Mountaineers Set for Several Rifle Championships
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (June 24, 2015) – Current members of the West Virginia University rifle team, as well as recent graduates and incoming freshmen, will compete at two championships over the next week.
Seniors Garrett Spurgeon and Patrick Sunderman and junior Jean-Pierre Lucas, as well as 2015 graduate Thomas Kyanko, incoming freshman Virginia Thrasher and graduate assistant Dan Hermsmeier, will shoot at the 2015 USA Shooting National Championships for Rifle/Pistol, June 24-July 1, at the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit in Fort Benning, Georgia.
Competitors at the national championships will be shooting for several prizes, including National Team selections, Performance Standard Scores (PSS) and selection to the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup in Gabala, Azerbaijan.
Competition opens Thursday with the women’s 10m air rifle and the men’s 50m 3 positions rifle. The men’s and women’s 50m rifle prone competitions begin on Saturday, June 27, while the men’s 10m air rifle and the women’s 50m 3 positions rifle competitions are set for Monday, June 29, with all rifle events concluding on Tuesday, June 30.
Results will be posted daily at USAshooting.org. A complete recap will be provided at the end of competition.
Additionally, two Mountaineers will travel internationally to compete next week, as sophomore Elizabeth Gratz and incoming freshman William Anti will shoot at the ISSF Junior Cup, set for June 25 – July 2, in Suhl, Germany. The duo is among 20 members of the USA Shooting National Junior Team who will compete for Minimum Qualifying Scores (MQS) for the 2016 Rio Olympics qualifications process. The competition is expected to draw 500 athletes from more than 40 countries.
Both athletes will compete in the 50m rifle prone events on June 27 and the 10m air rifle events on June 29. Gratz will compete in the women’s 50m 3 positions rifle event on June 28, and Anti will compete in the men’s 50m 3 positions rifle competition on June 30.
