I would be willing to bet that we are capable of beating them, but I don't know if we're a better team. Also, we held Cam to 17 before his talents were truly being exploited.
I'm happy with where we're at. The future seems bright. I don't want to get too ahead of myself, but it seems highly probable that we're just going to continue to get better. There's no doubt in my mind that we're a top 15 caliber team. A lot of the teams that's going to be ranked ahead of us don't deserve to be, but we are a damn good team.

The earlier comment by another sixpacker about us playing Auburn at a point in the season that was before they had fully realized how to best utilize the mule can also be applied to MSU, too. At the second game of the season, we hadn't fully developed the best use of Elliot and Ballard. Relf also got better at passing and making decisions as the season progressed. Auburn is not the only team that got better.
In my eyes, we're both completely different teams at the end of the season. Because of the differences, it's hard to say how we would stack up against them. Did they make a bigger leap then us or did we have more improvement over all? It's just a hard thing to assess right now.

I'd say the bears have a genuine reason to gloat a little bit. They didn't have a national championship caliber team that year as proven by their losses, but they certainly can claim that they were one of the better teams in 2008. Denying that would be idiotic.
As a matter of fact, I was at every home game and was at the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville. I believe that Elliot made contributions this year and improved, even if not as much as perhaps we had hoped for. Horrible? - No. Could be better? - Yes. Best role is on the bench? - I disagree. While his season was not as good as Ballard's, he did contribute and got better as the season progressed.JohnDawg said:

They claim they have 3 national championships and dont have any. Hell, on the side of their stadium it says "2003 SEC Western Division Champions." Auburn was the 9th best SEC team in total defense, yet they held this "unstoppable" Oregon offense to 19 points. State's defense was just as good, if not better (holding Denard to 14 points, Cam to 17, etc.) so it's really a question of whether MSU could put up 21 or more against Oregon's defense? I'm no homer, but I think they could.<div>

I bleed maroon and white, but it's not very likely that a 15th ranked team is "better" than a 2nd ranked team at the end of the season. I guess it makes some people feel good about themselves to make such claims. Take a nationwide poll that excludes MSU fans and see what kind of result you get on this question. I prefer to boast when we actually EARN the ranking as opposed to speculating our way to a national championship. Besides, we all know Boise State is really the best team in the nation.
To me what improved about Au. was their use of other players. No 5 comes to mind and the gut I don't know his number was in the 40's catching passes. However the way we will miss Manny I think will be in adjustments and if we played Au. now and still had Manny his adjustments may win us the game.
