I'm going to do something I haven't done very often and that is give Lebby/Hutz some credit for their portal work this past offseason. Not a lot of highly rated guys, but they brought in players that can play in this league.

With that said, regardless of what the 247 class rankings may say, I still feel like we're way behind the rest of the SEC when it comes to the caliber of recruit that we're able to get. Maybe it's the last two years of sucking, maybe it's NIL, or maybe kids just aren't interested in Starkville. I don't know, but we aren't drawing from the same pool as the rest of the league, and I think we can put the "we've never lost anyone we wanted" claim to bed. Sawyer Robertson, Woody Marks, Mario Craver, and Kevin Coleman are doing alright

I agree with you. We were never at the top of the SEC but we were getting respectable classes under Mullen AND Leach.
My guess is that in the current environment, recruits want 2 things: as much $ as they can possibly get, and to play for a winner. Putting aside all the thoughts I have about $, NIL, etc., there’s been nothing over the past 2-3 years to suggest that a recruit would play for a winning team at State. That reality puts our coaches in a bind because you basically have to win in order to get the quality of players that you need to win. Which is why I’m impressed with most of the portal class and the way our team is playing. I think Lebby is doing more with less than I thought him capable of. Hopefully a good season will lead to better recruiting and we can start to dig out of the hole we’re in.

We're going portal heavy and not spending on HS recruits much. But MO has money and is using it.

You have to pay. I know an LSU player, a backup who rarely played and still rarely plays, making $50 grand this year.

Memphis recruiting will start doing better also. Not only did Fred leave a big donation to their NIL before he died, but that a significant part of his estate will also go towards the university for academic and athletic purposes. We're not talking millions, but multi multi millions.

TBH …. I wouldn’t sign but 8-10 High School players a year, but those would be players that could contribute immediately. You can continue to recruit HS players to keep a relationship when it is portal time.

I'd rather spend on Y3,4,5 guys than Y1 just for them to bolt in Y3. QB is probably the only exception to that, but with how well we've overhauled the roster this year - I think two more off seasons showing near linear growth in talent / depth and we're where we want to be.

Spend smarter not more is a tongue in cheek joke, but you can sort of money ball this.

I'm starting to think we should sign players to 2 or 3 year contracts and have a buyout clause where MSU is paid back the time we missed out on.

They are in the game with NIL, but everybody is now with rev share.

But the biggest thing is that Drinkwitz has a good reputation as a coach.

The old things still matter.

I'm going to continue to stick with this as the main issue we struggle with high school recruiting in the SEC. Smallest State with 3 D1 programs with a school built in the wrong part of the State that has never had real economic development and therefore Target will not build a store there.

It is a combo of all those I assume. We have to be real with ourselves, we are the poorest SEC school in a State and city where not much is going on so we have to be very smart about how we operate. We need to go All-in on QBs and then pick our spots/years to go all-in on the rest of our roster.
This year was very important to anti-up just for fan support and morale purposes. Our next big year should be when Kamario takes his progress to the next level. We can’t afford to spend 20+ million every year on a roster so we need to stockpile resources for the years we can.

The way we have misused KT this year I imagine the likely hood he’s at state next year is very small.
