Spoke with Mike at the WPHS gym, and he said he was at school to take the ACT. He said he needed an 18 to get in, and he was pretty upbeat about getting at least that. It was a one on one test with someone calling it out to him. He's excited about getting started. Should make a huge impact at WR quickly. I believe he said he'll start practicing July 15th? Not positive on the date.

For a little perspective on an ACT score of 18:

My nephew took the ACT last spring. He said it wasn't quite as hard as he thought it was going to be. He made a 22.

He starts 8th grade this fall.

It's doubtful that once the results come back and he's sent to the clearing house that he will be cleared in time for 2 a days. Odds are he'll miss a couple of weeks of practice. I'm basing it on what I've seen the last couple of years.

After he told me he had taken the ACT, I jokingly asked if he made a 36. He said he only had to have an 18 to get in. He also mentioned something about the SAT. I asked him had he taken the SAT's, and he said "yeah I passed it". That moment was when I realized Mike wasn't the scholar of the 2010 class. A great guy, but not going to be the Student Athlete of the week anytime soon.

I made a 14 on the math section. Yes a 17'ing 14 (with mid 20's to a 30 in the other sections). Yet I went on to successfully pass 33 hrs of math courses at Jones and MSU. I remember leaving the test thinking that I royally screwed up the science section but I made a 30on it. Maybe they got my math and science sections mixed up.

people take on Saturdays (usually). Some of the stupidest kids on earth make 30+ and some of the most successful make 18 - 21.

I always did and so does my oldest daughter (she also just took it and made a 26 before entering the 8th grade this Fall- she is Vandy or SMU-bound)- ex-wife not so much...I just showed up to take the ACT and NTE, no anxiety...no worries..

The hardest part of the NTE was having to take it during Homecoming when we played Ark State to a 6-6 tie. Talk about a distraction while taking it- hearing the crowd roar and **** and not knowing what was going on...

I'm not big on people getting it read to them- if you cant read a test and pass it, I'm not sure you belong in college

I took the NTE that same day. I rushed to the game after the test only to realize the game wasn't worth watching.

A senior in high school would have to answer more questions correctly to get an 18 than someone in 8th grade to get a 22. Or at least I always heard that was the case.

I know our class valedictorian never made anything less than a 95 through school and score 12 on the ACT. My brother was salutatorian of his class and made 16 or 17.

I mean there are 16 points worth of extremely basic stuff. I'm not saying it hasn't happened, but it's not as common as some are acting. Sure, some smart people may not get a 34, but they typically stay above the mendoza line.

make on the test, and it's not a very good one.

I thought the SAT was much more challenging than the ACT.

I know our class valedictorian never made anything less than a 95 through school and score 12 on the ACT.

But if this is true, there is something severely flawed with either A) the ACT or B) whatever education system this took place in.

That just seems impossible. Again, not picking, just dumbfounded.

I do agree though that test results don't indicate intelligence. This however, is just wayyyyyy out there.

That test essentially funded my college education. I don't consider myself particularly smart, but I was smart enough to figure out the higher I made, the less cash I was paying for school. I took it 3 times and got my score as high as I could. The result of a few hours of studying and some sacrificed Saturday mornings...free MSU.

Thank you, ACT and the people that think it's pointless. If there were more people that took it as seriously as I did, I'd probably be paying off student loans right now...

A very long time ago. He took it again and made in the low 20's. The point isn't that he wasn't prepared but that some folks just have a difficult time with standardized testing.

How did I get lumped into this? Are you just being a smartass? I never gave my score but it was very, very good for going to Dumb **** High.

Next time you have a thought just let it go dude.

I don't know but both of these people were smart and made better the next time they took the test. Of course this was many years ago when most of the tests you had in high school were fill in the blank, definition, essay, etc. and not in the ACT format style of testing. As for my brother, he was the worst in the world at getting himself worked up over any sort of test and probably just tanked on anxiety alone.

I took it the night after a football game and homecoming party with little sleep and did quite well, but I always tended to not take high scores to seriously.

Yeah, well you know Mississippi has alway been a hot bed of exemplary education... even back in my day.

imagine how dumb the average american is, then realize they are a lot smarter than this person. I can get the smart person who gets a 23 instead of a 34. But a %++#%*! 16? If you can spell your name and add 10+6 you get a 16. Maybe some kids who work really hard and get good grades but aren't smart can do that. The average IQ of someone who scores a 16 is like 80 or below I think. USCreb I'm sure could enlighten us. Actually, I'll go ask.

I would like to know which schools are bad, so I make sure my kids don't go there.
No way it was Prep, JA, Saint Andrews, St. Joe, MRA, Madison Central, or Murrah..

....where the top score is a 15 or so.

I think that's the whole reason colleges harp on SAT and ACT so much: grades don't mean much in high school, just like in college. maybe they should have a post-college test like the ACT?

i was thinking of the FE, which doesn't give a score (that i'm aware of, but i skipped taking it). I didn't think about the others. I should have thought about the MCAT, i took it.

yeah, it would be kind of pointless to add to all of those i guess for most other majors. i was just thinking of engineering.

If you were being serious, sadly no. But they are usually small public schools in the middle of nowhere, even by MS standards.
