenison Field House being used for a women's basketball game tomorrow. I think they should move a lot if not all of the women's games in there. We went to ONE game before for Lord knows why and I. ****. You. Not. We were the only spectators. They handed us t-shirts when they made 3's.

That would be great and everything, but they should really move some money around the student fund and renovate it for concerts and stuff. The Hump used to have some great concerts, but it kind of sucks for that kind of event. It was awkward for Girl Talk and OAR back in the day. McCarthy would be awesome for similar **** if they kept bleachers. Maybe people would actually buy tickets if they did that and Music Makers stopped sucking dick. I saw DMB almost 10 years ago in a small college gym (probably 4,000 tops) in North Carolina and it was magical.

Isn't McCarthy where we put the skunk under Rupp's bench? As a 5'10" white boy (I've grown to 6'0" since then) I got called for goal tending in an intramural game there. 26 years younger, 2" shorter and a shitload lighter, I could jump and get both wrists above the rim just by squatting and jumping. Now days, I THINK I could touch the net. At least with a running start and maybe a trampoline.

Edited: For sppelling.

It serves as the Department of Kinesiology now, and it could really use a facelift. The bathroom is a freaking joke, the men's at least (can't say anything for the ladies). Hopefully enough proud students will get into PT/OT/or Med school and eventually donate some money to fix it up one day.

I'd love it for one game a year, complete with letting fans in with cowbells. They could have "1963 prices" on the drinks and hotdogs (10 cents for a drink and 15 cents for a hot dog).

Ole Miss is doing this also except it will be "1963 civil rights". Its already a sell out

It was talk about building Kinesiology a new building around the Sanderson. So, they could use their facilities.

We played some of our intramural games there in the early 70's. Most were played in the now gome tin hut!

It would HAVE to be Bryan hotdogs at that price!!!!!11@!!!

Looking back at the history of that building it is comical that I played intramural Basketball, Badmiton, Pillow Polo, etc. in that facility. As with most students I was not up to date with the History of the places you inhabit.

I saw the Dead Milkmen there while in high school. Saw the Indigo Girls too, and was VERY disappointed by the lack of hot girl on girl action at the concert.

I was at both shows as well...

...missed the Dead Milkmen though (why did they open or were the second act?).

Well, you shoulda been at the Roxy in Buckhead circa 1989-1990

for hot girl on girl. Never had heard of the Indigo Bitches (a buddy christened them such - we were big fans) until I went to an REM show at the Omni in '89 and they opened. Stipe coming out on Kid Fears was both awesome and spooky.

About a year later I saw the Indigo Bitches at the Roxy and that's when I first realized how big they were in lesbian circles. The crowd was 90% female and I've never seen so many hot girls mugging down. It was weird, sexy and sad all at the same time.

The Buffett show was awesome. Fortunately, my older sister was a student...

...at MSU at the time. I know she saw Billy Joel perform as well. I think she'd said that it was a free show? Or was there a second show that wasn't free?

Do you remember the shirt Jimmy wore?

Bruce Threadgill jersey. #17 I think.

Seems like both shows were free with your student ID.

Back in the 80's......

We played IM pillo polo, basketball, and volleyball in McCarthy although the latter two were also played in the adjacent tin gym. I remember they had two bulldogs with mouths dripping blood painted on the end walls. My bro who was a PE major at state and a good bit older than me, obtained(legally) and gave to me, back in the 70's, a rim that came out of McCarthy that we put up on the pole in the back yard. It was much heavier than what you could buy in the store. I remember wondering what basketball greats might have shot at that goal. Still got the rim around my folks house somewhere although the pole and backboard are long gone.

I don't remember the Threadgill jersey. I remember where we were-- in the seats to the left of the stage in the old student section. One odd thing I still remember was Jimmy talking about visiting his grandparents in Hickory. I bought a Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefers University of Margaritaville shirt that I wore to school. Funny thing is if I'd done it in the 1990s or 2000s, I probably would have gotten in trouble for wearing it but I didn't. The only time a teacher brought it up was the week after the concert. We had a spelling test & one of the words was "buffet." She told the class that she hoped no one spelled it with an extra F.
