CFB Insider Brett McMurphy Says the Big 12 Might NOT Add UCF to STAY at 8

CFB Insider Brett McMurphy says that the Big 12's decision to either stay with 8 teams or bring 2 other programs in will depend on the pending T.V. deals that could be on the table in the future.

Specifically, they may make more money staying at 8 teams, leading to the end of the UCF to the Big 12 conversations.

If the B12-4=8 were to not add any more teams, that would mean they would need to schedule 5 OOC games. With other conferences having only 3 OOC games, from where would they go to find those 5 games? No, they wouldn't really do THAT, would they?

They would schedule something like:

1 FCS
1 or 2 G5
2 or 3 P5 OOC

Not that much different than now for i.e. WVU which has been playing 2 OOC P5. Just one more to add.

The SEC, B10, ACC and PAC will all still need games OOC at least 1 per school and with 14-16 teams each that's quite a few games. Doubt if they'll only play each other in every game.

Also there are independents: UMass, UConn, BYU.

So until they move on WVUs schedule could be something such as:

h-FCS
h-ECU
h-UConn
A-VT
h-Texas Tech
A-Kansas
A-BYU
h-KSU
A-Baylor
h-OK State
h-TCU
A-ISU

No way that model is appealing to networks. Oklahoma St, Iowa St and WVU will be moving on. 8 team model may initially make a bit more money but that will be a death nail in less than a decade. Hard pass.

2021 NFL Draft
Texas and OU had 5 each so that is 10 picks
Remove them from the Big 12 and put them with the SEC

SEC 75
Big Ten 44
ACC 42
PAC 12 28
AAC 19
Big 12 12
CUSA 5

The story being pushed through the media especially by Houston is that the AAC is today superior to the Big 12.

What makes things even more outrageous is that you could see quite a few more SEC schools now recruit those players that were going to TCU, OK State, Tech and Baylor in Texas.
Pretty much the majority of the other picks in the draft could be ending up at places like Kentucky and Missouri.

WVU will have to bounce. No reason to stay. Even if it is to the AAC.
But if Kentucky moves into Texas to pick up those players it could help WVU recruit Ohio.
Kentucky was one of the schools WVU was fighting with for Ohio recruits

None of the existing BIG 12 schools are going to just leave--they must collect the money that UT/OU owe first. There may be a couple that can't go elsewhere.

There is an 18 month waiting period to depart. There are Grants of Rights. So schools are likely to remain through 2025 so as to keep all the fees they are able in addition to their current contract monies.

Also the possibility that other conferences do not attempt to expand at this time, or for awhile into the future as things shake out.

So staying at 8 rather than inviting schools and or growing and splitting revenues you'll need may make alot of sense.

Sure it make sense to “hang out” and collect the money. However the second any of the remaining schools finds its landing spot they’re gone on the schedule of the new conference.

They will only leave if their costs for leaving make sense. If members are left--who is going to pay GOR and buyout fees? Unless everyone is out the door it doesn't make any sense for schools to depart unless they can afford to pay out millions.

Obviously no one is leaving until it makes sense. 100% every program is on the phone trying to get somewhere that makes sense. 4 of the 8 have contacted the ACC that I’m aware of.

McMurphy is a click bait fraud. He makes ******** up just to hit a nerve.
Absolutely. I love the fact that a lot of his comments are not concrete, with zero substance, and speculation.

The ACC and SEC could merge, as well as other carpenters. Anything can happen. SEC may leave the NCAA, who knows.

One thing is for certain, it’s definitely going to be different. The sport may be circling the drain as well
