The appeal of Frampton, for rock fans, and especially guitarists, lies in the guitar playing.I never really got the appeal of Peter Frampton. Sure, he's a good guitar player, but songs like Baby I love your way and Show me the way are just terrible to me. I love Journey but could see why some don't.
I'm like that with Led Zepplin. Great songs but I don't care for Plant's voice.I’m gonna come clean and admit that I actually LIKE The Doors, with one caveat; I like them despite Morrison. Manzarek and Krieger wrote some pretty good music. It’s just too bad that insufferable prick with his over-inflated ego had to be a part of it.

Slightly OT... but, if you really want a deep dive into some famous songs, and what makes them great, Rick Beato does a phenomenal job of iso'ing tracks and showing you the stuff you never knew.
Here's one of my favorites by the genius of Tom Scholz, Bradley Delp, and Boston:
Oh, and of course Frampton is one the list (Do You Feel @ #100).
It’s just too bad that insufferable prick with his over-inflated ego had to be a part of it.
Even for a guy like me who has played in bands since '87, knows theory, etc... his segments are really interesting.Love me some Rick Beato. Dude does a phenomenal job of explaining musical concepts for tone-death idiots like myself.
Agree on Frampton's guitar playing which definitely exhibits a unique style and feel. However, FCA album is one of the leading candidates for 'catching lightning in a bottle'. Never really had any hits (solo) before or after. Always wondered if the voicebox gadget was responsible for many casual fans liking the album. Part of some good groups and contributed as a sideman on some good music but all the success and critical acclaim for one gigantic album seems overblown. He was a really good guitar player before and after that album but made almost no dent commercially. The appeal of Frampton, for rock fans, and especially guitarists, lies in the guitar playing.
Frampton Comes Alive has it all: pop (Show Me the Way), guitar rock (Do You Feel), funk (Doobie Wah)... even his version of Jumpin Jack Flash is interesting.
As to the first half of your post... everything you said is true... but does that make the album (or Frampton) "overrated"? I vote "no". "Overrated", to me anyway, implies lack of talent (see: Nirvana).Agree on Frampton's guitar playing which definitely exhibits a unique style and feel. However, FCA album is one of the leading candidates for 'catching lightning in a bottle'. Never really had any hits (solo) before or after. Just one person's opinion, of course.
As to overrated, Layla is a perfect example as someone else pointed out. The main part of the song is about 3 minutes (maybe) and then a repetitive outro that goes on for much longer than the main part of the song. Not sure at all that the outro adds ANYTHING to the song other than giving Duane Allman a structure upon which to play some interesting slide licks. But, does it enhance the song overall? I certainly don't think so. Would Layla be a better song if it only had maybe a couple of times through the outro? My vote would be 'yes'. See 'Hey Jude' for another example.
Only two of the all time greats! My number one most overrated classic rock song is Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven”.
A very close second is The Eagles’ “ Hotel California”.
Both make me cringe. Not sure how they so much air play back in the day.
I never cared for Frampton, but Bob Seger is one of the all time greats. One of the best song writers to ever live and a great voice. I also like ZZ. Tom Petty was awesome. One of my favorite songs of all time? Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd. Best guitar ever! David Gilmour 4ever!Agree 100% and I am in my 60s, listen to 2/3 stuff made in the last 20 years, maybe 3/4, I make a habit of writing down new stuff I hear on WUKY or XM Radio and then loading into Spotify. Even when I listen to the old classic rock acts, I tend to pick their lesser known songs
As previously stated above, most of these songs were/are actually great, they have just been overplayed to the zillionth degree in the last 30 years, which is why I have not listened to WKQQ (classic rock station since its very inception) in probably 20 years or more.
I will weigh in on some of the classic acts, for example, I never understood how ZZ Top, Bob Seger, or Peter Frampton ever got popular to begin with, much less have their old music still plaguing the airwaves decades later. Frampton Comes Alive drove me right up the wall in high school and has not aged well. (Naturally, I fully expect one of the next 3 posts to tell me Frampton is a musical genius)
BTW, I can see you watching all his "What Makes a Song Great" episodes of the Springsteen songs lol.
I bet that is a short documentary.

Don't encourage him man.Honestly, this thread hasn't really begun until we get @_Mav_ 's take on Bruce Springstein..
Los Lobos has been around since the 80's.

For a song that I wish classic radio would forget exists, I present the worst song ever.
Is that the Yiddish Bruce Springsteen? Oy vey...Honestly, this thread hasn't really begun until we get @_Mav_ 's take on Bruce Springstein..
Obviously never dated one... or, in my case, married one.Getting back to the OP...
I'll go with "Brown Eyed Girl".
Van is awesome... but a monkey coulda written this. Nothing interesting about it at all.
Sometimes you see a post and you wonder what the handicap is? Were they born with a cleft eyeball or maybe their ears are where their big toes were supposed to be? Maybe instead of brain cells they have little gelatinous balls of peanut butter fat gobbed up into their synapses and instead of hearing it just shocks their brain like dry ice margaritas?Anything by Bruce Springsteen. Total talentless hack.

Did you ever hear about the time he dressed up as Santa for the kids at an elementary school in Asbury Park, N.J.? So Bruce shows up and says in a low, gruff voice, "Hey kids, I've got some goodies for ya," and he reaches in his sack and pulls out a bunch of scrap iron and cigarettes. Bruce is a sonofabitch but damned if those kids didn't grow up to be hard-working, responsible adults.*Bruce can make you human, again.
Somewhere a pony caught on fire and ran through a field burning as it cried for help and wondered why you were such a mean person to post that. I seriously sometimes wonder why you hate America so much.Did you ever hear about the time he dressed up as Santa for the kids at an elementary school in Asbury Park, N.J.? *yes, of course this is a Bill Brasky tale
Bruce is not America, no matter how many times he's wrapped himself in the flag for profit and faux-earnestly grunted out "Born In The USA."I seriously sometimes wonder why you hate America so much.

Posts like that are why the terrorists win. You just recruited hundreds if not thousands for them. When your post winds up pinned to a foxhole sandbag in the Afghani mountainside maybe you'll weep but then again maybe you won't.Bruce is not America, no matter how many times he's wrapped himself in the flag for profit and faux-earnestly grunted out "Born In The USA."
Bruce is a liberal Commie so he's the one helping the terrorists.Posts like that are why the terrorists win. You just recruited hundreds if not thousands for them. When your post winds up pinned to a foxhole sandbag in the Afghani mountainside maybe you'll weep but then again maybe you won't.
Ah, ok... I get it now. Sorry, I must be dense. This is a domestic political thing for the political nuts that see everything in their lives through what political group they see themselves as "fighting" for. Even what music they listen to. NO DAMN JANE FONDA MOVIES FOR ME! I get it now.Bruce is a liberal Commie so he's the one helping the terrorists.
He is a fraud (never worked a blue collar job in his life); another common trait of a liberal Commie.
Nothing but a media creation.
It's not political: he is simply a FRAUD. Sure, his politics are misguided and wrong... but at the end of the day... his music, his whole career in fact, are all based on FRAUD. Impossible to respect him as an artist.Ah, ok... I get it now. Sorry, I must be dense. This is a political thing for the political nuts that see everything in their lives through what political group they see themselves as "fighting" for.
Boy I feel stupid. Never occurred to me. I'm flushed with embarrassment over my naivete.
