As far as The Beatles go, I'll take 1965 thru 1969 and you can have the rest.
I agree. I see the later Beatles almost as a different band, but you have to give them credit for the early work.

My vote for most overrated is any of the contemporary country genre. The whole thing is more plastic and fake than a nickelodeon boy band.

C'mon, man. 'Just Breathe' nearly made me cry first time I heard it.

PJ is one of my all time favorites. Watching the video you linked led me to this one. Maybe you've already seen it, but I was fascinated by it. It's basically a gig at a local festival put on by a radio station, 4 days before the release of Ten. These people had no idea

Pearl Jam - like Nirvana, one decent album but their whole "we don't wanna be famous but watch us on MTV" was quite phony. Plus they couldn't hold Alice N Chains' jock with both hands.

Any new country. It's one continuous song written by the same person and most modern country is geared to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

David Bowie - is it too early? Dude had a few good songs but I can't believe he sold 100 million records. Not to mention he was a complete weirdo that made Poison look like the Hell's Angels.

for me it's kanye west

it's like he's punked the entire world into regarding him as a genius artist by sheer force of his own profound self-absorption

and i hate what his influence has wrought across the board, though in terms of lyrical content i think tupac and then eminem started clearing the path for drake-style singer-songwriter-level navel-gazing

This is incredible! Thanks.

Wow, at the 28 minute mark, Eddie dedicates the song "Deep" to Freddie Mercury. This was August and Freddie died in late November. Pretty cool.

KISS. Easily. It's hard to listen to something like "Rubber Soul" or "Highway 61 Revisited" and then take something like this seriously:

They were a goofy, comic book created, barely talented kid's band. Gene's real talents consist of falling in love with the mirror, shamelessly slapping the KISS logo on lighters and caskets, and sticking out his tongue to attract witless groupies with low self-esteem.

"I wanna rock and roll all night...and party everyday." Do ya? How cute.

Kurt Cobain / Nirvana - Kurt is mostly notable for having blown his brains out and joining the 27 club. They had one decent album. If he was still alive he'd be a footnote to the story of the Seattle grunge movement. But he's dead and most people think is WAS the Seattle grunge movement.

GnR - A couple good songs, I'll grant you. But soooo overrated as a band. And they should be docked major points for having issued the worst cover song in the history of cover songs when they butchered the hell out of Bob Dylan's "Knockin On Heaven's Door".

KISS - The first "Rock band" to appeal to pre-teens. Hundreds of flash pots and 4 dudes in halloween costumes. Really? Good lord! Just awful!
Totally agree about kiss. Seen them at freedom hall, and was totally un impressed. They're basically a garage band in make up

The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, Johnny Cash, The Rolling Stones, Rush, Pink Floyd, The Who, Michael Jackson, Patsy Cline.....they are all terribly overrated. Bunch of crap on vinyl if you ask me.

Just a comment about Aerosmith -- they produced some pretty good music from about 1973 to about 1977

then they should have folded - they really never were the same band at ALL and outlived their usefulness after "Draw the Line"

Rock and Roll / Pop Music (this includes rap) in general is overrated
That's the nature of the business that it's become
Also, it used to be that this type of music was at least perceived to be 'counter cultural" or somehow changing the world

It isn't and it doesn't ---- the pop music (Rock, country, rap etc) culture of this country is such that the music mostly supports a swim with the steam mentality --- there's nothing counter cultural about any of it ….. and there's no changing the world either

it's ALL F'ing overrated

Just because the Beatles isn't your cup of tea doesn't mean they are overrated. They are the most influential band like ever and have a mountain worth of work that range from good to God-like. I could see how someone could not like their pop early stuff (I love it all) but their progression from that to what they were in the studio is outstanding. So that is just a dumb dumb take.

For example I'm not a Rolling Stones fan really. I like a few of their songs but I don't own any albums and such. Same with U2 or the Who. Not quite my cup of tea. But I appreciate their place in music history and would never ever be dumb enough to call those bands overrated.

i only like the beatles early pop stuff, actually. that and the grittier motown (martha reeves, jr walker, some four tops, etc) is really about the only top 40 stuff i can stand

there are so many beatles covers i prefer to the originals, largely because i can't stand lennon (self-righteous douche fraud) or mccartney (corny) or the sound of their voices. but the reason the covers work so well is that the two of them had a rare gift for melody and composition

My favorite story regarding KISS.

So in 1979 my brother and I went to Riverfront Coliseum (now US Bank Arena) in downtown Cincinnati to see the band Judas Priest. In the oddest pairing of bands EVER, Priest was the opening act for the headliners KISS. We walk in before the show starts and half the arena is little kids with makeup on their faces, and parents that brought their little ***** to see KISS.

Directly in front of my brother and I was two kids probably 10 and 12, mom, dad, and grandpa. As soon as the lights go down and Judas Priest take the stage I load a bowl and I'm sharing it with my brother. I soon notice that grandpa is looking back at me all pissed. If looks could kill...!

Judas Priest was awesome. As soon as KISS started I noticed cotton candy vendors working the aisles. Swear to gawd. Cotton candy at a concert. Middle of third KISS song we left. They were horrible. But of course most of the middle school kiddies were having a great time with their cotton candy and crappy music.

No point in staying. Tipton and Downing best 1-2 guitar act in history - any form of rock music. in '79 and '80 timeframe I was thoroughly addicted to "Hell Bent for Leather" (released previously as "Killing Machine" in the UK). In my opinion, the best of many great "Priestly" works. What a great time to have seen them live. Good for you.

It is understandable that so many Beatles fans still to this day cannot understand how the Beatles re-invented themselves, yet so tragic as it is through this process that they gave so much of their best work and, through the process, taught the blossoming musical world so much about itself. You cannot be faulted for your comments about John Lennon. His political leanings alone . . . And the creative differences between him and Paul that were revealed through the re-invention.

One of my favorite tid-bits of Beatles facts centers on the songwriting prowess of George Harrison. While all of the great hits in "the day" were written by either John or Paul it has since become George Harrison's "Here Comes the Sun" that is the most downloaded (internet age) of all Beatles songs. And his song "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" remains available for old codgers in the states to sit around with their box of strings and create something beautiful like this:

AIC. Basically a cockrock glam band that started wearing flannel and not washing their when it became the cool thing to do.

This is not possible. I have it on good authority in this very thread that Pearl Jam could not hold this band's glitter-covered jock. No word on their makeup case, though.
How positively embarrassing.

Who cares what they started as? Pantera was a glam band also. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the dorks in Pearl Jam wore spandex and eye liner in the 80's. Bottom line, they ended up kicking Pearl Jam and Nirvana in their manginas.

The Who- Think people say they like them just because they seem cool.
Led Zeppelin- I know they are fun to listen but Jimmy Page is not the greatest guitarist ever BS, fun but the music does not hold up as well as it ages, just doesn't. Page is the third best guitarist in the Yardbirds.
Peter Frampton- Enough said
Blake Shelton and all new country acts, Garth and all rolled into one.
Aeorosmith is awful.
Bon Jovi is awful
Def Leopard is awful
Foreigner and Styx are awful

Beatles regardless if you like them or not, they were amazing studio and these were great songs and great production
