Just saw the article in ACT.

Can't say I didn't see that coming.

One of the top receivers in WNC will play at Christ School next year.
Cherokee junior wide receiver Cade Mintz announced on Twitter Wednesday night that he will transfer to Christ School in January.
"I'd like to thank Cherokke for everything they have done for me, but I will continue my academic at Christ School starting in January," Mintz said on Twitter.

Mintz caught 52 passes for 1,083 yards and nine touchdowns in 2018.

Yeah writing was on the wall, kinda surprised it didn't happen this season. You can't blame the family for making that decision, he'd accomplished all he could at Cherokee by winning a state title and next year was going to be a rebuilding year for the Braves either way.

It's basically the same situation that happened at Murphy with Clapsaddle going to Christ School in baseball this year.

I understand what you're saying I've just never agreed with it. Abandoning your school just because they might be experiencing a down year. No loyalty to your school, friends or community...just more of the me, me, me everybody gets a trophy mentality

You have a shot at a great education at a prestigious school and to play against some of the best players in the nation. At least they play private. If it were Charlotte Catholic, Cardinal Gibbons then I could see it much more of a problem. I hate to see Cherokee lose him but good luck to him.

Bigger question does Coach Mintz also look into some other opportunities? Carolina Day? Close to his son, Mintz is from Polk County, has a knocked on the door with his girls team for over a decade. Definitely has the record to get some looks at other schools.

Also I believe R’ville has one more year of Christ. So he will be able to play an SMC opponent one more time at the Oaks.

I speculated as much when this looked like a possibility. Cherokee girls are a title contender this year, would be interesting to see what he does if they fall just short this year because he has a fairly young team. If they win it I'd about guarantee he's gone and he may be regardless.

If he transferred to Charlotte Catholic he would have to sit out a year.

I think he would also need to live with us legal guardians in Meck County or within 25 miles or the school.

Cherokee has absolutely no shot anymore. Mintz goes from being a big fish in a little pond to a little fish in a big pond. He is a special athlete i hope he gets playing time for the all stars. Dont blame him for leaving...our coach didnt give him the ball enough last season in my opinion. He should have been the qb in the 1st half vs Mitchell....not wait till its pouring down rain in the 2nd. Or at least run some reverse's or something to get him the ball more. He will be missed at cherokee. At least the girls basketball team is good. As long as murphy stays small....mintz or no mintz cherokee wasnt beating them regardless. Serious ? does cherokee have any good football teams in the future? or will they be bad for awhile?

It is down in the youth league around age 10 or 11 before you see much talent. The JV teams have been largely uncompetitive the last three years (granted a few of the 9th graders were playing up). There is a serious chance that Cherokee finishes last in conference next season. I think Andrews is a solid 4th now, Hayesville (if healthy) has more talent than Cherokee, and Rosman is down.

I can understand the opportunity being good for some kids definitely, but do not ever want to hear that they do not recruit players. I am in agreement that any local public schools should just let them fill their game schedules with other private schools in Charlotte, Winston or Greensboro. As far as always playing the top talent in the Southeast I would question that. Most of the time many 2A, 3A or 4A teams in the state can destroy the Private School State Champions. I wish nothing but the best for Cade. He is a great kid and very hard worker.

I think that's usually true, but also that private school football is getting better fast. This year the private state champ gave the 3A state champ their only loss.

Correct, would have to live within 25 miles of the school.

So it’s ok for Charlotte Catholic to recruit and play PUBLIC school, and ok for Murphy, swain etc. to get transfers through the years to win state titles. But if Christ School gets kids and plays PRIVATE it’s the second coming of the devil. Sorry but that’s unfreaking believable to me. I mean if Christ school was playing public school then I would be raising holy hell like I do with Catholic. But guess what - THEY DON’T!

Cry more, please. As a coach at Catholic I'm missing our recruits because I see none. However, I'm not going to engage about us on a 1A thread, this is about Cherokee/Christ School.

I’ve said it before. The next competitive team at Cherokee will be this year’s mite team

You’ve had them from all over and I know that for a fact. And that’s for decades. You should be private school period. At least have the balls to play 4AA if you are going to play with public schools. Catholic is the biggest joke and fraud ever in the NCHSAA

Well I have a hard time believing that they haven't figured out a way to get a message to a boy and his family that they are interested in him. But I don't begrudge any parents that can get thier son an education that a private school can provide. What surprised me is that I've always heard that they give athletic scholarships which didn't suprise me being a private school. But Christ school stated that they don't give scholarships. But I just wondered if maybe they get some of them a low cost tuition and just call it a grant because Day school tuition is $27,745 & boarding ( which most do) tuition is $52,245. While they do have financial aid and grants that's a lot of money especially considering that most mountian county median household income is about 40 to $45,000 per year.

I am not a CC fan nor do I have any affiliation with them (except as an opponent). I think most posters know this.

Over the years it has appeared to me the vast majority of their varsity starters came from their feeder middle schools unless they moved from out of state where they also attended Parochial school. Are they “recruiting” their varsity starters at elementary age? I am also pretty sure that nearly every player is a member of the local Diocese.

In addition, if a student attended a public or private school and transferred to Catholic but were already living in the area Catholic does not allow the student to participate in sports for 365 days.

Christ School is as dirty as the come. What makes Catholic even worse is they do it and play in public school league. I feel fue Cherokee because the kid sold them out

Christ School appears to be bringing in students from the local area that have been playing for their local high school team, providing them tuition assistance, not requiring them to sit out 365 days, and allowing them to reclassify.

Please enlighten us as what Charlotte Catholic does?

I mean I’m a Cherokee through and through . The kid didn’t sell out . He played hard every game started both ways all three years punted returned kicks and punts . I’m not sure he ever came off the field . I’m gonna miss seeing him play but I understand .

It's no different than a kid leaving a public school to go to another school to get academics such as the School of Math & Science. This is just for sports, which will hopefully open doors for him for a better college with the grades if he has them.
