Adding to the cat/dog thing, our previous dog (may she RIP) was a sweetheart in so many ways, but she wouldn't play fetch to save her soul. If I threw a ball, she wanted to keep it. She did like playing tug, but her teeth were in pretty bad shape and they'd bleed, so that wasn't a good option. Our current dog is a terrier mix and loves playing fetch and tug, and she loves to give the squirrels, chipmunks, and rabbits in our backyard a run for their money. She's going to be 3 years old this spring and she has the spirit and energy of youth, but she loves to cuddle and take a nap with you. She's wonderful. Our son's girlfriend conned him into adopting a cat which has become my wife's cat. Can't really play with the cat or pet her as she devolves into scratching and "play biting."
