The thread on the ship collision this morning reminded me of the bridge problem in Memphis. Since there aren't any newspapers anymore, I have lost track of what happened. I assume it was repaired (?.)

Yes they fixed it. Currently the “old bridge” that I-55 uses is closed for repair so the “new bridge” that had the issue is the only one open.

TDOT and ARDOT announced that they are going to build a new bridge for I-55 starting in 2026.

Location confirmed yet? I'd assume near the old bridge with all the infrastructure changes they are making right now but that might make too much sense...

Looks like the I-55 bridge is open again.

I didn’t realize when the I-40 bridge was closed it would be that much of a mess until I crossed the river in 2021.

Ever since then I’ve been crossing the river at Dyersburg or Helena.

Yeah I55 is back open, as of yesterday I believe. Regardless it's a damn old bridge.

Also thank goodness they finally demolished those ramps on the memphis side and rebuilding the interchange into a smooth turn and with modern exit ramps.

Tenn-Tom bridge at Columbus is under repair now too. It's still open but was hit a couple years ago now I believe and they have waited for insurance money to become available, drawings to be done etc.

I have so much fear of the I-55 bridge now that I can’t drive over it. It terrifies me. Going to St. Louis opening day and will go through Dyersburg as well. I-55 is too narrow, too high up and too old for my liking. My palms sweat and I have to clamp down on the steering wheel with both hands. Last time I just road in the middle and blocked both lanes.

Go across the I-40 bridge instead. 40 and 55 merge for a few miles in West Memphis so you can take either bridge and end up in the same place.

Good to know. Wasn’t sure. Come in on 55 from the South so just always took that bridge
Just follow the signs to Little Rock until you pass the Southland Casino, formerly Southland Greyhound Park, then stay in the right two lanes and follow the signs to StL.

We here in Louisville have been dealing with the Sherman Minton bridge closures, which has a trigger effect of all traveling from Kentucky to Indiana. Thus, we have to take a toll bridge north to go west. We also had a tug barge situation happen a few months ago, tug boat lost its barges and they hit the 2nd st bridge (non toll, old bridge).
Infrastructures are failing, thus the need to pass legislation that deals with it. Not some overinflated border issues that only matter during election years.

I’m struggling to believe the money for infrastructure maintenance has been missing or not planned for originally. Most likely this money has been stolen or wasted on other things. Clearly bridges/infrastructure need attention, but lack of money isn’t the problem. Rant over, not directed at you, just pissed about wasteful govt spending.

We had a similar close call on the US-82 bridge in Tuscaloosa a few years ago. When the estimate brackets came in for waterway pier protection, the project was scrapped to conserve money for a total bridge replacement with added lanes, which is now in the works.
Project is still waiting for…….
More money.

The old Greenville bridge scared the hell out of me.

the part you need to understand is to stay straight on malfunction junction to 240 and then you will follow the sign to I40 Little Rock. 55 and 40 merge through West Memphis then follow I55 like you always did.

I just don't like any high big bridges. I'll cross them when necessary, but I'm just fine when it isn't necessary.

The bridge I hated crossing was an old bridge in Clarendon Arkansas on the way to Stuttgart. It was super narrow with curves that crossed through the White River bottoms. They have since made a new bridge with a bypass of town and torn the old one down.

Dang, I see that bridge on google maps street view. Bridges should NEVER have curves. Something about the shortest distance b/w 2 points...

The old Route 66 Chain of Rocks bridge in STL comes to mind.

If it has curves it should have plenty of room. That thing did not.

Combination of Congress trying to make budgets work with reduced revenue from tax cuts since Reagan (and before they learned to just not care about the deficit), and localities at some point going for cheap repairs (usually due to budget cruches due to inner city decline) which just punts costs for a few years which they then can't handle and it becomes a continual cheap repair 3 card Monte situation. New Orleans roads is a perfect example of the latter.

For both, the annual costs go up the more you opt for cheap repairs. Example, if 5% of roads need repair, but you cheaply pave over those 5% one year, a few yeas later they'll need repair early while the usual 5% needs repair too, for 10% that year. The budget can't handle increased costs , so cheap repair for all of it, wash rinse repeat. A bridge needs repair but it's not closed yet, so punt it. For localities, it's usually road repair, but bridges too. For federal infrastructure, it's been bridges. Rail and ferry etc too i guess. Voters notice highway road problems so that's where the money has gone.

We do have some infrastructure issues in this country and the costs to repair or rebuild are absurd.
Yep. 50 years of doing next to nothing will do that.
We treat our infrastructure in this country like Jackson treats literally everything.

Growing up in Long Island New York I went over bridges all the time to get anywhere. When I first brought my Mississippi born wife to NY she had the same fears many are expressing here. I went out of my way to take the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel going south one trip just so she could experience it. She did not like it as I am sure a few of you here would not.
