I would like to see us do a better job in media relations.

Watching televised broadcasts of our football games, I never feel like we are doing a good enough job of "feeding" the media information and giving them stories to talk about. It's the same old, "history of the cowbell" etc... We need to create our story, feed it to them, and let the media tell it.

Much of what you see and hear about Oxford/Ole Miss these days was fed to visiting announcers when they were in town to work games a few decades ago. The Grove was nothing until the UM media relations department began touting it. The same goes for the Square.

The Square might be pretty cool today, but 20 years ago when they started promoting it, there was nothing much there.

The broadcast public believes what they are told.

We need to entertain the ESPN announcers in a HUGE way every time that they are in town-- roll out the maroon carpet. Feed them fine meals. Tour the new football facility. We need top see some shots of our upgraded facilities, Cotton District at night, etc. Feed them stories, give them B-roll footage, etc. We need to create "our story" and tell it over and over and over. In turn they will tell it, and recruits, potential students and future fans will buy in.

The Grove and the Square were a lot better 20 years ago. Both have been cluttered with the masses.

Feature the growing Junction, the unique dining, the Store and the beautiful landscape that College Station has to offer.

What are your memories of the square from 20+ years ago? Just curious how you remember it.

For starters, it was much less crowded

I think a lot of that has to do with cutting back on on-campus parties. Used to be every fraternity had a party every game weekend, and a band one, if not both nights. Instead of all the hot chicks going to the library, they went to a house. The square was mostly juniors, seniors and graduates it seems. Was also mostly 21+ bars. Except of course The Gin, but that was just off the square.

it wasn't taken for granted that we would be on the square. We would go to Forresters, or have a Thursday party at the house, etc. now the square is definitely the center of everything. There are probably twice as many bars and restaurants there now.
