Solid in pretty much every area except for the special teams, which were atrocious. MA didn't get one punt off because of a bad snap, and had two others partially blocked, and gave up about a 35-yard return on another punt.
The defense was outstanding. Morehead didn't get a single point off all of those punting mistakes. They exploited a size mismatch at one corner a few times in the second half and got a touchdown off that once, but fortunately for the Bears, they were flagged for holding and it was called back. It looked like MA switched off on that in the fourth quarter and made them go after Greg Greene (Donavon's brother) at the corner, which solved the problem. He picked off a pass midway through the fourth after one of the blocked punts.
Coach Adkins was very impressed with Morehead. Told his team that they'd just beat a team that if it were 1A, would have a chance to win the title.

They (Eden Morehead) have over 1,000 kids..i would hope that they would have a shot to win a 1a/aa title...just saying. Nevertheless, great win for the Bears.
The number you are looking at to make that statement is about 4 years old now. The actual enrollment at MHS today hovers around 800. There were 780 students enrolled the last day of school this past year. Twenty-one schools made the 2A playoffs last year with enrollments greater than ours so just want to set the record straight; your enrollment is a lot less than ours but not as much as you might think.
Like many less populated areas in NC our county has experienced quite a bit of economic disparity over the last two decades. Our county school system has studied this issue for a variety of reasons. Future enrollment figures project a downward trend. We actually hope to be re-assigned to 2A after this year. County rival Reidsville would welcome us to their conference as they have a difficult time filling their schedule with non conference and JV opponents.
The above is to take nothing away from Mt Airy. The Granite Bears are a good football team. The Smith kid is as tough as they come. The Greenes are dynamic. The Bears are better up front on both sides in person than they appear on film. A most underrated player is the Shelton kid. Poindexter is going to be very good. We hurt ourselves with turnovers and penalties at critical times but make no mistake, two pretty good teams lined up last night and gave it their all. Like last week, I wish my team could have won but we have battled what I think will be two championship contenders toe to toe. I am proud of our kids.

Edenton Morehead is good (and was a good measuring stick for the Bears) but I’d say that comment is more Coach-speak than actuality.
Great Post. It was actually in 2016 Wikipedia had you guys enrolled with a little over a 1,000 kids. It wasn't a dig at Morehead...more of a dig at the statement Adkins made..its a big 2A school..they should always have a chance to win against smaller schools. Mt.Airy is a great 1aa team.
I'm sure there was some coach-speak involved in that, but the fact Morehead isn't a 1A team is sort of beside the point. The point was that Mount Airy is a 1A team, so the measuring stick they use is how a team would perform in relation to a 1A contender.
Someone else on here threw out the same red herring a few weeks after East Surry lost by one point at Ragsdale last year, saying Ragsdale wasn't any good because Page stomped them. So what? East Surry wasn't going to play Page. If Ragsdale had been a 1A team, they would have been fifth in MaxPreps' final 1A rankings, right behind Cherokee. The point is that it took an awfully good 1A team to compete with them.
That's why smaller schools try to play bigger ones. Hang with the big boys and nothing you see from another team your own size is going to faze you.

Not with Tarboro in the picture. Unfortunately Mt Airy, Murphy, East Surry etc. are all playing for second. I hate it but Tarboro is better than last year and unless Mt Airy or Murphy are small 1A the best they can hope for is a title game appearance.

I dont get all of the defending of what Adkins said. Mt.Airy beat a decent bigger Eden Morehead team. Big ups to Mt.Airy for that. Not many 1a team could do it. Mt.Airy deserves props for that. But for a coach to say that a bigger 2 a team would be a contender in 1a..so what..i will continue to say..they should be...but Morehead is not a contender in the current class that they play in. It's as simple as that. Now reverse it..if the Eden Morehead coach said that Mt.Airy would be a serious contender in 2a/2aa..then that carries waaay more weight..

Tarboro is good very good but when you least expect you can slip up don't put the ring on before the game is played one week at a time for us in the west you do know Edenton holmes might give you a game and Mt Airy may even be 1a like you say but I wouldn't be crowning a champion before the end of season
Success breeds jealousy, Bears beat a pretty good team Friday night. A team that lost to a real good reidsville team. Some say reidsville is a little down but I imagine they will still be playing late November. Everybody seems to want to mention tarboro when the bears are talked about. How bout this , the bears will worry about the tarboro talk if and when they play in week 16. Bears have the hounds on the agenda this week which is always a heated battle , even better it’s in toast and will be standing room only. The hounds will be all and more than the bears want. Always are. After this week it’s off to around 6 weeks of rest and games to work on thingsthen we can talk about the cards. Favorite thing about this team so far is their will to win, everyone wants to see a loss , but they keep on grinding out those wins. What’s the talk gonna be when they get the kinks worked out , when they become the animal they can be and will be for their playoff run. Ole wait , I know what it will be , I’m a genius , I got it figured out already , they will say don’t matter , tarboro is coming from the east , ole my the Vikings are waiting, the same team that was beating the bears down with 5 minutes to go in the 4th , 12 - 0 and then 18 - 7 with about 3 and a half to go. The team that tacked on a couple scores by running at a defensive back that was hurt to make them feel a little better , lmao!! Keep rattling , we hear yhea , the bears will keep playing and if they are lucky enuff will get to see that tarboro team one more time
Gdawg...Gdawg..Mt.Airy is doing well.very well...but why do you guys think you're the only team that has the capacity to improve? I'm not a Tarboro fan by any means..but they beat the heck out of you guys in the C-ship last year..scores do not always reflect how much a team has been dominated. The fact is that in no point and time during that game were you guys a threat to beat Tarboro..you guys held on and kept the score respectable. In the end however they wore you guys completely down. No shame in seeing and admitting that. At least it shouldn't be.

Tha print , jock rider to the end, lol, lol , all preseason was up the bears ying a lang and just as always in a minutes fate and a close score here or there goes back to tha same ole rider. Need to ride over to a Rhonda cards post and be proud of that 3-1 start the cards are off to. Pretty stout competition in those three outings. Could make a run to the ship. You beat a real power house in Eden Morehead..and not hatin on Starmount..but they've won how many...you beat a young Elkin squad..and a West Stokes squad who like Eden Morehead will be out in the first round of the playoffs..big ups on your great schedule. I state that Mt.Airy is a good team..but now I hope Tarboro beats the brakes off of yall..just like they did last year... Now thats hate..You seem to always take shots at Wilkes County or EW...when really there is only 1 relevant team in Surry as regards to football...all of the others flop just like they do in Wilkes when it comes to the playoffs...EW is EW..no need to keep throwing shade...i stand by what i said...Tarboro beat the heck out of you guys..and it wasnt that close..you guys got a moral victory in that game... You def deserve the credit for getting that far....and for the record...i respect JK..but let's not forget..he had talented teams..that he failed to coach up..once the playoffs started...Hopefully you guys wont fall to the same fate as EW did..and start off 9-0 and finish 9-3...stranger things have happened..Big Head Guys..

Lol..i used to sit with the Bears Fans when i would come to a playoff game after EW was done..Heck..now i will gladly sit with visitors and get my unabashed hate on...You guys heads have gotten so big that there isn't any room for anyone else anyway. I travel quite a bit to watch football..it def isn't to just Mt.Airy. Maybe you guys can take a Friday off and humble yourselves enough to come on up to good ole Wilkes...ooh i forgot..you're too good for that..Lol. Just remember this coach hasn't gotten you there yet...he's been known to get choked up along the way. I mean Starmount had the chance to beat you guys and at one time was down by 20 to Forbush..and eventually lost to them...so pipe down fellas..he hasn"t gotten yall to the promised land yet..lol. EW isn't championship material by any means..but you guys have a whole lot more to lose if you guys bow out early..I was high on you guys when the season started...a few fans can kill ya vibe. Plus there’s a little bit of pressure considering the bar coach holder and tradition has set. Again something he hasn’t been a part of in previous jobs. Don’t hate
Blue my head is not big about nothing Mt Airy is facing one of its toughest opponents this upcoming Friday in N Surry my niece's son plays on the line for them he's a big ole young man. We take it one game at a time here but I'm still pulling for Mt Airy where I came from and played we are not unbeatable I've not said that N Surry will give us there best shot just like they gave East Surry
