In the spirit of the LS thread below, it got me thinking about MSU special teams in general.
First of all let me say that I'm extremely happy with the offensive and now the defensive staff at MSU. And I'm OK with the special teams unit, but I think that we can do some cool things with ST's- which would be in the spirit of MSU football right now- you know, spread offense, aggressive defense, doing the Dawg Pound Rock. And it would help with our tradition, which is something that we lack compared to some schools in the conference.
I remember when Jackie first came to MSU, he started a group called the "Mad Dawgs" which was basically like Texas A&M's 12th man. The Mad Dawgs were walk-ons on the kick coverage unit. I think they got to wear a patch on their uniform or helmet saying Mad Dawgs. For some reason, during Jackie's tenrue, the Mad Dawg's just kind of went away. I don't really know what happened. But I thought it was kind of cool, even if it was a rip off.
Now, we don't have a whole lot of legendary coaches at MSU- see Charley Shira- but there was a legendary coach at East Mississippi CC named Bull Sullivan. Sports Illustrated ran a big story on him about 25 years ago. He was dubbed "the toughest coach ever." So what? Well, Bull Sullivan actually got a masters from MSU. So, there's the connection.
Where am I going with this? OK- Bull Sullivan's teams had skulls and crossbones on their helmets. It was kind of a trademark and part of his psychological warfare. I think it would be kind of cool to give him a tribute since we do have a connection to him and have some of our special teams guys have a skull and crossbones decal on their helmet or a patch on their uniforms. Nothing gaudy. But something visible that would give people something to talk about. We could call the coverage unit the "Mad Dawgs" or the "Mad BULLdogs". It would be a reward and an honor for the player or players to get it. And yes, we should definately keep the Dawg Pound Rock.
I think it would also kind of reach out to the Community college community, as well as the local area, which would be good for the University as a whole.
Thoughts? opinions? Stick to baseball?
