The thread about youth sports got me thinking about my own "glory days." Y'all may have already done this but I thought I'd see just how many Six-Packers attended State's Baseball Camps.

I don't remember the years I was there exactly but I remember meeting Polk (a huge deal to 9yr old me) staying in the dorms, more sunflower seeds than should probably be consumed by a human, and one year on a team named The Oompa Loompas.

You better believe Will James was there. Baseball and Basketball camps every single summer.

Went back when I was about 15. Hank Thoms was on my "team".

Polk came by when I was in the outfield and asked if I liked Will Clark - I was wearing my Giants hat.

I remember doing a lot of walking from one place to the next.

Thread hijack - How many went to Lenny Dykstra's Baseball Camp?

At the NE Courthouse and Smith Wills, back in the day. Will Clark's autograph line was about twice as long as Dykstra's. I remember getting somewhat yelled at by Steve Lyons, because I wasn't exactly paying attention to him...

/I never made MSU camp, but it would've probably been the best thing ever as a kid.

Yeah I went. The year was '99. I actually had a Dr. appointment to see sports medicine guru, Felix H "Buddy" Savoie, III on a Friday morning of the weekend hitters/pitchers camp. MRI on the right elbow was scheduled. I parlayed the two. No turning back. I made it to the camp, participated, had a great showing....hit 86 on the gun as a sophomore/Jr. A week later, I received the news: Tommy John. Worst day of my life. They said I had initially tore it a few years prior. If I can shed light on something here: Father's, If you are serious about your son/daughter ever taking the mound after high school, throw all tennis balls in the garbage. No wall ball, no wuffle ball, no rocks. Monitor your kids innings. Ice and heat appropriately after every bullpen session or outing. STREeeeTCH. At 30, its still not fixed and I feel discomfort EVERYDAY.

Yep, went twice in the late 80s.

The players that I remember working with was Wes Johnson (big left handed pitcher) and another big guy, pitcher out of Florida, real laid back. I want to say his name was Norman??? Sadly I don't remember if that was first or last name. I know he was in the rotation in the late 80s. John Cohen was there but i was never around him. Except one night, (we stayed at Evans as the Athletic dorm was being renovated) I walked into the common area of Evans. My eyes immediately fixed upon the hottest chick I had ever seen in my life (at that time) sitting there. After I came to my senses, I could feel her boyfriend staring at me like we wanted to break me in two.....it was John Cohen.

Anyway, McMahon ran the camp the years I was there but Polk was always lurking around. It was an honor to meet both men. But one day (don't recall my teams name) but I was pitching. Polk strolls out of the dugout and stands behind the catcher to watch me pitch. My first pitch, I beam the batter in the helmet. But after getting the jitters out, I settled down and did ok with Polk watching. However, no scholarship offer. Those camps are an awesome memory though. Getting to meet coaches and players, play at DNF, use the athletic facilities, getting to meet other high school players and coaches. Blister on top of blister from so much batting practice. Just a good, good time and well worth the $100 that I had to pay my dad back.

Also, one thing I learned that summer of my youth. If you put ice in a dishwasher hot glass, the glass will shatter in your hands.

Those were good times. I went to two State camps. My coach for a week at one of them was David "Stitch" Mitchell, the center fielder. He was a really funny guy. I think we stayed in Garner back when it was a dorm when McArthur was being renovated. The other year we stayed in McArthur.

I also went to basketball team camp at State in '95 or so. We pretty much ran that camp beating all of the best teams there and pissed everyone off because we weren't supposed to beat them. Quinton Smith threatened to murder a teammate of mine after we beat Vicksburg. I remember Darryl Wilson being the opposite of his reputation. He was pretty much an arrogant prick to everyone. The other guys were as cool as they could be. Williams and Stans were great.

I never attended MSU camp, but I went to Delta State Pitching Camp one summer. Holy **** that damn Kennison ran our dicks in the dirt. He treated it like an off season pitchers workout program. I was so exhausted from bleachers and ply metrics that I wasn't worth a **** when we finally took the mound.

I learned a lot though. And I saw real quick why DSU is always competitive in baseball.

I turned down a couple offers to try and walk on at DSU. Coach Kennison suggested surgery, Moorhead and six years of college eligibility. I politely declined and took my talents to the intramural fields, brother. And yes, we do not want to play DSU in a 3 game series. I believe many teams over the years had to find out the hard way.

Yep I was there 4 summers in a row with a winter camp sprinkled in.

All pitcher/catcher camps

It was always hot as balls and they walked our asses off.

Talked with Polk several times. He spent alot of his time watching bullpen sessions (obviously)

Remember one year Papelbon spoke to the whole group about the importance of education and listening to your coaches, yadda yadda yadda.

Good times though.

I went to three State camps

I also went to the Millsaps summer camp in Vicksburg so many times, I ended up coaching 2 years. How did all of that instruction work out for me? I'll just say I have to wear rubber boots to work instead of spikes.

I was at baseball camp during the last McMahon season and the first season of Polk II. Brent Lewis and Saunders Ramsey were with my group one year. I had never seen a submarine pitcher in person before, so I thought Ramsey was awesome.

I remember hanging around Maniscalco a little bit, too. He was a jerk.
