Even though my school isn't in the conference anymore, I still have vested interest in the Buncombe County schools ( I also work over there and know many of the coaches) and want to continue these. I don't see any blowouts week 1! Should be some great games.

East Rutherford @ Asheville

Asheville lost a lot of their skill players but return a very solid ( and huge) OL and have some young players who will be good. East Rutherford will be a tough early test and can score tons of points.

East Rutherford 41
Asheville 35

Enka @ North Henderson

Enka will be at or near the bottom of the conference again. North should win but it might be close.

North Henderson 28
Enka 20

Erwin @ West Henderson

Probably the best game in WNC week 1. Erwin still has a stud QB and a very good WR corps. Their OL is starting over but if they can hold up and their defense can be a little better they can win the conference again. West Henderson is supposed to be quite good again and this should be a shootout.

Erwin 41
West Henderson 35

North Buncombe @ Cherokee

North returns just about everyone and has a good RB. This would be a big win to pick up early on.

North Buncombe 28
Cherokee 21

Reynolds @ Brevard

If Erwin and WH isn't the game of the week, this is. Brevard is very good and Reynolds should be Reynolds but has some questions..I have heard their transfer QB has really struggled to get the ball downfield and the Rockets may have to rely on their running game, defense and special teams (sound familiar?)

Reynolds 27
Brevard 21

Hunter Huss @ Roberson

Roberson lost quite a bit from last year and could struggle some with a very tough schedule (they play Watauga, South Point, and Freedom.. I don't know much about Huss but they have speed and athletes (not much defense) and this could be a barnburner.

Glad to be back on the board. Last season was awesome as a Erwin fan until we ran in to a "8A" team on a mission! The fact that WC beat down Dudley and Hickory after they destroyed us was a little justifying but no excuse for how we played that night. I'm still very proud of what my Warriors accomplished. With that said here are my thoughts on the conference this season.

ACR. Still the team to beat based on history. Somehow they are still getting transfers weeks before the season starts so look for them to be really good as usual.

Asheville. Always a threat to win the conference. They have the athletes to compete with any team. They could go undefeated or lose 5 games. Who knows.

Erwin. My Warriors lost a ton of talent including the entire offensive line. They are small and numbers are pretty low. That being said they have the best qb and wr in WNC. They are very quick on offense and surprisingly defense too. They have a brutal early season schedule so we will see.

TCR. Honestly I don't know much about this team but they are always a threat with their athletes and money. I look for them to be 4th in the conference.

Enka. I believe they will be improved but they still will not compete with the top 3/4 teams in the conference. They should get a few wins.

NB. I think this will be the most improved team in the conference. They have a solid rb and they are hungry for a win. They will not beat the top teams but they could upset a few teams early this season.

Good to see you back. I had to create a new account so I lost 20 years of posts on here. I kept the name as close as I could.

Some surprising finals

West Henderson 27
Erwin 21

Brevard 31
Reynolds 7

Cherokee 20
North Buncombe 7

North Henderson 35
Enka 7

Asheville 40
East Rutherford 36
I'm not really surprised by these scores. As far as the Brevard/ Reynolds game the size of victory is a little surprising but Brevard in my opinion is the best team in the mountains this year. With regards to asheville, even though they've been down by their standards for a few years they are still Asheville and in any normal year beating East Rutherford wouldn't be a big deal for them. I'm not really surprised about the Erwin game either because West Henderson is very good and when Erwin lost their star player in the first quarter you could tell it really threw them off but there is still no excuses. The younger kids need to step up when he goes out and I think they did a pretty good job but that was a tough position to be in on the road

I heard Reynolds may struggle on offense and that seems to be true. Did your WR get hurt? Hes a stud.

Yes he did get hurt in the first quarter. He was torching West Henderson, they had no answer for him before he got hurt so it was really disappointing. I hope he's back this week.

You will need him, Mountain Heritage is still very good. Should be another close game

He didn’t torch West. They actually defended him very well. He had 3 catches for 24 yards in 2 quarters, according to the paper and I remember only one of those catches going for more than 10 yards.

What shock me is how well Asheville played and responded each time ER took the lead. As young as they are, this team is good and will be really good years to come.

Actually those three catches were in the first quarter. He never stepped foot on the field in the second quarter. When I say torch I mean he was double covered and he made it look easy so I have no doubt he would have had a big game had he played the rest. Like I said before I'm not taking anything away from West Henderson. They are a very good team. I'm just saying losing arguably the best offensive and defensive player in wnc is going to affect any team. Erwin had a chance to win at the end but it didn't go their way. That's the way it goes!

Actually he did if you watch Hudl. But you obviously didn’t. He got hurt in the 2nd, that’s 100% fact.

The truth about the game is this:

He’s a phenomenal player but he didn’t torch anyone.

West was physically dominant in both sides of the ball.

He got hurt because the run defense was so bad he had to step up multiple times on one of the best RB’s in all of WNC and ended up paying for it. If you can’t protect him on the defensive side of the ball, he can’t help you on offense.

You're absolutely right. You guys were definitely so dominant that Erwin was leading the game late in the fourth quarter. Like I said before you might be the best team in Western North Carolina. You may want to learn a little bit of humility though!

#1: Neither of these teams are my team. I’m a neutral fan, giving you neutral observations after watching online. No rose lenses here.

#2: West was more physical, especially in the first half. It doesn’t mean the scoreboard will always reflect that but that’s the observations of an old coach. The amount of times #2 had to stop a run play in the 2nd and 3rd levels from his safety position, were numerous, and those collisions were big.

#3: You had the lead because West muffed a punt inside their own 20 and then had an unlucky tip in the secondary that was caught in the end zone. That’s part of the game but I trust my eyes and West looked better in every phase except special teams.

Fair enough. So who's your team?

We just flat out got our butts handed to us, no doubt Brevard was the better team from opening kick til the final horn, we got a ways to go in my opinion. Next week won’t be any easier as we travel to Maiden.

Brevard looked better than last years team to me. Reynolds gonna have to figure out QB issues he seemed to look one receiver not open he take of running Always seemed to be right being a lefty I would figure you would want to go left easier to throw couple times he went left he hit couple good plays.

Reynolds is Reynolds. One game will not change that. They could beat any team in WNC on any given night.

No Reynolds will be fine one other note was probably the smallest bench I've ever seen for them numbers wise. Worries for brevard would be injuries a lot of guys play both ways and punter he probably didn't average 20 yards last night some of that was trying to kick away from 2 but still not good.

Keep playing like you have been and you won't need to worry about the punter. Lol

I was surprised when the Asheville player transferred to Reynolds after I heard the Reynolds QB had trouble making passes more than 5 yards past the los. If you are a WR or skill player that wants more opportunities why not go to a pass happy offense like Erwin with a proven QB?

I had that thought as well. Apparently these kids can just bounce around Buncombe County at will, so maybe we can get him mid season over at Erwin. Haha
