Saw this on the news last night. Did not recognize him until they mentioned the part of him being OU's Michael Thompson. Sad to see.

A Tulsa police officer was arrested Monday on allegations that he sold a police-issued handgun and shotgun to a local pawn shop.

The officer, Michael Ernie Thompson, 35, was arrested on complaints of embezzlement and two counts of false declaration of ownership, according to jail records.

Thompson is accused of pawning a Glock .40-caliber pistol and a Remington shotgun at EZ Pawn, 2198 S. Sheridan Road, according to his arrest and booking report. The report alleges that he pawned the shotgun on Oct. 19, 2015, and the pistol on March 23.

Each gun was valued at $340, the report states. Both guns were issued to Thompson.

Thompson, a former University of Oklahoma football player, has worked for the Tulsa Police Department since November 2006. Following his arrest, he was suspended with pay, Police Department spokesman Officer Leland Ashley said.

Thompson was booked into the Tulsa Jail about 6:10 p.m. He has since posted $4,000 bond and has been released, according to jail records.

Thompson, who started at cornerback on OU's 2000 national championship team, was critically injured in a single-vehicle crash in Norman in 2001 but recuperated and returned to play with the Sooners.

He is listed on team rosters from 1999 to 2003.

Damn. Hate hearing this news, especially about a former Sooner. Looks like his law enforcement career is over. Hate it for him, but it was a very bad decision. Hopefully he'll learn from this experience going forward. The article said he's 35, but he still looks 18!

There's more to this story. I can't comment but it'll be out soon enough. Sometimes good folks do dumb things when desperate then it just snowballs.

I'm not a gun guy, so I don't know what kind of money Thompson could have gotten at a pawn shop for these weapons, but I just can't imagine it being too terribly much to risk your career over. Waiting to hear the rest of the story.

I worked at a pawn shop on Saturdays in the 80s.
Max is 25% of retail on just about everything except firearms.
For them it's 50% of retail.
175 each he got for the illgotten booty.

Not a very good trade I'd say.

That's what I'm thinking as well. Maybe there is more to the story that we don't know, and Thompson has a legit response to these charges and it won't affect his career.

I certainly hope so. This could be a life changing event.

What should stick out like a sore thumb is how does a police officer work without his duty weapons? If he pawned them, he'd have to claim them stolen or missing to get new duty weapons.

You get one gun stolen or come up missing, probably an eyebrow raise and some eagle eyeing. But two guns? You're getting investigated hardcore.

Just food for thought.

Plus, when you pawn an item with a serial number it immediately gets entered into the data base. If he says they are stolen the police will immediately search for the guns by the serial number. Viola, he is caught. As a police officer he has to know this will eventually come back to him.

Desperate people do stupid things. I still hate it for him.

This just ruined my day. Thompson was one of the first Stoops recruits. He was a great player until his car wreck took his skills away from him. Really a sad day. And, worse, this was a really dumb thing to do. He had to know the SNs on those weapons would come back to him.

He was arguably as good as Derrick Strait that championship year.

Antonio Perkins made a decent replacement in 2001, but he had his freshman moments.
Our backfield in 2001 could have been Thompson, Strait, Everage and Williams. Rocky and Teddy at LB. Heinecke and Cody at DE. Harris and Klein at DT.

The 2001 defense was arguably the best Stoops defense, but Thompson would have completed the dream team that year. That was our 85 Bears.

Antonio Perkins was probably the best returner in the Stoops era as we know it. Michael Thompson was a talent coming out of Bristow if it wasn't for the serious accident no telling how far he might have gone next to Derrick Strait, Reggie Smith, Roy Williams was recruited by Blake but was made a better player by Stoops and Company.

Are you still unable to comment? I agree with you he seems to be a good guy and a dedicated cop. This just seems like an out of character and desperate action.

I can attest to that.

Thompson and Strait were a fantastic tandem in 2001 and a huge part of that legendary performance against Florida State.

I believe Mr. Thompson is, at heart, a good guy who made a mistake and will pay his dues and recover from this.

No I can't. The end result is that he's charged with embezzlement and two counts of false declaration, all felonies. My hope is that he focuses on the future and does the right thing for his future.

Irony of ironies...that as a felony, it'll preclude him from having a concealed carry permit.

That really sucks to hear. The kid made a horrible mistake and sounds as if he is going to get hit pretty hard for it. :(

I wonder why he had to resort to pawning firearms in the first place? Makes me wonder if he had some type of addiction. Whatever the case, he had to have known better.

Maybe they were Kel Tecs'. If so, the judge should say, "Not guilty. Cased dismissed".

That needs clarifying, Section 22, for us who know little about guns. Mainly because my wife has a 9mm Kel Tec that she doesn't like because "it kicks too hard." I've never fired it. Is it a POS?

Kel Tec is OK. It's just a running joke especially on YouTube reviews. They used to be horrible quality jam-o-matics, but I wouldn't want to stand in front of one. They're better than they used to be. I'd like to own a PMR30, but I won't pay over $500. (30 rounds of 22 magnum).
