Our band is freaking pathetic. The southern miss band halftime show was so much better than ours it's not even funny. Our band is like the band off of the move drum line where the band director plays the same old boring crap. Ohio state just had to fire their band director for some scandal but they are one of the best bands in the nation. Hire him please

What is the deal with these threads?
We are an ag and engineering school running a bargain basement music dept and a low-budget marching band. Until that significantly changes from a $$$ and leadership perspective (and it hasn't for decades), what do you expect?

The band is fine. Average for an SEC marching band, and considering how we don't have a music program at MSU (just music education, and even that's only undergrad), that's pretty good.

Meh I'm not a band guy and was never in it. But ours is pretty much one of the worst in the sec. Not the shows they choose or the music, but their marching. They have terrible diagonals which is the how you can tell if people are lined up correctly. They should probably remove any flag tosses as well because they drop them about half the time.
Saw a tidbit on the news the other day where the drum major was complaining about having 4 shows and it being really hard. As far as musical talent and theatrics I completely agree that our band is at a disadvantage and I don't complain about those aspects. It's the things that you can teach a dog such as hitting your marks on the ground where to stand and catching a 17ing flagpole that I find awful.

Every other band in the SEC has those same issues. I don't think it occurs to many of you that you see these others bands that you think are so much better than us a tiny fraction of the time you see ours. Of course it's going to look like ours makes more mistakes when you have far more exposure time to pick them out.
The truth is that our band is fine for what we are, and 90% of the criticisms on here simply reveal that those who issue them have either no perspective or simply don't know what they're talking about.
I'd be happy if they wouldn't play when the DJ plays songs. Or if the DJ wouldn't play songs when the band wants to play. Either way, same gripe.
what do you expect
1. They have to drink from cups that smell like boo boo
2. They had to deal with the stress of the stadium not being complete in time
3. They have to worry nonstop about what uniforms our team might be wearing that day
4. They have to walk to the stadium knowing they don't have the most beautiful campus or the most beautiful girls
5. They have had to sit by and watch Mullen not beat any top 25 teams
6. They have to listen to those God awful commercials on the jumbotron
7. The university has threatened to reseat the band for years and this causes undue anxiety
8. How would you feel if you didn't know if your current provider would have the band playing on the new SEC Network or not?
