schools like ou assume that if they offer, the player is theirs - if the player does not come, they just didn't want him or someone paid him. is it too difficult to acknowledge that Mullen bagged him once already, and coached him for two years, and that the kid was ringing a cowbell and dry humping mullen after the egg bowl?

...would be the appropriate comparisons for us to make. Of course, Smith's NFL career hasn't been great & we don't know about Tebow, but they played under Mullen. Madkin & Bond are 2 & 4 (maybe 5) coaching changes away. Heupel, Bradford, & White all played under Stoops's regime.</p>

Just because one random player almost ten years ago who was promised a starting job didn't work out, it doesn't mean we should never, ever do it again.

This thread has almost every pet peeve of mine in it. All it's missing is someone saying that as long as they're Christian, they don't care how good they are as a football player and then rock a verse out of context.

This is the thread from hell.

Revelation 3.20, "Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you, and you with me."

That's right Cam! Our fine upstanding coach is knocking at the door! I know that you are a good young Christian man, Cam, and will make the right decision! Those heathens at Oklahoma will lead you down the path of sin -- full of gambling, drinking, and dancing! Come to Mississippi State, home of the pure! It won't matter if you are good at football, as long as you are good with the Lord!!!!!11!!!1!1one!!1

There, now this thread is complete.....

I've heard the same thing multiple times about him buying a stolen one and not stealing it himself.

Other than the first half of his junior year.. towards the end of that year and during his senior year he was very solid.

Just because one random player almost ten years ago just about every player at every school who was promised a starting job didn't work out, it doesn't mean we shouldn't never, ever do it again.
You should never promise a guy a starting spot at a big position like QB, RB, etc. Kickers, sure, what the heck.

When you promise a guy the job, he's apt to lack motivation leading up to spring/fall (whichever is the arrival semseter) and then underperform to the point where he really shouldn't win the job. The other guys on the team see this, it creates discontent, and it's all down hill from there.

Now, there are ways to accomplish the same goal with a recruit without ever having to promise him anything. You tell him that he'll have to earn it, but you know that he's a very talented guy. You tell the guy you know he's got experience/charisma/whatever and that hard work get him where he wants to go. Tickle his ears a little bit about himself, basically saying that if he takes care of business you have faith that he CAN win the job, but you never actually say the job is his. This covers you in the event that the player isn't all he's cracked up to be and you have to go another direction.
