Minn was pretty good this year.... This will be a tough game for us to win, as they are also a well coached team. We cant afford the typical boneheaded mistakes if we want to win the Guaranteed Rate Bowl...

Its a decent bowl & opponent to get tho.... Great chance for us to end the season on a high note, but its gonna take consistency & execution to do so!

Knowing that HCNB is not going anywhere, a bowl loss will mean he MUST make staff changes. Best buds Moore, Wright, and Parker should be the first out the door.

Guaranteed Rate Bowl in Phoenix, Arizona once was called the Copper Bowl (the Cactus Bowl was the first choice, but was dropped and then appeared in 2020) before bowls began selling naming rights.

It’s played in Chase Field, a BASEBALL stadium, the home of major league baseball’s Arizona Diamondbacks (as in the dangerous snake). The only other bowl played in a baseball stadium is the Pinstripe Bowl, in legendary Yankee Stadium (imagine, a football game in The House That Ruth Built!).

GRB … grrrr! … matches a Big 12 team against a Big 10 team since 2006.

This season Bowling Green beat Minnesota, 14-10, so maybe WVU can, too. And only beat Miami of Ohio by 5 points. Don’t hold your breath with this WVU team.

So it will be my alma mater, tied for 5th in the Big 12, against the Gophers, tied for 2nd in the Big 10 West division.

Better take your No-Doze. The kickoff starts at 10:15 p.m. Eastern time on December 28, which is a Tuesday!

WVU was there in 1998, losing to Missouri, 34-31, when it was the Insight Bowl but beat Arizona State, 43-42, when it was the Cactus Bowl.

Air Force beat Washington State, 31-21, in the 2019 Cheez-It Bowl. Covid wiped out the 2020 bowl. Not enough teams avoided it to fill out all the bowls.

Played as the Copper Bowl from inception through 1996, it was known as the Insight.com Bowl from 1997 through 2001, then the Insight Bowl from 2002 through 2011, the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl for 2012 and 2013, and the Cactus Bowl for the 2014 through 2017 seasons. In 2018 and 2019, the game was known as the Cheez-It Bowl. In 2020, Guaranteed Rate signed on as the title sponsor of the game, renaming it as the Guaranteed Rate Bowl.

The first Copper Bowl was played at Arizona Stadium in Tucson on the University of Arizona campus.

It changed names so often that they should have a digital sign with lights that can apply the latest name just before kickoff.

Domino's Pizza (1990–1991)
Weiser Lock (1992–1995)
Insight Enterprises (1997–2011)
Buffalo Wild Wings (2012–2013)
TicketCity (2015)
Motel 6 (2016, 2 games)
Kellogg's Cheez-It (2018–2019)
Guaranteed Rate (2020–present)

Its large crowd was 54,247 in the 2011 Insight Bowl when Oklahoma beat Iowa, 31-14. The attendance hasn’t hit 40,000 in the past 6 bowls by whatever names they were called.

Not exactly the Rose Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl or Fiesta Bowl but I’m thrilled that my alma mater will be in ANY bowl game, even the Toilet Bowl.

And you know I’ll be watching and yawning, because of the time, not because of what I see on the field. God, I hope so.

Pretty much the same formula for most teams against most opponents. Exceptions being the truly bad teams like LIU.

The silver lining:

WVU’s Copper Bowl (original name) matchup with Minnesota in Phoenix ranked 29th worst of the 42 bowls. At least that means 13 bowls are considered less meaningful.

WVU Offense
#77 Total Offense 385.1 YPG
#79 Scoring Offense 26.8 PPG
#44 Passing Offense 256.9 YPG
#97 Rushing Offense 128.2

Minnesota Defense
#4 Total Defense 284.4 YPG
#9 Scoring Defense 18.25 PPG
#10 Passing Defense 184.7 YPG
#9 Rushing Defense 100.2 YPG

WVU Defense
#41 Total Defense 349.4 YPG
#50 Scoring Defense 24.33 PPG
#55 Passing Defense 220.1 YPG
#36 Rushing Defense 129.3 YPG

Minnesota Offense
#98 Total Offense 360.2 YPG
#84 Scoring Offense 26.1 PPG
#115 Passing Offense 166.4 YPG
#31 Rushing Offense 193.8

Just from Basic stats this game will come down to if WVU can stop the run. This is two mediocre offensive teams.

Another game of don't turn the ball over or get Doeged and WVU can win.

And those losing to Bowling Green. 4-8 in the MAC, who was beaten by 7-5 Toledo 49-17. Hey, they beat Wisconsin! You can't shine **** guys, We're damn near playing Kansas again in different uniforms. Maybe more like TCU. (Hey, TCU beat Baylor!)

“Doeged” is a coined phrase I started using and several other fans have too. It is true, if we can go through this game, which would be the only game, we have not got Doeged I think we win big.

This means second half scoring replacing Doeged pick sixes or horrible sacks.

I have often wondered if we didn’t get Doeged against MD, TT, VT, KST, OU etc… if we would have won 8 games?

or would give the ball to Greene?

All that counts is how you play when the chips are down. I say that every WVU who shows up at the Copper Bowl shouts "Caddyshack!" every time WVU sacks the QB. That movie's fans and WVU fans will get it.

Minnesota and WVU have a common opponent this season in Maryland.

Here are the comparative scores/results

WVU 24
Maryland 30

Maryland 16
Minnesota 34

So WVU's D gave up two touchdowns more than Minnesota did, and WVU's offense scored a touchdown and a field goal less.

Minnesota is likely going to be a very tough test for WVU.

A logical route for comparison, but that was one of the worst games this year for WVU. The Defense had a couple critical missed assignments / blown coverages, Doege had 2 INT's, Brown lost a fumble, Wright lost a fumble, and that was probably the worst performance of our OL & Def all season.

Its tough to beat anyone when you have 4 TO's, and even with 4 TO's we still kept it a close game. Its safe to say our OL made significant improvements since the first game, and while we will probably still get CShoeD, I doubt(+hope) we dont have 4 TO's.

Either way, I do agree with you, it is gonna be a tough game to win. Minn was a good team this year & well coached. Its def a quality opponent and an opportunity to put a feather in Brown's cap if hes able to win, esp since they had a better record, more experienced roster, and have a quality staff. I would imagine we are definitely the underdog from a points/spread perspective.. Disappointed we couldnt keep Kirk C on staff though, interested in who we find to replace him as an analyst.

Another numbers guy.

Minnesota will be no different than any other team WVU faced this year. Oh and the injury bug had hit Maryland by the time Minnesota played them. They had lost their best offensive player.

You morons that like to compare numbers and games always forget what was and what is. Typical dumbass.

But WVU made those same sort of mistakes throughout the entire season, and over the course of the last three seasons. There's nothing to indicate we won't see more of the same.

MN is favored I believe. Definitely a tough test.

Hopefully Kneel has the guys ready to play. The Gophers D could be better than Okie St's, so Doege is going to have to really show up and not **** the bed. We can win this if we really show up.

Outside some freaky turnovers or obvious chicanery by one or more officials, the more talented and better prepared team will win. Whoever that turns out to be.

I would be extremely surprised if we won given where both programs are in their evolution under each staff. Fleck has built Minny into a serious program that is on the upswing again after 2019 while Neal has not gotten any significant traction other than mildly improving the mess he was left from the previous regime with little reason to expect it will get much better in 2022. Unless Minny has a bunch of players planning to sit or mail the game in, it will be theirs to lose

Life is full of surprises. I just smile when they win and SMH when they lose. Either way I just have another beer. I think one team will win convincingly but I have no idea which. Both teams have looked pretty good and very bad in different games. The opponent seemed to be irrelevant.
