Very good job by both Crxxm and Mullen recruiting this year. Not only with the top MS players, but also with landing good players from other states.

You have a point but is it a good point?

Look at the top 10 in MS over the past few years. I think its fair to say Top 10 in MS is like Top 100 in Florida or Texas.

I'm using Rivals Rankings bc they have the best database but here we go.

Guys in Green are top quality recruits from MS ranked in the Top 10

2008 Top Ten

<font style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #00ff00">1.) DeAndre Brown - USM - stud
</font>2.) Al Lawrence - Bama - supposed to be a stud
3.) Tig Barksdale - Ole Miss - didn't get in school in 2008
4.) Templeton Hardy - MSU - jury is out
<font style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #00ff00">5.) Charles Mitchell - MSU - Freshman All SEC
</font>6.) Marlon Walls - UT - didn't get in school in 2008
7.) Bo Tillman - USM/Ole Miss/Juco - will he ever get in school?
8.) Rashun Dixon - MSU - didn't get in school
9.) Tobias Smith - MSU - really was he a Top 10??
10.) Bret Jeffcoat - USM - doubt he ever plays

2007
1.) Chris Strong - Ole Miss - flunked out, overweight
2.) Robert Elliott - MSU - overrated and now injured
<font style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #00ff00">3.) D. Sherrod - MSU - Quality OL, would have been great if M. Brown wasn't a DA
</font>4.) C. Ramsey - AU - played at AU bc they needed him badly, injured, career over
5.) Jazzmen Guy - MSU - didn't get in school, Juco
6.) S. Ridley - LSU - warming LSU's bench
7.) J. Frink - Stanford - smart kid, average football player
8.) Lee Chambers - Miami - complete bust, quit team
9.) Jeramie Griffin - AL - warming their bench
10.) Leroy Diggs - Ole Miss / Juco - prob will never get in school

2006

<font style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #00ff00">1.) Allen Walker - Ole Miss - finally living up to hype
</font>2.) D. Odom - LSU - complete thug
3.) Terry Grant - AL - should have gone to State or USM, wasting away at AL
4.) Anthony Summers - MSU - plays for UCA now
<font style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #00ff00">5.) Richard Dickson - STUD
6.) Marcus Tillman - STUD
7.) Mike McCoy - AL - starter
8.) Cordera Eason - Ole Miss - quality starter
9.) Justin Woodall - AL - quality starter
10.) Anthony Dixon - MSU - quality starter
</font>
If you look at this, it proves that MSU and Ole Miss have to reach beyond the state lines if they ever hope to be competitive. Until 2009, no QB's worth crap. Not many OL or DL. It's good for MSU to get these in-state guys but Mullen has to do more than Croom did and expand his horizons.

Mullen not only did a remarkable job of holding the class together after Croom left (something I didn't think he'd do), but he added even more quality recruits. (That was admittedly much easier to admit now than it would have been two weeks ago.)

this may have less to do with talent and more to do with intelligence as evidenced by your research "didnt get into school"</p>

most on your list are freshmens and sophomores, and the class from 3 years ago looks very solid (juniors/RSo.).</p>

it typically takes a few years for a 17 year old to develop into quality college player. Also, which of Elliot's 11 touches that he got (as a redshirt freshman in an injury shortened season behind a terrible line) cinched it for you that he was overrated?</p>

I am curious why all of the UM fans keep saying Elliot was over rated? He was a freshman playing in the SEC and was just starting to make a contribution. Had he made it to the end of the season, who knows, but to say he is a bust at this point is crazy.

they want him to fail because he chose MSU over Ole Miss. (Cue RebelBruiser and the rest of the Ambiguously Gay Legion of Justice)

but he chose not to be a Rebel. Point is if you look at that list and keep the kids that are still in school, you don't have enough to make a team. Quality talent yes, but too much sharing the wealth for one team to survive on MS alone. You have to be able to get quality out of state kids as well....which seems to be overlooked by State folks most of the time.

Just saw where ya'll signed 19 MS kids.....7 WR's and 6 DB's included. How many of these kids do you think will be impact players during their college careers?

but I'll play.

I think that all of the WR's that make it in school will contribute mainly because of the type of offense that we are going to run. We are going to have 3-5 WR's a majority of the time. WR's and DB's in high school are usually pretty good athletes, and I have no problem with Mullen going out and getting as many athletes as he can find and then finding them positions to play. One thing I have noticed is that pretty much all of our players are fast, which as the cliche says, you can't coach speed. That strategy worked for a guy named Jimmy Johnson, who won at least one NC that I can think of off the top of my head and a few Super Bowls.

I'll be happy to give this strategy a try because the classy midget route didn't work out so well for us.

As far as signing Mississippians, I have no problem whatsoever with that either. If we put together an all-Mississippi team that would suit me fine. The guy above listed the top 10 of Mississippi, well what about guys like Mario Haggan and Fred Smoot that weren't top 10? There are guys like that that come out of nowhere. I mean, Mississippi does produce more NFL players per capita, supposedly, so that tells me that there's SOME talent out there. The real problem is that we usually end up splitting it up or it goes out of state, or it's someone that everyone misses like Walter Payton. And personally, I do think it's very important to win your state. I think if you're going to be Mississippi's team, you should have the best Mississippians on your team. It's a perception thing, but that perception is important when you're talking about getting people to support you.

than Mullen, his problem was his gave too many scholarships to his friends kids.

If you get the Top 10 from Mississippi four years in a row, I would be willing to bet that you could put together a pretty solid team, even with all of the busts thrown in.

You also have to factor in the guys that weren't in the top 10 that panned out.

So, if you managed to somehow sign the top 20 players in the state even three years in a row, there would be no excuse for not winning 8-10 games with a competent coach.
