The story I heard was the referee tried to talk him out of it and asked the player, “Are you sure you want to kick? You sure you aren’t intending to defer?” And the player confirmed that they in fact wanted to kick. The Florida guy definitely screwed up. But the ref tried to give him a chance to correct the mistake.Florida's captains simply screwed the election up when they won the coin toss. Instead of deferring their choice to the second half, they just said that they "wanted to kick". So State got the ball to open the game, plus the option to kick or receive to start the second.
