Honestly in the grand scheme of things in college sports that actually matter, the Mullen years and 1998-2000. Baseball does not count. Basketball counts for about 25%.

For football only, it’s gonna be tough to beat 96-00. 2014 was great but the other years around it weren’t exactly amazing.

For basketball I’d say 2000-2004 might have been the best time. Same thing with 1996 as with 2014, really high high but rest of the time not that great.

Actually start at 91.

basketball won the sec in 91.
Jackie hired and winning season for football 91, 92 and 94.
Basketball sweet sixteen in 94-95 season.

with nil. &tate will never see 1990s success again.
The Kang showed us that we could win in this league. The overall program transformation from Rocky to the Kang was beyond night and day. He had a brand, skins on the wall and swagger; and he was our coach. He made the football job somewhat attractive again. We still managed to screw it up and go backwards.

I graduated high school in 2000. Coming off of that I thought it was going to be on! We fell off quickly. 2004 basketball was good, I will say that.

‘00-‘04 were my years, and the Hump was electric back in those days. I can still remember getting there an hour early to sit in the courtside gray seats one night, and a student worker from the recruiting office spent a half hour telling me all about the studs that JWS was about to land. Norwood, Darren Williams, Byrdsong, and such…

Students who were there between 96 and 00 got to storm the field and tear down goalposts three times. Witnessed a final four. Won the SEC West. Peach Bowl. Snow Bowl. Massive stadium renovation. Two trips to Omaha. Fun years.

The 1990s were all pretty good. Sherrill started in '91, Final Four in '96, Good baseball program. Times were much better than normal. I would love for MSU athletics to get back to winning like that.

I was there from the fall of 1991 until the spring of 1998, and yeah.....it was a GREAT time to be at State. I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

College baseball is a niche sport with few fans. It doesn’t even pay its own way HERE.
Baseball definitely counts when you're a student at MSU, and this thread was about what a great time it was to be a student.

I knew nothing about college baseball when I started at State, but became a huge fan while I was there. Now Im just a fair weather fan, and I never post in baseball threads because I dont follow the team that closely. But those 4 Springs were a great time.

I can tell you currently. My daughter's friend group attend many baseball games. They could not care less about basketball. Therefore baseball is a big part of the experience for them.

I enrolled in 1996. It was the best of times. There was nothing like MSU basketball back then.

Going to the Hump for Hoops was something. I remember everyone trying to enroll in Hank Flick's communications class because he was such an icon, particularly in that run.

Separately, my friends and I went to the 1999 Auburn game with a gnarly hangover from some Auburn frat hospitality the night before. We left the game early because we were sure we were done for. When Wyatt won the game, we pulled over on the highway median to celebrate with some other fans on the way to Montgomery. What a time to be alive.

I was a student during the Clark and Palmerio years. Football still outdrew baseball among students by large amount. Basketball did too for all of those years but maybe one. We had one winning football season during that time, and we beat Ole Miss once. We played in one bowl, in Birmingham. Basketball had a couple of mediocre years but never made the postseason. We had a bad baseball season my first year but that got better, obviously. The point remains, it's a niche sport, even among most of the student body.

I was there then too. Of course football outdrew baseball. Baseball was way more popular among the students than basketball, though...albeit basketball stunk while baseball was competitive.

Being the second or third most popular sport at the school hardly fits the definition of "niche", unless you use that to describe anything that captures the interest of less than half the student body.

It's a niche sport nationally. It's probably 4th or 5th at best when it comes to college sports.

Basketball, other than my first year, was decently popular. About even with baseball or better attendance wise among students.
