I'm glad someone else was thinking it, because it crossed my mind. I bet the TC would LOVE Tom back. His less coaching hires where less than great to this point (although to be fair, the book is not shut yet on 2 of the 3).
Many on here who aren't TC loved the hire of Tim Miles. Many anti-TC folks even had him on their Sig pics. Tim Miles had a great assistant and when he left, we found out Miles was an average at best coach. Yet Eichorst kept him around.

I don't remember hearing a lot of complaints when Erstad was hired. You could argue that SE should have fired him as well and we probably should be able to find a better baseball coach.

Pelini wasn't the massive failure some people on here want to have you believe. We made it to the conference championship game multiple times. 90% of programs would love to have the record we did under Bo. Pelini wasn't a bad coach, just not good enough for Nebraska. Same thing with Solich.

First of all, look who all 3 coaches were replacing. Doc Sadler literally was probably the best of the bunch. That should tell you why all 3 coaching hires were not immediately hated by the majority of the fan base.

Miles... He does a lot of good things off the court, and didn't sound drunk constantly like Sadler, and on the court caught lightning in a bottle 1 year. His ability to recruit save his skins for a few years, but the losing has caught up. He probably should have been canned at the end of last year, but he has to win this year or will be gone. He was definitely the best of the Osborne hires in my mind, and unless he turns it around this year, will still be a failure of a hire.

Now, as for Erstad... He replaced Mike Anderson. Mike Anderson literally destroyed the baseball program (and Tom kept him too long), so Erstad, while something different from the that tool, is still a guy who walked in here without ANY head coaching experience. You may not know them, but I know people who questioned that move right from the start. But TC, so we'll give him a chance, can't be as bad as Anderson is what I heard over and over. Few years later we have exactly 1 regular season championship & a bunch of early exits in tournaments. Wonderful. Oh and he isn't going anywhere because he donates a bunch of $$$ to the school, so now it feels like the program is hijacked, which is even better.

Pelini... Christ sake don't give me the record BS again. 408 lost every chance he had to win a championship, and got a 70 spot put him vs. a 4 loss wisky team. Came close vs Texas, but his inability to put together even an average offense killed the greatest defense I'll probably ever see. His recruiting was average at best, his development of his highly rated players was piss poor, and he hated the fans. Yeah, 9 wins a years was nice. Congrats. They meant nothing in the long run. How TC can defend this numbskull even today just baffles me.

Miles seemed like slam dunk hire at the time, considering the history of our basketball program. He had completely turned around every program he had ever coached. The hire was praised at the time by all of the respected national media people, as well as by most of our fans. I don't know of any other coach who could have recruited as well as Miles has without bending NCAA rules - I still have some hope that he can get over the hump this year. But it is hard to fault Osborne for this hire when you consider how awful the program is.

Pelini was also a "fan favorite" hire when he was hired. Our defense was in the toilet and he had just led the LSU defense to a national championship. It's hard to fault Osborne too much for that hire either - though I did worry about his recruiting ability at the time and that turned out to be correct. But I don't remember many on this board complaining about the hire at the time.

Erstad I wasn't a big fan of the hire because of his limited coaching experience. I felt that we could have gotten a much more proven coach. Often times, the best players don't make the best coaches. The Big Ten is such a weak baseball conference that I don't know if we'll ever be nationally relevant again - how many great prospects want to play Big Ten Baseball? They either go straight to the pros or to a conference where they will face better competition to prepare them for the pros.

Exactly. Well stated indeed.

Frank & Bo simply weren't the quality of TO or Devaney. But they were both light-years better than Clownahan & MR.

It's not easy finding a HC as good as Devaney or TO. Just brutal.......

I agree. A lot of the non-TC posters thought they were great hires at the time. But circumstances change and they needed to be let go earlier than they were. That was SE's downfall was he kept average coaches around far too long. If he would have been making positive changes in other programs where all our programs suck right now, he would probably still be here.
