Bud Selig has apparently asked the Houston Astros new owner to move to the A.L. evening the leagues at 15 each. The Astros join the AL west with the Rangers, A's, Angels, and Mariners. All teams play each other 8 times leaving exactly 50 games for interleague play for each team. No more playing the teams in your division 18 times. Their will be atleast one interleague game everynight also. I love this idea. I also love our military, thanks for all that you do for this wonderful country.

Playing everyone in your league 9 times leaves 36 interleague games, which is more than enough.
Or 10 times leaving 22 interleague games, which is better.

The Astros should have been moved to the American League a long time ago. It's just simply not fair for teams in the NL Central. I hate interleague baseball though. In fact, I think we should do away with divisions and only 2 teams from each league make the playoffs. Call me old school, but I hate seeing teams (although I'm a Giants fan) win a World Series because of 3 and sometimes 2 players. If you're going to have 162 games make every damn one mean something, play the 17'in World Series in October, and revive baseball. It's dying.

But to have have different rules for the AL and NL when there are that many inter-league games makes no sense. And adding the DH in the NL is unconscionable.

They're going the other direction. 2 wild cards playing each other as a play-in series. I'm all for that, as it puts more importance on pitching depth.

I just disagree with the idea. Shorten the season, shorten the playoffs. Baseball season goes too long as it is. There is no reason Major League Baseball should be played in November, absolutely zero.

The Astros fell, and fell hard over the last few years. The Biggio, Bagwell, Beltran, Berkman teams were unbelievably stacked hitting and pitching. They should have won the world series a couple of times. They've been a rival the Cardinals for so long I'd had to see them go, but like I said, they're not relevant at the moment so it doesn't matter.

I actually like watching baseball, but I don't like watching people play baseball in ski jackets.

Make the Boys of Summer mean something. Make the regular season May-August with playoffs during Sept. so make the season like 100-115 games.

I'd be all in favor of that, but since it's all about $$, you'll never get the owners and player's union to agree to something like that.

The Astros have such a long history in the NL as opposed to Arizona. Then they could move the Astros to the NL West to replace the D-Backs. Makes more sense to me.

I love interleague games. I think it's great for baseball. You don't see the other sports complaining that they have to play other teams in other divisions/leagues. So many great rivalries are just now starting because of interleague play.

I'm OK adding another wild card. Maybe because the Cardinals would have a better chance at the playoffs this year if they had one. Maybe I just like seeing people happy- I don't know. I don't like the idea of it being a one game deal. Make it best two out of three.

I do agree that the season is too long in terms of ending in November. I think it would be better to start the season sooner, start spring training sooner and cut out 2-3 weeks of exhibition games and start the season in March- like March first. Start spring training games in Feb. or so. End the regular season in Aug. and have the playoffs in Sept. and then let that be the end of it. It seems to me like people are most interested in baseball from Feb- July 31 and then it's time for football to start. They could still keep the season at 162 games. Everything would be done around Oct. 1.

Shortening the season to around a 140 games or so and playing the playoffs in September. That would mean the world series would actually be played in October.
I hope the new cba will have something in there along those lines as well as elimatint the DH all together and have both leagues use the same rules. That's just me though.

the season is way too long but they can't reduce the amount of games. 162 is what everyone has been playing for forever and all the records and stats are based on that amount. They could eliminate a lot of spring training and have doubleheaders on Sundays. That would eliminate a month. Expand the rosters and you won't have problems with pitcher fatigue.

Which is why Roger Maris' 61 HR was controversial because the Babe hit 60 in 154 whereas he had 8 more games

They're thinking of shortening spring training, and cutting most of the off days during the playoffs. Still 162 plus four rounds though.

They should have never been moved to the NL in the first place. I like 6 divisions with 5 teams each. Hate adding more wild card teams. Think in interleague play everyone should play every team in the other league twice for a total of 30 games. Most teams would either play 7 road series and 8 homes or the opposite. Mets-Yankees, Cubs-White Sox & Dodgers-Angels would play home-and-home. Play teams in the other 2 divisions in your league 9 times, and in your division play 2 teams 10 times and 2 11 times. Like the idea of shortening the season and/or spring training, but neither will ever happen.

i agree about the games. baseball is such a records based and numbers based game, that changing the number of games played really messes with what some many love about baseball. yes they went from 154 to 162 60 years ago. but that was still 60 years ago, it's not like the 162 game schedule is some new-fangled idea for tv.<div>
</div><div>the problem with playoffs going until november is off days. i know you wanna get the best SPs as many starts as possible, but to truly test a team, play easy series with 1 off day. 1st week of october play the wild card round (5 games in 5 or 6 days). 2nd week play the nlcs and alcs in 8 days. 3rd week play the series in 8 days. you'll be done by the end of october.</div><div>
</div><div>yeah i know teams gotta travel, but they spend april thru september travelling all over the country and getting into a city at 4 am and playing that night or getting in a 10 am and going straight to the park. </div>

when they moved the brewers, but the diamondbacks wanted to stay in the NL and they were given veto power over it as part of the agreement for expansion? Not sure about the last part but I remember they could block the move and they did.

Why not 12 games intradivision? That would make 48.
6 games intraleague that would be 60, making 108.

then you could have 54 interleague games.

I think there needs to be intradivision weight, although its easy for a Ranger fan to say that as opposed to an Orioles fan.

They need to follow the NFL's example on just about everything, and the sooner the better.

Looks like they're finally looking into, you know, having the same number of teams in each League/Division, which really seems elementary. An extra wildcard is a great step to keep the absurdly long and tedious regular season (which needs to be cut short by a month or two) interesting. Next thing they need do is have uniform rules across the entire league. How is it possible that this didn't happen 30 years ago? Add in a pitch clock and instant replay, and you might have a watchable sport.

While some(most?) of his efforts have been an effort to revive interest in the game, they been "just piddlin'" efforts. Both college and NFL football have passed MLB in popularity and half-hearted changes aren't the cure. If more dramatic changes are implemented soon, MLB will drop below soccerin popularity within 20 years.

Asking a NL team to switch leagues is fine, but it's simple a "uh-oh, we messed up, we better fix it" move.Selig never should have moved his club (The Brewers) to the NL back in 1998 for the sole purpose of making it easier to facilitate/schedule interleague play.

The season ought to be 152 games long: 10 games against each of your intraleague opponents, and 12 games (six 2-game series) againstinterleague opponents.

Regular season: April 1 -Sept. 25.
Playoffs (Round 1): Sept. 27 - Oct 3 (Includes five games, one travel day and one rainout day GGTGGGR Games1 &3will be afternoon games)
Playoffs (LCS): Oct. Oct. 6 - Oct 12 (Includes five games, one travel day andone rainout day GGTGGGR Games1 &3will be afternoon games)
Playoffs (WS): Oct. 14 - Oct 25. (Includes seven games, three travel days andtwo rainout days GGTGGGTTGGRR Games1 &3will be afternoon games)

I'd love to see more replay used, but, in reality, baseball doesn't lend itself to replays nearly so well as football does. (Example:One out, runners at the corners. Batter swings and strikes out, runner @ 1st tries to steal and is gunned downby the catcher. Meanwhile, the runner at 3rd breaksfor home. Out #3 is calledat 2B when the the runner from 3rd is halfway to home. Replay shows the call at2B was wrong. Where do you place the runner from third considering that the defense didn't try to defend homeplate after the third out was called at2B.)

it was retarded to have some divisions with only 4 teams and the NL Central with 6. Which I guess some could argue that with Pittsburgh and Chicago, technically, the NL Central only has 4 teams.

From what I remember the Brewers were picked because they were considered to be in more of a "National League" city- see the Milwaukee Braves for reference. The reason they weren't in the NL to start with was because they were originally the Seattle Pilots and moved to Milwaukee after one season in Seattle.

He is certainly not without fault- Strike in1994, steroid scandal, All-Star Game tie, and my personal favorite- trying to contract the Brewers biggest competitor the Twins. That was just wrong.

That said, he has brought labor peace- something unheard of in baseball, and really unheard of in most pro sports- including the NFL. He brought in the wild card, looked at expanding the playoffs, brought in interleague play, started the World Baseball Classic, and any problems that have arisen in baseball, he went ahead and took measures to correct them. There are new and or renovated stadiums in almost every MLB city as well and he brought MLB back to Washington DC and out of Montreal. Baseball has continued to grow its international roots- especially in Asia.

I think that there will be more things coming such as draft reform, and last year MLB had a committee with all kinds of baseball people- players, managers, owners, former players, writers, etc.- to discuss all kinds of issues such as what we are talking about right now.

Maybe I just remember how bad Fay Vincent was to appreciate what Selig has done. Vincent did not want to change anything with baseball- and he was killing the sport. He was an uber purist. And had Bart Giamatti not died, I think he would have been equally as bad. All he did is sit on his *** and write poetry about baseball and suspend Pete Rose.

I meant when the Brewers moved, the glaring hole was the AL West and the obvious fix was AZ. Everything would have been great, but AZ could refuse it and they did. They may all have the right of refusal - that is why you see it now with the purchase of the Stros as a condition of purchase.

I have always hated TX being in the west - staying up late for the west coast trips kills me. At least we are winning now. Staying up late when we were losers really sucked - reminded me of the beginning of the Braves broadcasts on WTCG - initially they were tape delayed - staying up till 11 pm to watch them play was a killer even on a 12 year old :)
