But this is yet another situation where an early signing period would be beneficial. If he had tried to sign in August/Sept. and we didn't accept he would have had a clear picture of where he really stood. Instead coaches at all schools can drag kids along until very late in the game and drop them. Just like kids can drop schools.

In this case it sucks for Virgil b/c he was going to be a Dec. enrollee. Now he has very little time to find a spot and get in for the spring.

Our staff actually evaluates players and doesn't just offer stars.

NO WAY to sugarcoat this move ... our staff screwed up. It's not like they woke up yesterday and discovered that if Dak comes back, they will have six QBs on scholarship next year.

I agree that we 'live or die' by our evaluations of players BUT Virgil is having a good year and really pumped about joining 'our' program in a little over a month. Bad timing; really bad timing.

Who cares? Happens every year to tons of players, and every high school coach of those players is now conditioned to rip the school/coach in the paper and/or on twitter. It's as much a part of recruiting as secret commits, Merry Flipmas, and the hat fake. Screw his HS coach for whining about it. And the idiot who posted that we should write the entire state of Texas off because HS coaches out there are tight and won't forget this! Really bro? An SEC school comes calling and no HS in the state of Texas is going to let the kid listen?

Thank you! I feel bad for the kud as I'm sure he is extremely disappointed, but he has good offers and is an early enrollee. He'll be fine. His coach however, setting a great example to all of his players on how to handle adversity. Take to Twitter and run your mouth.

Maybe Virgil is not a good fit for our offense. But Dan should have figured that out before we asked for and accepted his commitment back in May. Nobody is saying Dan can't evaluate players (he is one of the very best). But leaving this kid high and dry just a month before he graduates early and enrolls is NOT GOOD!
Virgil seems like a great kid too plus he was loyal to us since May. He took his commitment seriously and refused to visit or talk with other schools. That's a breath of fresh air in this day & age. Too bad we screwed him!

I'm not sure if you are serious. Are you this naive about this sport? I'm not trying to be mean, but you have to grab a couple of every position because you don't know if some 18 year old kid is going to flake out on you. This happens EVERYWHERE that can pull a decent class together. It is the effect of the cap the NCAA has in place. If Dan had released him in May and then our other commit goes somewhere else we are screwed. We don't have to like it but this is the reality of big time college football. I hate it for the kid, I wish it had not happened, but Dan and his staff know what we need. We all knew we were over committed. Why is this a surprise to anyone?

He doesn't run Mullen's offense in the NFL. The point was, Mullen's offense requires the QB to take on LBs on a regular basis. Alex Smith could do that at Utah, but I'm not so sure he could handle doing that 8 times a year against SEC caliber defenses. He isn't asked to do that in the NFL.
