More Recognition for a Jackson Restaurant

The newly reopened Mayflower made the NYT's list of the 50 best restaurants in the country. This is the second Jackson restaurant to make this list in the last few years, after Elvie's. Both are run by chef Hunter Evans.

A number of states have no restaurants on the list. Jackson continues to punch above it's weight food wise.

Has anyone been to the revamped Mayflower yet? I don't get to Jackson as much as I used to, but its on my bucket list.

I've gotten lunch a few times recently because it's walkable from my office. Haven't had the dinner menu yet.

They definitely do the basics right. Fried chicken sandwich with onion rings and comeback is my new go to. It could be two meals for me.

Shrimp poboy is really good too. They use Gambino's bread.

God bless them for putting the effort in and that is great recognition. I just hope Cap Police does a good enough job that the perception of downtown improves and they can do the dinner business they deserve to do.

What's really interesting about downtown (really just JXN in general) currently is the explosion of black-owned restaurants. A lot of black chefs really jumping out there opening nice spots with Johnny T’s leading the way. They made national press for catering Travis Hunter’s wedding.

Hen & Egg by Chef Nick Wallace in the old Sun N Sand is really good too.

I’ve had lunch there. It’s good. The renovations inside look nice as well. The lunch crowd seems to be good. Hopefully they are drawing a decent crowd at night.

Been there several times since reopening (for lunch), it’s ok, nothing worth going out of your way for. Lunch tastes pretty much the same as under the former owner. It’s much cleaner though and no more completing an obstacle course if you need to use the restroom. Their cumbak is still next level though, much better than anywhere else.

The lunch crowd seems to have died off some. I don’t know about dinner as i attempt to make it across the Pearl prior to 5pm (as Kim Wade says, that’s when the gun and knife show starts in Jxn).

I had a meeting downtown Jackson yesterday. I've never spent much time there. Once for volleyball at the new convention center. Anyways ....

I had lunch at the Mayflower. It was great. Food good and service good. The catfish was a thick filet but light and fluffy. Turnip greens were delicious. It was nice to have a sit down lunch in a local establishment.

I'll add too. I had some time to kill. So I walked off my lunch around the new capital to the Gov mansion to the old capital and back to first Baptist. That area of Jackson is well maintained. Good for the state and Jackson.

The fed building and fed courthouse is way nicer than what we have in Memphis too.

Somewhat related. We’re in Fairhope Alabama for a few days and trying out some new places. Ate at Gambinos Italian , good food , huge portions, and it been there since 1975 so they must be doing something right. Tried Kingfisher yesterday for lunch. Been open about a year. Great food. Most impressive meal I’ve had in Baldwin county Al in a while. I’ll be back because I saw multiple things on the menu that I wanted to try. Reasonable prices too. Cajun food primarily but I’d drive over from the beach for it.

Honestly the people who think dowtown is dangerous don’t go there much. You don’t have a large safe radius in a couple of directions but I have no fear of being downtown during normal waking hours.

Interesting. I do t recall what days I’ve gone on but lunch has been packed every time. Had people out the door one time. Have not been at night.

I’ve worked down there for years with no incidents. There are a few homeless people that you can just tell are crazy…. Like stand in the road and try to hit your car crazy… but you learn those guys pretty quick and can avoid them.

Yep. Yelling at the sky. I’ve worked for a long time with homeless so they don’t “scare” me. I probably am too comfortable around them and need a little healthy fear. I can certainly understand that if you don’t have that familiarity that could be a big turnoff. I can tell you for sure that my attitude before I started that work was 180 from what it is now.

I used to live in the house that is now Elvies, it was a rental back in 1999. Good times there until my roommate got robbed in our yard. I also saw a neighbor car getting broken into around 6am one day. Then we figured we should move. Really glad they have a good restaurant there now though, I gotta get there one day!

Worked downtown for 25 years. The last 5-10 it really stared getting worse. There was a woman raped in the parking lot across the street (they kept that one quiet). Came to work one day to a bullet hole in a coworkers window. And a massive police chase that ended in the parking lot behind us where we heard several shots fired. Left 4 years ago & within a month there was a gunfight at one of the roundabouts in Capitol St at lunchtime on a work day. So yeah, downtown Jackson isn’t exactly the safest place to work.

I've worked DT since 1995. First let's define DT, roughly it's boarders are Jefferson St to South St to Mill Street to High St (these don't necessary all connect but you get the idea - basically a half mile of the governor's mansion in any direction). DT is not unsafe at all. A few crazy homeless guys, my favorite is the one who wears the cape, but he's hit or miss, haven't seen him in a while. There's an older gentleman with a gray beard who's 100% harmless. About one month ago at 0600, I did the encounter the crazy mentioned above who stands in the middle of the road trying to hit cars, it was at the intersection of Pearl and West.

I've never had a problem in over 30 years, I've parked all over DT and never had a break in (I drive older vehicles and leave nothing in view) and I'm gone before 5pm 99% of the time. Never had what I consider a dangerous encounter (unless you count the incident above), but I do keep my head on a swivel.

I don't recall a "shoot out" at any of the three roundabouts on Capitol (one in front of the Fed Bldg, one in front of the Region's Bldg - I believe that's what it is called now - and one in front off the governor's mansion).

There were many more car break ins/thefts in the 90s, but there were a lot more cars and people DT then (more opportunities). I'm not DT at night or on the weekends, but I know there's been issues at the "Daiquiri" Shops and there's often shootings in association with the St. Paddy's parade.

the police chase that ended with gunfire was the parking garage at Amite & President. The rape was just off of Smith Park. All were during working goes except the raid was as the woman was walking to her car after work.

I'd certainly caution anyone to be careful around smith park, I don't drive by there often, but at one time a lot of homeless hung out there. I believe one of the "do gooder" churches feeds the homeless there on weekends (which is the dumbest thing in the world).

Capitol Police have done a good job, but I'm still against using State funds to increase their patrol area to residential neighbors.

I suspect things are a bit better with Capitol Police & new mayor. But I haven’t been back & I ain’t going back.

Ain't much reason to come DT unless you work there. To me, the Mayflower is mid (admittedly not a foodie though), so no reason to come just to eat there.

I used to hang out with homeless people in Jackson both to try to be helpful and because I was curious, and I went to Smith Park once with a former drug dealer who’d go there to hand out cigarettes. Most of the people screaming at the sky are high
