not because of the salary- but because of the prospects or lack thereof. I think the Mariners would definately want Shelby Miller and someone like Lance Lynn at the very least and probably at least one more player, and I don't think the Cardinals are going to do that.
I actually think Rasmus is the second best player on the team right now besides Pujols, but there is a strong arguement for Ludwick and Yadier Molina. I don't think anyone should underestimate what he does on the field as far as handling the pitching staff and controlling the running game. Freese has had a nice year so far. He's under the radar because of guys like Strasburg and Heyward as far as rookie of the year candidates, but I did not expect him to be hitting over .300 at this point.
The Cardinals have been hitting a little bit better with Holliday in the two hole, but I'm not going to get excited until they actually face someone better than Luke French and Ryan Rowland-Smith and a Seattle team that has horrible pitching.
Obviously, I think the Cardinals plan is to go with Suppan, who pitched well tonight, and then wait until Penny gets better and go from there rather than trade for someone for now. I think Duncan will help Suppan out and he will be a five-six inning guy at the back of the rotation and be very helpful for the team. Penny, I don't know. How he comes back will determine what the Cardinals will do as far as going after another pitcher.
It is tempting to think about a Carpenter, Wainwright, Cliff Lee, Garcia, and Suppan/Penny rotation. That would be a starting staff that would be good enough to win the thing in October.
