According to this LSU beat writer, Alabama is their big rival.

Alabama means something to LSU

A few quotes:

The Ole Miss rivalry was meaningful in the 1950s and '60s, but for the most part since then it has not been the same as the Rebels only sporadically compete in the Southeastern Conference West and have never made the SEC Championship Game.

"We circled that one on the schedule," LSU tailback Stevan Ridley said. "We definitely want that win. I don't think we need any more motivation. We've lost to Alabama two straight years now. We're going out there with something on our mind and on a mission to beat Bama. Oh yeah, definitely, Alabama's our rivalry. You know your big games. It's like the holidays. When a holiday's coming up, you get nervous and you get excited."

All SEC West teams have history with each other, and thus we all hate each other a good bit, but the Alabama game means more to LSU right now because of Saban, just like the Ole Miss game is important to Arkansas because of Nutt and just like the Auburn game was important to Ole Miss because of Tuberville.

LSU-Alabama is no more a traditional rivalry than MSU-Auburn or Ole Miss-Alabama.

If you go by the argument that a rivalry has to be 2 sided, that's another strike against LSU trying to claim Alabama as a big rivalry game. LSU is no better than the 3rd most hated team on Alabama's schedule in a given year, if that. Auburn and Tennessee will always be more important.

I'm sure they will once again embrace the rivalry between us and them. The question is "Now that we are a team on the rise, do we still consider them to be our true rival?"

Once again, we have proof that the two conference retard programs love to argue over which one is the least retarded.

Well, Mr. Black Bear fan, it appears this year's conference retard karma has decided that it's y'all's time in the *******. Looks like deez retards is going bowling, MFer.

that goes back to before Ark joined the SEC. So you don't even know about your own program's rivalries. <div>
</div><div>If you look at the LSU vs. Bama record from 1982-2009 it's been pretty competitive. I agree that Auburn & TN are Bama's traditional rivals.</div><div>
</div><div>Edited to add: LSU has won 13-14-1 vs. Bama beginning in 1982. (if I counted correctly) I would also say the LSU is to Bama what OM is to LSU. </div>

Would be the only team in the West that never actually won the West.

Now, who's that? I'm kinda thinking today it's the only unranked West team.

See, here lies the difference between State fans and Bear fans. We know we've had a tradition of losing. Of losing big. Of losing small in big games. Hell, losing small in small games to smaller teams. Nobody is more abused than a Mississippi State fan, but we own it. We wear it as a badge of honor. This site tells you beforehand "Abandon all hope"...

During a roll like we're on now, we're cautiously optimistic, but we're never glib to the point that we can't acknowledge the logs in our own eyes. Yeah, it's an abusive relationship, but even through the tenth of a second tip ins, LSU 1st and goal at the one, the field goals that fly backwards, the fourth quarter meltdown the SEC CG, Remember the Maine! and giving up 30 points to Oregon in the first quarter, we managed to keep Florida from beating us at home for 25 years, we beat Alabama 3 years in a row, we beat Texas twice, we reached a Final Four, we won the SEC West, and won 3 SEC tournament championships. Now, even though Mississippi has never managed to accomplish any of those things, we don't have the wool pulled over our eyes enough to believe that we're somehow clearly superior. We may not have given up our integrity and our identity like *#$@$*#@+#$%!+!*$** did, but we can't simultaneously be intellectually honest and act like our program is vastly superior.

Bear fans... on the other hand... hang NC banners for all the years they finished #2 in the polls. Your speed limit signs celebrate a man who was walking around in Volunteer Orange, while his eldest son turned up his nose at the thought of playing in Oxford. You lose to Jacksonville State and Vandy, but discount wins over Florida and Georgia. You're so blinded by red and blue, you can't see your own warts. You're still holding on to a glorious age that never really happened, and even if it did, it happened decades before half your fan base was born.

Again, I'm not saying Mississippi State is vastly superior to the Bears, I'm simply saying it's past time that you guys cooled it with the Napoleon complex.

Some of us actually own that. From what I see in this thread, there is a segment of your fans that aren't much different than ours when they get a chance to puff out their chests. I'm assuming most of the pent up aggression comes from the Croom era. Ours came from the Orgeron era.

As I've always said, you have up years, you have down years, but every program finds its way back to its mean over a long period of time. You can fool your program status for maybe even as long as a decade or so, but it'll creep back to where it belongs over time. In the modern era, that's 5th and 6th in the West for our two programs. We may be around 8th or 9th overall in the SEC in program status, and you may be 9th or 10th. You'll have up periods and down periods, but average it out over a 20 year period with at least 4 or 5 coaching tenures, and the mean will usually fall in that range. For example, your 1990s decade was a full decade where your program overachieved its status. You made up for it with the 2000s, where your program underachieved its status. The average was about where your program normally will be over a 20 year period.

It was another regional team that we played a good bit basically. You could compare it to LSU playing Texas A&M for a while there. They used to play a good bit OOC, but it was not more of a rivalry than the other conference games on their schedules. Arkansas is no more of a rival to us in the long term than Bama or Auburn. They're just another SEC West team we hate, but that game doesn't carry any more meaning to the fans than any other division game. MSU and LSU will always be the games with the most hatred for us.
