she spoke to Meridian Rotary club.....fought back some serious tears on how much the state of mississippi has been great to them, how the school, the fans, and the players have been so much better to work with than any other place they have coached....and about the conversation with dan about taking this job....

it will make you all wooly inside, and make you believe its gonna take a little bit more than a few million more to leave, IMO....

sorry if I didnt see germany bomb england.....

after reading that, I'm almost 100% we will beat Auburn right now. But I must tell myself, until proven otherwise, We Are Mississippi State.

that Dan is a little bit cocky and self confident (a good trait in acoach) and Megan is the polar opposite. I can see Dan wanting to take that big job where he has a good chance to win it all, but with it comes unbelievable pressure. Then I can see Megan reminding him that there is more to life than football. Maybe Megan and the cigar boys coming up with 3 million a year can keep him in Starkville for a few years.

then she would play beer pong with us. She's a very cool and down to earthperson. I know one thing; the Mullens love Mississippi State.

Isn't Mississippi School of Math and Science in Columbus? Or is that in Tupelo? Or neither of those places?

especially at a young age...

Mullen will leave Starkville when he is presented with a better job- upper tier SEC, Pac-10, Big 12-2....it will take a top program to get him, and nothing we can do about it...the good side of that is I think he will leave our football program in great shape when he does make that move, thus making a good hire easier

The school system won't be an issue. Hell, an SEC head football coach can afford to home-school with the best tutors. He could even hire McClure to come tutor the kids in math. SEC head coaches don't jump fromFlorida to Vanderbilt because they think theK-4 school system is better in Nashville than Gainesville.

But coach is correct. We hired Mullen with no talent on the roster, an empty stadium, losing season after losing season, and a budget hurt by paying Croom's buyout. If Mullen leaves us in good shape, we can recruit the next coach with good talent on the roster, a full stadium, some winning seasons, and a nicer budget.

You have to hope when hiring a coach that he will leave the program in better shape than he found it. In this day and age in CFB coaches staying long term is rare...even for the big time programs. The days of guys like Joe Pa or Bowden staying for decades is over...just think about the movie The Blindside. Not one of the SEC coaches in that film are still with the teams they were back then. Whether Mullen stays two more years or five more I think we're all confident that the program will be in better shape than in 2008. That is what counts.

just like Ellis Johnson didnt want to say he didnt want to sink on Croom's ship- used the family excuse instead

It's better than looking at someone from State straight in the face and saying- "I got a job offer to coach at Jawja and I couldnt say yes fast enough. I've enjoyed my time here, but State aint no damn Jawja"

recruiting class coming in, that is, assuming he is successful. Honestly, it will take more than a 7-5 trip to the Liberty Bowl to get all these offers. I think he needs a two years of 6-7 wins and big year like 9-10 wins to go the top tier programs.

Dan wants to go the Frank Beamer route and stay for a long time. I'm not saying that is what he will do- I think he will leave in a few years myself- but I do want to point out that some coaches do choose to stay somewhere especially if they are successful and if they like where they are.

A lot of times moving up works out great- like Urban Meyer. On the other hand, some coaches like Rich Rodriguez might be wishing that they had chosen to stay.

At least Dan doesn't seem to be actively shopping himself like other coaches- like Tuberville at Ole Miss and Kiffen at UT. And Dan certainly could have done that with the Urban Meyer health saga this past year. At least he isn't shopping himself yet.

having heard this line before from a young up and coming coach and his wife (witness Thomas Hawley Tuberville and Suzanne) I have to agree.

Urban Meyer drops dead and FLA calls, $#+# the schools in Starkville or anywhere else.

I hope that Mullen stays at MSU for a long time, but the (hopeful) comparisons to Beamer are a little misguided. I understand that he is the best example of a coach that stayed at a school and built the program, but he had a little more interest in the school to start with. Not picking on you, but some people seem to think that Beamer happened to get a job at VT and then just stayed because he liked it there.

Like you said, I find hope in the fact that Mullen is not actively shopping himself. I think he learned from Urban Meyer how to analyze career decisions. Meyer could've jumped to lots of schools from Utah, but waited for the right opportunity at Florida. I think Mullen knows that he's at least in Starkville for a few years, and at that point, he'll wait for the right opportunity. He's a head coach in the SEC, and as long as he can get us bowling, there won't be any pressure on him. I think he's at MSU until he can make a big jump. And if that's the case, it really can only mean good things for us. We just have to make another good hire when he leaves.

Florida State got lucky. Bowden wanted the Alabama job when the Bear retired, but Bama wanted to go through a full interview process and it just didn't work out. By the next time Alabama was looking for a coach, Bobby had built Florida State up to the point that he didn't want to leave it behind.

Now, the chances of this happening similarly for us are very slim, but if you're hoping to have Dan for the long haul, this is the situation you want to happen. You want him to have solid success over the next couple of years, something not work out with some other school, then him follow that up with very good success and then not want to leave that behind the next time. Which takes an awful lot of luck timing-wise.
