MSU in-game crowd shots

My cousin (technically second cousin) is a production crew consultant who works with different networks (primarily SEC Network and Fox Sports) coordinating game day film crews for sporting events. I was talking to her (“Gayle”) at a family event Sunday and she had some interesting insights into the “fan shots” during games. She said they typically have a pre-production meeting the Wednesday or Thursday before the game where they go over camera locations, assignments, etc., and the camera crews get pre-determined “focus shots” that tell them what types of fan shots to focus on during breaks in the action. I’m paraphrasing but she explained it like this:

The goal is to make the viewer feel what it’s like to be at the game. You want each game to feel unique. You don’t want a game at Ann Arbor or UCLA to feel the same as LSU, because that’s not interesting. So the focus shots tell them the types of fans to focus on to give the perceived “feeling” of that school. They’re a series of cues for things to look for. Who decides the “feeling” of a particular school and the resulting focus shots? The production director makes the ultimate decision, but she said the focus shots tend to be the same from one year to the next and result in a positive feedback loop (i.e. people tune into LSU games expecting to see obnoxious drunk cajuns, so the crews show obnoxious drunk cajuns, which reinforces the perception).

So of course, I asked her, what do the MSU focus shots say? “Camouflage, rustics (she said this is a polite industry term for rednecks), cowbells, body paint” were the four most common ones. So every time you see a fan shot of a fat redneck with body paint or a shirtless dude in camo overalls ringing a cowbell, and you wonder why that’s all they ever show, now you know.

Oh and she said OM is “Sorority/fraternity, date night (i.e. couples), family, and chic.” (I may be missing one there but I know “chic” was one because she said it’s code for “attractive/hot.”)

Seriously, just google "Ole Miss football fans" and "Mississippi State Football fans" and see what you get. And FWIW she went to USM. I don't know the solution to this, just thought it was interesting.

I for sure have noticed that, so it makes sense but is always nice to something real to validate my thoughts. And yeah they rarely show any cute MSU ladies, just overweight bland ones. Sigh...
I will say for olemiss, there's often a good "pretentious frat boy being an ***" pic, both in baseball and football games, that always make me laugh. Usually with loud colors that don't match, always with sunglasses, sometimes throwing beer or bad hand gestures.... I'll try to get a screen shot and send to my 1 olemiss friend with the caption of "culture?"

Cool theory. But maybe the "feel" of Mississippi State is fat rustic red neck because that's what at the game.

From personal experience State has some hot women but OM 3x. But nothing to be down about, OM has more hot women than most schools.

Went to State at the same time as Billy.
Fun facts:
- he never wore shoes
- skateboarded without said shoes
- spoke Mandarin
- was an engineering major if I remember right
- studied the Bible at various football games

You don't go to games at all do you. In fact I doubt you are really MSU with that statement.

Same at Alabama.
Usually it’s the front row of band and big hair, big t|+€, dance/baton twirlers, at Auburn it’s the navy jacket and orange dresses people in front row.

There is fat rednecks in camo at Ole Miss games as well.
The ONLY time in my life I've been called redneck to my face was at the SadPad way back when we were doing the victory tour with Cameron Burns and the boys.

The a$$ that told me to take my redneck a$$ back to starkpatch was most definitely more redneck than I have ever been. Heh.

Speak for yourself, buddy. Do you go to the games?
Yep. Season ticket holder at State for years. Wife and kid went to OM. I've been to both places enough to know. State has their country clubbers but is mostly blue collar types. OM has some rednecks but far more country clubbers.

Point is I don't think there is some tv conspiracy. Nothing wrong with being blue collar.

In other news, they have mics on the crowd so they can make the cowbells as loud on TV as they want to.

Yep, I was correct. You aren’t MSU. You might have been once. And as for TV conspiracy…..if the network is connected to ESPN…and the SEC Network and ABC absolutely are, then the Ole Miss bias is institutionalized. Their head of college sports for years was an Ole Miss man. And he hired a LOt of Ole Miss folks.

So now there's nothing wrong with "blue collar", but yesterday you said all State had at our games are... (checks notes) "fat rustic red necks" while OM has country clubbers and 3x the hot women.

Seems like you've let the girls indoctrinate you.

Why can't we just embrace the cow college moniker, trot out all our sweet heifers, and have them ring our bells?

Lets be honest, OM has a much higher sorority population than State and they have a larger population of girls who dress up for games. It's a numbers game. Also the kids who are on the front row (easily found by cameras) of the State student section are just general students, not sorority girls trying to get on TV.

Sure, but let's deal in facts:

1. Every college (esp. the SEC) has plenty of attractive students/fans. Every college (esp. the SEC) also has plenty of "rustics" (lol).

2. The production crew/cameramen decide who they want to focus on.

3. The production crews/cameraman at MSU games overwhelmingly focus on the "rustics," while at other schools the focus is quite the opposite.

Now, if you think this is all happenstance and not the result of a predetermined agenda, we'll have to agree to disagree.

I was in section OO at USM last week. There was a VERY redneck, VERY football illiterate, and VERY loud MSU fan a couple rows down from me that made me embarrassed for our school. If you are on here, you should be ashamed (probably not on here because I don't know that he can read and write). Otherwise, I was surrounded by MSU fans who would not fit the stereotype described by OP's cousin.

Every school has fans like those. They particularly show up at regional road games because they're not the type of fan to drive to starkville or have season tickets.

Kinda like Arkansas - they have the Fayetteville wing of the fanbase and the Little Rock wing of the fanbase - and the Fayetteville wing doesn't care much about the Little Rock wing.

Yeah, all the hot girls flock to North Mississippi. Who's counting anyway? Or is OM discriminating against average to ugly chicks? I've never been to any college campus that wasn't crawling with hot girls. Like being the "Harvard of the South," OM fans make these bogus claims because they are desperate to feel important.

First those adjectives come from the OPs post. I did not say that is "all State had..."
I have another at State now that is 3rd generation Bulldog.

I don't disagree on the focus of TV cameras. If they wanted to, they could find a trio of Chi O's to focus on, but they don't. My point is we have hardcore fans (who do body paint, costumes, etc) who want to be on the front row, and they have sorority girls & their dates.
