Chris Low writes that Condredge Holloway, UT's starter from 72-74, was the SEC's first black QB. Melvin Barkum played QB for us in '72. Rockey was our leading passer that year but Barkum did throw for over 500 yds.

Does anybody know if Barkum opened the season as the starting QB? I thought he started but got beat out by Felker.

Conredge Holloway was on Mike & Mike plugging his new movie called "The Color Orange" (sound familiar) about what he went through as the first black QB in the SEC.

eta: and now after actually reading Low's article I see you already knew all that and more.

My info says:
Barkum and Felker, both Sophs.,shared QB, andand each had more than 1,000 yds. total O, (2,000yds), second in the SEC in passing, only to LSU.

Both were in the top ten in individual tandem offense. SEC.

by virtue of the fact that we played a night game that day. But I was only 8, so I might be wrong. I recall reading an article to that effect at one time. Seems like it was about those two and one more guy that played some that year maybe. Or it could have been the starter/non-starter deal as someone else mentioned.

Good kid. One of my close friends, a UT grad, took Condredge and his mom out to eat after football games.
I'm sure that had nothing to do with him choosing UT.
