More on record watch! Holden Poindexter is 88 yds from tying setting Mount Airy's all-time passing record. (***Passed for over 3000 yards his sophomore year in 2018. He was injured and set out in 2019 and will most likely set some records this year.***) ***Added by me

I say he goes over this 88 yards Friday night. I was just checking and he has averaged over 150 in the 2 games played and if North Iredell had played the first game instead of deciding they didn't want their butts kicked and wouldn't play a game they scheduled then he probably woulda already broke the record.

remember Bill Wall ( the QB he is about to overtake)....great passer in an era when passing was not the preferred method of moving the ball...I know that for a fact because I passed for 969 yds my senior year at Reidsville (1967 season) and that was considered a lot....lol.....now it's about 3 or 4 games worth.......Kudos to Poindexter....................

Mount Airy won the 1968 Western 2A or was it the 3A state final ? I know Mount Airy was 3A in the 1970s.
Back then there was not a one-state champion, one Western & Eastern State Champion but that changed maybe in the early 1970s to a single State Champion with the eastern champion playing the western champion for a State Champion if my memory serves me right. Mount Airy and Reidsville played some hard-fought games for years and the wins were back and forth but overall I think Reidsville won a few more of the games. It was the biggest rivalry in the state.

I bet if the MA Bears Historian saw this, he could bring back a lot of good memories that he has collected over many years. We can talk about Holden for more weeks to come, 4 weeks, and hopefully more.

Last football season was the first time Reidsville/Mt. Airy played each other since 1970.............the 2 first met in 1927.......at times they were in the same conference....Overall record between the 2 even counting the last meeting in 2019....Reidsville has won 24 times....Mount Airy 15....and 3 Ties...............would like to see the 2 hook-up again but with new conferences who knows...................

In 1a 1960 was the last year of 1 state Championship.
1961-1965 1a had 4 state Championships.
1966 1a had 3 state Championships.
1967 1a had 2 state Championships.
1968 1a started back with one true State Championship.
Most folks think all classifications started back with 1 title in the 70s but 1a started back several years b4 the other classes.

Yeah 3A only had the 2 state championships (Western and Eastern)...from about 1961 until 1972 (I think)............Reidsville won a Western 3A co-title with Brevard in 1963 and won Western 3A titles in 1969 (over Mount Airy) and 1970 (over Pisgah)................

I can't remember all the players' names that played on that 1968 Mount Airy team besides Bill Wall. I think one was Rudy Hemrick I think, and I use to know them all but that is the only 2 that come to mind.

Yes, Buster is on my Facebook page and I went to his dad's grocery store all the time. I remember Jack Childress Eric Strickland. Thank you !
Do you remember a guy that played basketball, nicknamed Chile Childress that went on to play basketball for UNC . He was a few years older maybe. I used to run around with his younger brother. I had known Doug Childress since we went to South Main elementary school, the old Mount Airy High school. It has been torn down and a new Granite City Hall building has been there many years now.

I been trying to find something on Chili Childress but come to a dead end. My friend Doug Childress use to talk about how good his brother was at basketball and he always called him Chili. It could have been Jack Childress who played basketball & football and I probably got the college wrong because Jack Childress went on to play for Duke, not UNC. It has been too many years for my old brain. My bad !

Bear Historian, I have a question. Where does Aaron Wheeler (05-08) rank on the passing yards, touchdowns, completion lists? He played in a ton more games than Holden or Hinson ever played in, having started 3 seasons at QB which included a 16-0 season, 3rd round appearance, and regional final appearance. (And to be fair, Holden plays in a far more air attack system when compared to Wheeler playing in a more run dominated team and was a good runner with great success, but nonetheless did air it out quite a bit). Just curious

Coach used to put Rudy in the backfield on short yardage situations. He was a freight train
I was friends with his brother Jeff who married Calvin Seivers daughter of Sievers Photography and when Calvin retired Jeff was working for him and took over the Studio. They lived close to Mount Airy High, one street past where I lived.

Congrats to Holden Pointdexter. Great accomplishment. I also have zero to do with Mount Airy but have been there to games (football, basketball, legion), etc. many times and love reading the history of your community. Nothing beats these communities like Mount Airy and their sporting histories imo.

I posted this in January of 2020 ... not during football season so it might not have been seen by many..

Anyway, I was keeping stats for Reidsville back in 1969 and I still had my play-by-play charts from the Reidsville-Mount Airy championship game. A tech-savvy Ram booster club parent got the old reel-to-reel tapes of the 1969 game and converted them to VHS as a fund-raising project. I got together with a local radio guy (Ram BBQ) and using my script we made a production of the video. It stayed on the shelf as a VHS tape for about 15 years before I got it digitized and posted to YouTube. That's RamBBQ on the voice-over.

Take a trip back to 1969 and take a look at Bill Wall, Buster Cox, Phil Kirkman and Co. going up against my Ram teammates (I was on injured reserve that season and coach Morris asked me to keep stats).

Divided divisions ... somehow the NCHSAA doesn't want to officially count the titles that the teams won during those East/West years but they count them now when they divide the classes by ADMs (1A and 1AA, etc). Anytime a team wins the final game the association allows they are state champs, IMO.

Reidsville's two schools consolidated in 1969 - neither school had much of a football team but together they were state champs.

Integration took place at Mount Airy in the late 1960s but it may have been early 1970 before both sports were combined. I may be wrong but I can not remember combined sports in the 1968 Western State Championship except maybe Eric Strickland. My long-term memory is not what it used to be. I am falling apart. I was never racist because I lived in the city only a block from a black neighborhood and I never knew what it was to be racist and don't to this day. Color is only skin deep and then we are all human. But after the 1960s we had some great black football players and still do to this day. I lost a really good friend from the late 1960 and early 1970s to lung cancer last night. I am so glad i stopped smoking in the late 1960s or early 1970s. I only smoked maybe 2 to 3 years. If you smoke please quit because it has taken many lives. I never did drugs or smoked weed or pot, whatever they call it now...... That's how I respected my Mom and Dad's wishes. Still need prayers because I have had it rough since Thursday. Can't say what is causing it except maybe staying home for the last year except working 14 to 16 hours a week work.
