Here's exactly why the GOP will lose the midterms:
I'm in a southern battleground state right now, and stopped to fill up my truck. The guy at the pump in front and across of me, Toyota Tundra - American flag sticker in the rear window, Semper Fi and USA stickers on the bumper, construction sticker on the door - suddenly goes "F.UCK! This isn't even gonna get me to f.ucking Wednesday" and sits on the rear bumper of his car to gather himself for a moment.
I glance over. He put in $10. Got 2.27 gallons of unleaded for it. He looks over at me, gets in his truck, gets out of the truck and walks over. Asks me if I have any handyman work I need done, landscaping, whatever, in exchange for some gas. Explains that he's a contractor, hands me a business card with his name on it, says he can show me his license, he'll come by right after work tomorrow. I tell him I don't have anything. He offers to give me one of his tools as collateral. Milwaukee Packout cases in the truck bed. There's a kid in the passenger seat, can't make out age or gender. I explain to him I'm only here for a couple of days, don't even live here otherwise I'd give him a shot. He nods, he gets it.
"MAGA?", I ask him. He looks confused and asks me what I was saying. I said "Are. You. MAGA?". He replies (paraphrasing) "Thought I used to be. Got tricked."
I'm nothing if not a scary judge of character. This guy isn't running a scam, he's legitimately out of plays and on the verge of hocking his tools. I walk over to the guy's pump, tap one of my cards, punch in my zip code, and walk back to my own truck.
Predictably, he's expressive with the gratitude. "thank you so much, mister". "You have no idea how much this helps me". "I hope I can repay you one day, mister".
I just shout over Don't bother remembering who did this FOR you. We're never gonna meet again. You need to remember who did this TO you"
"Oh believe me mister, I F.UCKING know" And that was it; 2 people who never saw one another before and will never see one another again off on our different tracks.
And this is why the GOP is going to lose the midterms: because there is no way to get the guy who only had $10 to put in his tank and got less than 3 gallons of something as trivial as gas to vote for them. There's no way they're going to get a guy who has pride but had to humble himself in front his kid to a complete stranger just to try and get by for a few more days - no matter how many American flag stickers or good ole country boy values he has.
The $105.02 that encounter ran me doesn't even matter. It was a bargain to put another nail in MAGA's coffin. Just to be sure, pulled up the company name on the truck. Same guy, actually has a fairly decent review rating for a contractor.
