Story

As I told you guys yesterday there won't be a Scoop for the next few weeks so I'm going to post tidbits as we get them rather than saving them for Fridays.

That being said there is no where I can start before talking about Brenham (Calif.) Blinn C.C. five-star quarterback Cameron Newton.

There have been a lot of questions about when Oklahoma got involved with Newton and he says while he has been talking to Josh Heupel for quite some time it was in the last few weeks he felt the Sooners get serious.

"I could feel they were interested for the most part and I think with the quarterback play and what I bring to the table, they became more interested in a quarterback like me," Newton said.

And then Newton brought in some language not heard since the days of Tommie Harris' recruitment.

"Just recently they gave me a scholarship offer, it's crunk up now, they crunked the whole thing up. Boomer Sooner is at full effect right now," he said.

The 6-foot-6, 247-pound signal-caller had a chance to spend a lot of time with the Sooner coaching staff, Heupel in particular but also got to know head coach Bob Stoops while on his visit.

"His message was pretty similar to coach Heupel's, everybody wants to put it out there, we aren't recruiting a junior college quarterback just to be here. We're trying to recruit him so he can come in and play," he said. "They feel that they can make me better as a player and they think that I can make them better as a team."

And whether or not Newton can buy into that is his exact concern.

"No. 1 is trust, I have to trust the coaches and the coaching staff," he said. "I would probably say second most important for me is playing right away and not just playing but how I can be developed as a better player."

Talking to Newton the visit couldn't have gone much better, honestly he sounded like a guy that was debating about a commitment. Now post-visit high is always something to be aware of but there is no denying the Sooners convinced Newton that Oklahoma was his best chance to be surrounded by talent and that he would be given every opportunity to start.

I don't know if a big school like them is willing to, uh, deliver, when they already have a ready-made QB with experience. Not saying they can't, I'm just thinking that they won't. We will.

Coach Trust = Dan Mullen

Playing time = Mississippi State

If he goes to OU and doesn't get the starting QB job he will regret it the rest of his life.

Has he ever had a bad visit? I am ready for him to announce one way or another. This crap is rediculous.

and he will be conservative and play the guy with experience first. Satan says the QB is just the distributor of the ball, not looking for him to win the game. Cam wants to make an impact, he can do that here, not sure about OK.

for 1 freaking play. Cam get your arse to MSU and take the sure thing (playing time). If you go to OU, you will be risking sitting on the bench for the rest of your college career which equals NO NFL. Come to MSU and have the chance to be a superstar. If you do great things at MSU, you will be noticed nationally, trust me. Please research the name Jimmy Johns that went to Alabama and see how that turned out. You are a backup plan for OU and you are part of "THE" plan for MSU.

I'd do the same thing. We as fans would love for him to announce one way or the other, but we are talking about his life here.

Have we seen enough to say he has it all? I thought I heard some say that his passing was nothing spectacular (of course better than Relf). How did he look in the Juco Championship game?

How is his leadership? Really...I mean the guy got kicked out of school at Flordia for stealing laptops and throwing it out the window. Who does this ****?

This is his chance at redemption and his last chance. I hope he really ponders this decsision and Trust the Mullen....

\lame attempt to spin this

he turned out ok. I know that WR is a different position that QB, but people make mistakes. And I think he bought a stolen laptop, didn't steal it himself. I could be wrong though.

I don't know QB mechanics so I really have no way of evaluating how good/poor Newton is throwing the ball. The results didn't look great during the championship game, but he also had very little time to look for a receiver. He was forced to make a hurried pass, or scramble.

For the time being, it's hard to argue with nearly 3,000 yards passing, 60%+ completion rate, 22 TD's and 5 Int's. I would assume he's, at worst, average.

OU might be his last serious visit and the only school we might have to worry about because they have the system there that he wants to play. I don't think they're serious at all about an upcoming visit because they've said they might not take it. So I doubt they pick the next school whether that be Auburn or UNC.

Spread QBs get a lot of their passing yards from yards after the catch. They may have great yardage and a solid completion percentage but they are only throwing dinks and dunks. How well do they throw the long and intermediate balls? Stats can be real misleading in this day and age of the spread O.

Or Jason White. That Mike Leach system and all of its predecessors haven't done a lot for producing NFL QBs. It has produced some sick college offense though and 2 Heisman trophy winning QBs at OU in particular in the last decade. That's not bad.

Granted, you probably wouldn't want to take the approach of comparing past QB results with another school in recruiting, since Wayne Madkin and John Bond are probably the best you have to offer.

Which is why I left the option of him being an average passing QB out there. However, I think the JUCO talent level would be bigger factor here with regard to inflated stats. Blinn runs a system very similar to ours and their season pass: run ratio was 45:55. Newton averages 28 pass attempts per game. I don't their system sets up well to inflate passing stats via high volume of attempts/screens/etc. (ie Houston offense) - but, shoddy secondaries might.

I had to look it up because those numbers brought back horrible flashbacks for some reason.......

3,000 yards, 40 TD passes with 6 INT's, almost 900 rushing yards and another 10 rushing TD's. Recruited by Tony Hughes. Set 11 school records at his JUCO.

That is Brent Schaeffer's stat line from College of the Sequoia's.

If he'd have just been average I think OM fans would have been happy. If you get Newton I hope you watched us learn our lesson on JUCO QB's with high expectations that were trouble their first time around. Problem players from JUCO's or transfers from other programs tend to disappoint.

Just sayin'.

versus OM recruiting Schaeffer is that, regardless of the stats either had at JUCO, Mullen has personally coached Newton for 2 years at Florida so he above anyone else should know if Newton is really who he wants. Obviously Mullen has long ago decided that his is and has reportedly put him as the number 1 recruit on our board. That's good enough for me.

.......he won't choose OU because it'll likely be a mistake and he'll end up wasting two years on the bench or being moved to TE. Well, it won't be the first time an MSU recruit has made that sort of mistake, as we all know. Jimmy Johns comes to mind, but so do many other recruits from the past. I can remember several top running backs who we lost out on to places like Tennessee, who would have started at MSU but ended up on the bench behind three or four other 4/5 star running backs for their entire career. It's a shame, but unfortunately God hasn't blessed everyone with common sense.

I still hope we get Newton, from the get-go I saw this sort of thing coming. It was only natural for us. I might pass out from a heart attack and die the day when we do finally seal the deal on a top QB prospect from out of state.

Let the dumb bastard go. Tyler Russell is young, ready, and can take the lead. Let Newton have the "Love Fest" continue. Trust Me, I will take Russell before this over blown self made rock star.

is MSU fans that think that just because we are competing with a big time school like Oklahoma that we should just tell the recruit to <17> off.

I mean, for MSU football to be good, we need GOOD players that people actually want. Croom had virtually an entire class or two of guys that "wanted" to be Bulldogs, and they were two of the worst that we've ever had. Yeah, you sometimes lose a good player, but you also sometimes land a Pernell McPhee.

If we were Texas, maybe then we could tell them to make a pick, but we're not. And it makes even less sense to just stop recruiting Newton when we do have a lot of things in our favor. Newton wants to make a big production out of this great- I can't say I wouldn't do the same if I were him.

or just sucks it up? I dont understand the logic behind telling Newton to 17 off just cause he hasn't jumped in the boat yet. He has never committed to us, so let him take his time and make his own decision.

QBs under Mullen have done great no matter where he's been. He's coached Newton for 2 years and seen him practice every day. He obviously thinks Newton can play at the SEC level. I'm gonna go with Mullen's judgment on this.

Same kind of recruiting circus, promised the starting job when he gets here, etc

Just because one random player almost ten years ago who was promised a starting job didn't work out, it doesn't mean we should never, ever do it again.

This thread has almost every pet peeve of mine in it. All it's missing is someone saying that as long as they're Christian, they don't care how good they are as a football player and then rock a verse out of context.

This is the thread from hell.
