Used to live in the Poplar/Highland area and would walk my dog around Galloway GC. One day we’re walking down Poplar and a car going north on Patterson runs a stop sign almost hitting me and tries to make a left across all six lanes. He clips two cars and sends them spinning into someone’s yard and his car finally comes to a rest when he gets t-boned in the middle of Poplar. I‘m standing on sidewalk in shock when I see the driver exit his car, throw a baggie on the ground, reach in his waistband, and start running at me. I yelled don’t do it MFer and hit the deck. Thankfully when he got to the sidewalk 2-3 cops pull up that had been chasing him. He bolts down the sidewalk (towards my house) and the cops chase after him. They finally catch him hiding in my neighbors shed. I’m the main witness and have to stick around for questioning while the cops cuff him and walk him back past me to put in the back of the squad car. He’s probably 10 feet away staring daggers at me the whole time I talk to the cops. I didn’t walk back to my house until they drove him away. That was a just a Tuesday in Memphis
I'm guessing he never found you after he got released since you're still alive.

Absolutley nothing bad has happened to me (knock on wood) but I don't live there but I have spent a ton of time in Mempho.

I did have friend that was behind on his car payment and he was afraid it was going to be repo'ed. This was many years ago when we were much younger men. So, he left the car windows down at a hotel on union avenue hoping someone would steal it and absolutely NOTHING happened to it. The car was there for 3 nights and notta, nothing, zilch...........

Spent considerable time in Memphis, Jackhole, Murderham, Atlanta and Mobile. Nothing ever happened. The one place I had a car broken into (after market CD player - left face on like a moron) was Huntsville, the alleged lowest crime of all of them.

I also had random house casers hit me up twice there. Had to show one my pistol.
There's a fair amount of lower level crime here (like you experienced) but not a lot of murder, considering the size. Most of it is restricted to the near northwest section of town. I think I read that there were 16 murders last year compared to 88 in Birmingham (which was a huge reduction for them from previous years).

I know buddy stories are not allowed but here’s one. He lived in a not so great part of town but had a cool place. His beater car kept getting broken into so he took everything out of it and never locked the doors. They still busted out the windows to find out there was nothing inside.

Got forced off the road at night by a couple of gangbangers who then hemmed my car into the corner of a parking lot. I could tell they were very young, so I reached for my S&W .40 semi-auto pistol, slammed it on the dashboard where they could see it......they then backed up and sped off. Funny that I was on my way home from the indoor shooting range, so I was pumped up, had plenty of recent practice, and more than ready to trade some lead. My only incident in living in Memphis and the metro area for over 40 years.

Random car sitting in a parking lot with the windows down, even a dumb*** knows that is a bait car.

I have heard the deal with stolen cars in MEM is they will strip the car and abandon the frame somewhere. The police will take the fame as evidence and after a while it is sold at auction. The criminals will buy the frame, reassemble the car and get a salvage title.

Lived in midtown right near Overton park. Had one of those steel tube door covers in addition to the regular door. Cracked crow bared it open and stole a couple tvs and silverware.

I'm afraid the score in 2025 was Memphis 184, Birmingham 72.
Both numbers are a drop, so that's good...

Whitehaven was the place to go when my parents were dating in the late 70s. All the restaurants, movie theater, and Southland Mall were there.
that was the only place i can remember to go to the movies when i was young. Mall of Mem came about when I was in HS

I used to work at Yellow Freight on Shelby Dr. I worked 4-10hr shifts on early morning schedules because me and a buddy used to go play golf when we got off at noon. It was 1:30-1:45 am and there was a completely naked women running down the middle of Shelby Dr, I almost hit here as I really couldn't see her until jsut the last minute. I stopped just shy of Getwell and she runs to my truck and tries to get in the passenger seat. She's beaten up pretty good and I see a dude running up now and I tell her to jump in the back and I carry her to work with me just a 1/4 mile maybe from where i picked her up. Police were already on the way they show up in parking lot and take the girl and ask me a few questions. Was crazy.

Wife and I were eating downtown a few years ago on the patio of a nice restaurant. Guy walking down down the Main Street Mall pulls one of those foot long 22 revolvers out of his waistband and shoots it in the air and started chasing a homeless man who was yelling at him beforehand. Police caught him 10 minutes later. Got dinner comped and the whole 9 yards. Food is so good we’ve been back quite a few times since then.

No clue if it was gang initiation or some beef he and the homeless guy had but it was on of the wildest moments in my life.
